12 boys soccer players from Minnesota and neighboring areas of Wisconsin signed letters of intent today to play for Division I schools while 2 other signed to play for Division II schools.

14 players is a big jump from 2009 which only saw 6 players sign while 2 of those 6 ended up playing elsewhere.

Two long standing boys high school soccer coaches earned some well deserved awards this past week.

Apple Valley's Chuck Scanlon who has been coaching boys soccer for 34 years won the Division I High School Boys Coach of the Year Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

The Pioneer Press named their boys and girls Soccer Player of the Year on Wednesday.

David Rosenthal from the Boys 2A State Championship team Apple Valley takes the award home this year. According to the Pioneer Press, the senior forward had a breakout season with a school-record 33 goals and 22 assists in leading the Eagles to a 24-0-0 record and the school's unprecedented eighth state championship.

To most Wayzata was an underdog team. "If you're going to look at stats and where they were ranked and where we were ranked they were favored for a reason, they're a very solid" said Wayzata coach Tony Peszneker, but added, "There wasn't a great deal of difference between the two teams.

The first boys 2A game of the night saw the Apple Valley Eagles (22-0-0) face off against the Northfield Raiders (14-4-3) and it only took 19 seconds for Apple Valley to exert its dominance by scoring a goal on their first trip down the field. Tom Obarski connected to put the Eagles up 1-0.

Northfields luck only got worse as they were called for a rather innocuous looking foul in the box just 5 minutes later.

You wouldn't have know that it was an 8:00 am game on a Monday no less with the level of play from both the La Crescent Lancers and Orono Spartans. Each team played hard from the get-go with plenty of action in the first semifinal of the day of the Minnesota State High School Soccer Semifinals held at the Metrodome.

If you ask Joan Seivold, she will tell you she never meant to break records and push limits. But that doesn't mean she's not competitive. She certainly is, and along with her experience and care for her players, she nearly got an unexpected Blake School back to the Minnesota State High School Tournament for a 3rd year in a row.
