2012 will see the inaugural Premier League Soccer competition take place in India. It follows in
the footsteps of the hugely successful Indian Premier League cricket competition which began in
2008 and has now run for four seasons.
The new tournament in India had its auction today. A quick refresher for those who allow quirky
short-term tournament formats to slip from the back of their minds (shame): five teams, each team
bids for a leading "icon", along with two foreigners and a manager, with a wage budget of $2.5m.
(How much is being ballparked for the icons 30-40%?

East Bengal 4-1 Pailan Arrows .

By Tony Edwards - San Jose, CA (Jan 17, 2012) US Soccer Players -- In Tuesday's edition of the Five
Questions, US National Team coach Jurgen Klinsmann talks competition and Tony presents a case study
in using Major League Soccer's model in another part of the world. Also, Wilmer Cabrera's exit as
U-17 coach and Open Cup changes.
Worse than Kompany This crazy goal comes from India and the match between East Bengal and Pailan
Arrows. Pailan defender Lalrozama Fanai, for some reason best known to himself, dealt with a
through-ball by launching into a two-footed lunge on his goalkeeper Ravi Kumar. The ball bobbled
through to East Bengal striker Tolgay Ozbey for [.

The practice of veteran stars seeing out their careers in lesser leagues isn't exactly new, nor
is it rare. The Middle East has been using oil-soaked checks to lure eager foreigners for years.
And yet, this weekend might just take the cake for odd locations and trail-blazing new football
landscapes.
Muang Thong United player coach Robbie Fowler is being linked with a move to India. This story is
very low on detail but big on headlines and also gives me a chance to use one of the pictures I
took when I saw Fowler in action recently.
Despite a poor end to the season the club had said they would keep Fowler on but that still remains
to be seen.
Last year the Indian Football Association announced it would be launching Premier League Soccer
in early 2012, with six franchises. The franchises are located in Kolkata, Howrah, Asansol,
Midnapore, and Siliguri. When the league was announced, IFA also stated that each team would have
one icon player and a maximum of three overseas players and one overseas player from Asia.

Uh oh, Franck Ribery doesn't look too impressed up there! Let's all pretend
that it's a major case of jet lag and Franck's failure to pick up the
David Luiz Book Of Hospitality. To be fair, it must be dreadful stuck in a
training camp where you're forced to sing Birthday songs to the President, train in the sweltering
heat and not get to fist pump on the streets or wherever you'd like!

Remember kids. Smoking is bad. It rots your lungs, prematurely ages your skin and due to
recently implemented non-smoking legislation, can cause hair frizzing as you stand outside in the
rain.
Now, John Terry might have made our hair curl in the past with his nefarious lady-bothering
activities, and even caused the odd bout of breathlessness when his shorts get clingy, but so far
he hasn't aged us.
John Terry may sue Indian government, should probably focus on more important things...
As if sleeping around and shouting racist slurs weren't bad enough for John Terry's
reputation, it appears the Indian government has been using a blurred image of Terry for
anti-smoking warnings on cigarettes.
Much is made of the global appeal of football, with FIFA justifiably proud that there are more
members of its organisation than there are of the UN: over 200 countries enter the World Cup
competition.
What's perhaps not quite as well known is that many of these nations who enter quickly exit the
competition and it's not surprising that many of these countries are Caribbean islands or
micro-states.

Quite a funny news story circulating today, with John Terry being used to front a "quit smoking"
campaign in India. Whats funnier is that JT has no knowledge whatsoever of being used in this
campaign, so the company that owns his image rights are understandably trying to resolve the
problem.
John Terry's blurred image features on the front of the pack of cigarettes, urging people to stop
smoking.

"Copa Presidente", una especie de Copa Argentina en Dubai

The South Asian Football Championship has been taking place in India since the beginning of
December. The biannual event retained its recent trend of seeing the Indian national team win the
championship this time defeating Afghanistan in yesterday's final by four goals to nil.
In the early stages of the tournament Afghanistan had the early advantage over India with both
teams meeting each other in Group A, along with Sri Lanka and Bhutan, and the Afghans finishing top
of the group on goal difference.

Bet it will be easier for a young English born Indian/Pakistani footballer to get into the India or

letrero.
