The 1972 Intercontinental Cup saw the winners of the 1971/72 European Cup, Ajax, pitted against the winners of the 1972 Copa Libertadores, Independiente, over two legs to ascertain (in a roundabout way) which club side was the best in the world at that particular juncture.

Coming into the first leg in Buenos Aires, the famous Ajax side of Johan Cruyff, Johnny Rep and Johan Neeskens had just won the Eredivisie, the Dutch Cup, and theirsecond European Cup the season previous.
