Sunday Chivas USA-Galaxy Playoff Gameday

100 Percent Soccer 01 November @ 11:15 AM EST

This is the game Southern California MLS fans have long awaited.

I'd like to say there's a buzz in the air, a sense of anticipation and tension and plenty of concrete expressions of the rivalry that have temporarily divided friends and families.

I'd like to say that, but it wouldn't be true.

Ex-Roma coach Spalletti to coach criminals

The Beautiful Game (2) 24 September @ 11:38 AM EST
I'm biting my tongue from saying lots of people involved in Italian soccer are criminals.
But Luciano Spalletti is going to manage actual convicts in a unique game coming up Saturday.
According to La Repubblica, the Italian will take part in a specially organised match that will see members of parliament take on convicted criminals on a prison football pitch in Massa.

Serie A Talk 11 September @ 04:00 AM EST

The Serie A Game to Watch this week features the only matchup of two teams in the top four in the standings. Although it is only the third week of the season (sorry Sampdoria fans), both Lazio and Juventus are eyeing a possible scudetto and this match could keep one club's early momentum going.

Andrea Russotto - What happened to you?

The Offside: Italy 31 August @ 08:03 PM EST

Most Italian soccer fans should be familiar with the name of Andrea Russotto. As a youngster he was dubbed as "the next Roberto Baggio" and "Antonio Cassano with a level head" but up until now he has not even been close to living up to those names. His story is a bit particular, and for those of you that don't know it here it is.

Italy fans to get ID badges

The Beautiful Game (2) 17 August @ 10:25 AM EST
Fans wishing to support their team at away matches will need ID badges next season in Italy.
This goes into effect on January 1, 2010 according to Interior Minister Roberto Maroni. For -- what else? -- anti-hooliganism measures:
The government believes the initiative will make it easier to police matches and track down trouble makers, as part of their bid to combat hooliganism in Italian soccer.

Ricardo Clark to Livorno UPDATE

Project 2010 28 July @ 01:41 PM EST

Corriere di Livorno is quoting the club president as saying that the deal for Ricardo Clark is done. He claims that Clark will be staying with Houston because of their league position and their inability to cope with the loss of their star player, so he will be joining Livorno in January, during the winter transfer window.

USMNT/Italy rivalry continues

The Beautiful Game (2) 15 June @ 06:28 AM EST
I'd say it's becoming a bit of a rivalry. Maybe not a competitive one, but an emotional one, that will continue later today.
You have 1) De Rossi's elbow on McBride in '06, 2) Giuseppe Rossi's defection, 3) my disdain for Italian soccer.
Anyways, the USMNT finally recorded a tally by securing Italy's current training site for the 2010 World Cup. Click to continue reading...

Pirlo to Chelsea?

The Beautiful Game (2) 11 June @ 03:32 PM EST
With AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti now in charge of Chelsea, word is he could bring veteran midfielder Andrea Pirlo with him to Stamford Bridge.
Pretty sure the universe might explode if an Italian international joined the Premiership.
I checked the national team page on Wikipedia and the only EPL rep was Andrea Dossena of Liverpool (an on-and-off starter). Click to continue reading...

Marcello Lippi hates foreigners

The Beautiful Game (2) 10 June @ 07:40 AM EST
Reason #54,089 to hate Italian soccer.
Most Serie A fans would lament losing a top-flight superstar like Kaka to another league. Not Italian national team coach Marcello Lippi.

Finally! Kaka officially to Real Madrid

The Beautiful Game (2) 09 June @ 05:03 AM EST
Thank god this one's over -- and it finished with no surprises.
I'm actually glad to see the move. It gives Spanish side some serious potential (especially if another move or two is made) and also Italian soccer is kinda lame these days.
We can thank Mr. Beckham in part:
"I spoke to some friends, like Beckham, who has already played for Real.

Pro Vercelli: The Ghosts of 1910

The Run of Play - Soccer in Style 23 April @ 09:40 AM EST

If you go to Pro Vercelli's "records" page in Football Manager 2009, you'll see that the worst defeat in the club's history came in a match against Inter on April 24, 1910, which Pro Vercelli lost 10-3. 10-3 is a catastrophic defeat by any standard, but the numbers alone can't convey the magnitude of what happened that day.

Monday Azzurri News Bits

Euro 2008 on World Cup Blog 08 September @ 05:39 PM EST

Don't you just love Italian soccer? It's so... interesting. Take a look at this news story, for example: Roberto Mancini, ex-coach of Inter, won the Trofeo Maestrelli award for being the "Best Coach of 2008." I don't know if this could get any more ironic.

Here's a whole bunch of stuff going on in the Italian soccer world (and some stuff that's going on in the non-Italian soccer world, but more on that in a bit).

-Lippi decided to talk a bit about his recent call ups. Apparently I wasn't the only one who was kinda irked that most of the "old guard" (and I mean that literally) was called up.
