"We are both professional footballers and I know that the game is physical, I too have made hard
and sometimes mis-timed challenges but never with the intention of hurting an opponent. He set out
to hurt me today.
"I do feel lucky that I have not suffered a greater injury. The contact was only centimetres from
my eye.

Controversial DJ bows out after Hillsborough comments Radio host Steven Cohen has announced that
his show World Soccer Daily will come off the air after internet hate mail directed at his
stepchildren. As you read on OTP, Cohen courted controversy in recent months with comments he made
about the Hillsborough disaster.

Following the collapse of a stadium that was 1,500 over capacity for Ivory Coast's World Cup
qualifier against Malawi in March, the head of the Ivory Coast Football Federation and another man,
who was responsible for ticketing at the match, have both been jailed.20 people died and over 130
were injured following a stampede caused by overcrowding and poor safety measures.

To be 100% honest.. I've been avoiding blogging about this whole Steven Cohen business. Mostly
because it's all so very unpleasant. Hopefully you've read about it on other blogs, where it's been
covered pretty well. But if not, here's a quick summary with plenty of links that go into more
detail. OK then, from the top: Cohen [.

Reds see red over Hillsborough comments Last month OTP told you about the myths and lies about
Hillsborough being pedalled by World Soccer Daily radio host Steven Cohen. The UK-born DJ recently
apologised for his comments (which can be read here), which makes the Liverpool club statement
released yesterday about as prompt as Rio Ferdinand turning up [.

Steven Cohen, host of America's most popular soccer radio show World Soccer Daily, is learning a
lesson Kelvin McKenzie could have taught him: don't play fast and loose with the facts when you're
dealing with the Hillsborough disaster.
Steven Cohen
Cohen has, for quite some time, been beating the drum that ticketless Liverpool fans "shared
responsibility" for causing the Hillsborough disaster, despite Lord Taylor's official report
concluding otherwise.

I'm sure that most of you have followed the story on how Steve Cohen decided to express his version
of the truth on the Hillsborough disaster and how he seems affronted at the reaction that has
followed. Indeed, this heroic fighter for the freedom of speech has gone public with his disgust at
those who have dared mail his show and its backers with their complaints, calling them "Taliban"
and "terrorists".

Setting up football teams is tough. If one has knowledge of the amateur game and a pool of
former teammates and friends happy to come along for the ride then it helps. I don't. I haven't
played Sunday league football in a few years and never in London. As for my friends, they tend to
either enjoy playing World of Warcraft or with their hair or other areas of their anatomy.

DJ uses myths and lies to blame Liverpool fans for Hillsborough I gave serious thought as to
whether giving the misguided views of Steven Cohen (pictured above, left) more publicity was
something I wanted to, but our friends at EPL Talk asked very nicely and I am hopeful you will see
his comments for what they [.

FOOTBALLSUP 20 April @ 04:58 AM EST
Stop it now. It's boring. Of course it's really sad, tragic, etc etc - but that's quite enough.
It was 20 years ago, stop wallowing in your own self pity.
Although, it was nice to see the Everton fans drape flags of support during their game against
United - unfortunately the scabby Mancs drowned out their songs of support.

Liverpool player Charles Itandje yesterday apologised for laughing and dancing during the
Hillsborough memorial service. He said sorry after he was suspended for two weeks over the antics,
which have outraged Liverpool fans, and told to keep away from the club. The reserve team
goalkeeper said he apologised "a thousand times" and offered to meet the families [.

I had some other topics to write about today, like Oscar De La Hoya's retirement or the Dynamo's
Soccer Night Out promotion. But then I remembered what today is. If you are reading this you are in
no doubt a soccer fan. And if you're a soccer fan then you should know today marks 20 years since
the tragedy in Hillsborough.

Why Liverpool? I am often asked this question about the team I chose to support. As a fan of the
English game but with no logical ties to any city or team in Britain, I was drawn to LFC for two
reasons. One is the tremendous respect the club has for history and traditions. The second is the
amazing connection the players and organization have with the supporters.

Frequent readers of this blog will know that I am not particularly fond of our red cousins. However
rivalry is rivalry but blood is thicker than water. When it comes to things like Hillsborough and
The Sun boycott then Stanley Park is barely as wide as a blade of grass. I took my scarf down to
Anfield on Sunday and tied it to their gates, it was quite a strange goosepimple moment but I'm
very glad I did.

Yet another big, BIG game at the Grove tonight. Massive. Huge. Enormous. You get the drift.
The Dutch master coach, Rinus Michels inventor of "total football" with Ajax, Barcelona,
Cologne, the Los Angeles Aztecs of the old NASL and de oranje of the Netherlands in 1974
and 1988, always said football is a simple game.

to concede three to Bolton) Chelsea.

To Anfield, where football was not the most important thing on the agenda for once. Paying
respect to those who sadly lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster, 20 years ago this
Wednesday, was at the forefront of everyone's mind. A minute‘s silence, impeccably observed. What
followed was fitting; a comprehensive feast of flowing football saw Liverpool
sweep Blackburn aside with ease.

There seems to be a real upsurge of national interest in the Hillsbrough disaster with a number of
documentaries focusing on this tragedy, not least the one on the History channel that is to be
screened on the day of the anniversary.

on BBC Radio 4 at 11:15am with a repeat on the 17th of April at 9am.
