The Pioneer Press named their boys and girls Soccer Player of the Year on Wednesday.

David Rosenthal from the Boys 2A State Championship team Apple Valley takes the award home this year. According to the Pioneer Press, the senior forward had a breakout season with a school-record 33 goals and 22 assists in leading the Eagles to a 24-0-0 record and the school's unprecedented eighth state championship.

Coach Chuck Scanlon says his 24-0-0 nationally ranked team is the first to ever win a Minnesota State High School Championship without a loss or a tie.

The final for the girls' 2A State High School Championship matched the #1 team in the nation, the Woodbury Royals, against the 3rd seed in the tournament the Wayzata Trojans. To most Wayzata was an underdog team. "If you're going to look at stats and where they were ranked and where we were ranked they were favored for a reason, they're a very solid" said Wayzata coach Tony Peszneker, but added, "There wasn't a great deal of difference between the two teams.

Sophie Babo lit up the Metrodome in the Class A Girls' Championship game. The Orono forward, who is only in seventh grade showed that she would be a player to watch for the next few years by scoring three of the Spartan's 5 goals. The first boys 2A game of the night saw the Apple Valley Eagles (22-0-0) face off against the Northfield Raiders (14-4-3) and it only took 19 seconds for Apple Valley to exert its dominance by scoring a goal on their first trip down the field. Tom Obarski connected to put the Eagles up 1-0.

Northfields luck only got worse as they were called for a rather innocuous looking foul in the box just 5 minutes later.
