Cross Border Thoughts: Mexico and Canada

Major League Soccer Talk 01 November @ 07:33 AM EST

Franco should be a hero in Mexico/PA Sports Image

I understand this is a website dedicated to MLS and US Soccer, but please indulge me in this moment of personal privilege about our neighbors to the south and our neighbors to the north.

Guille Franco opened his Premier League account yesterday, playing for a less competitive West Ham side than former Mexican striker Jared Borgetti did in Bolton a few years back.

Hex Redux

Center Holds It 19 October @ 05:08 PM EST
Blanco to the rescue again
Now that the Hex has drawn to a close, we know the three teams that are moving on to South Africa, and which one still has some work to do. CONCACAF always gets a bad rap, from within and without, in regard to its level of play. Regardless, this has been the most competitive hex since its inception in 1998: 5 teams were still alive with 2 matches to go. Click to continue reading...

Why is Defense So Reviled in Football?

La Liga Talk 08 October @ 12:07 PM EST

This is the kind of space Xavi thinks he deserves.

The theory is that because of the low amount of scoring in football, using particularly protective and cynical tactics ruins the sport whose nature inhibits a high amount of goals per match. Football's common nickname is "The Beautiful Game," but from where did that phrase initially originate?

Pedro keeps FC Barcelona perfect in 1-0 defeat of Almeria

Barcaloco 03 October @ 04:54 PM EST

Almeria came to the Camp Nou trying to put the first blemish on FC Barcelona's perfect La Liga record. From the starting whistle it became very obvious what manager Hugo Sanchez had in mind to control Barcelona's powerful offense. Sanchez employed Chico to stick on Xavi Hernandez and not let the Barcelona midfielder control the ball and coordinate the offense.

Are La Liga Goal Scoring Records Ready to Fall?

La Liga Report 29 September @ 04:41 AM EST

Four of the best strikers in the world are playing in La Liga and all of them are off to a great start to the season, averaging at least a goal a game this season.

David Villa tops all scorers with six goals in five games while Messi, Ibrahimovic and Cristiano Ronaldo have all scored five goals.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Record breaker

Dirty Tackle 23 September @ 03:36 AM EST

In today's match against Villarreal, Cristiano Ronaldo will be aiming to become the only Real Madrid player to score a goal in each of his first four La Liga matches. Already with the transfer fee world record in hand, this is far from the only other record Cristiano will be attempting to break at Real this season.

Algunos antecedentes de Tigres Vs. América

Solo Tigres 02 September @ 11:23 AM EST

Mexico 2: USA 1: Americans Fail to Shake Azteca Curse

Major League Soccer Talk 12 August @ 04:57 PM EST

Javier Aguirre took a chance on Miguel Sabah. Former Coaches Sven Goran Eriksson, Ricardo LaVolpe and Hugo Sanchez all hardly rated him lightly- it paid off big time today with a game winning goal.

Charlie Davies early goal gave the US an un-expected lead, but after that the American shape collapsed and defending was at times shambolic.

MEX vs USA: Sleeping on Mexico a Bad Idea

Major League Soccer Talk 12 August @ 08:33 AM EST

Mexico is hurting. The poor management reigns of Sven Goran Eriksson all but threw out the successful Copa America run in 2007 under Hugo Sanchez and brought Mexico to its lowest point since the struggles of the 2001 hexagonal.

But Mexico is never to be underestimated. Man for man, when healthy and calling up a full squad, El Tri still has more accomplished and quality players than anyone else in CONCACAF.

Gold Cup final: The stakes are immense for a Mexico win

Soccerblog 26 July @ 08:40 AM EST

Here it is. The match every one wanted. Another chapter in the historiography of the fiercest rivalry in the Concacaf region.

It has sharpened so much because of the US domination of Mexico in recent years. So there are stakes a plenty for both teams. But at this stage, a Gold Cup win means much more to El Tri than it means to the US.

Ronaldo wants to emulate Real legend Di Stefano' s record

Di Stefano uses his trophies to carry water to his drought stricken village

The player most associated with Real's glittering success turned 83 years old yesterday but he has competition from the most expensive signing in football history.

Ronaldo, who was signed from Manchester United for 80 million pounds (C$152 million), was quoted as telling sports daily Marca on Sunday:

"Some day I would like to have a winning record similar to Alfredo di Stefano.

Carlisle's Gold Cup Preview: Lacks the intrigue of the 2007 edition

Sanford's Soccer Net 02 July @ 08:14 AM EST
Two years ago, the Gold Cup was rife with intrigue. It was the first time U.S. coach Bob Bradley had managed the team in a tournament setting. Ditto for Mexico manager Hugo Sanchez, who was fired less than a year later. There were plenty of compelling matches along the way, with Guadeloupe stunning all and sundry with its run to the semifinals. Click to continue reading...
