We bring our work week of end of season polling to a close with what sure is to be a testy
subject. Who sucked hardest?
This club had its share of underperformers this season, especially during that forgettable
mid-season lull that drove us all insane. We've somehow managed to narrow our initial list to four:
a pair of midfielders, a forward and one truly atrocious fullback.
It was Liverpool's best season since the start of the Premier League. A season which saw Liverpool
scored the most goals and lost the least games but yet could not win the Premiership title.
But the Reds under Rafa Benitez gave us some wonderful moments with last minute winners and high
scoring games.
Valentine's Day 2011 saw an announcement anticipated but met with sorrow around the football
world and mourned with open grief in his native Brazil. Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima stated at a
hastily arranged press conference in Sao Paolo that he was retiring from the sport. The 34-year-old
was clearly distraught and broke down several times as he explained the reason he can no play
longer the game so dear to him.
Walter Smith is the phlegmatic type. Over a managerial career now into its third decade with
Rangers, Everton and Scotland he has accepted his varied triumphs and disasters in a manner that
would earn Kipling's approval.
But there is one impostor that bothers him still, some 18 years after the events of one
roller-coaster season.
