After winning six straight matches to take the top spot in the WPS table, the Independence
traveled to New Jersey on Saturday night and played one of their worst games of the season. After a
listless first half, Casey Nogueira netted a second half brace to give Sky Blue the 2–0
victory.
The Philadelphia Independence traveled to Piscataway, New Jersey, to face defending WPS
champions Sky Blue FC on Sunday, a team that they had beaten in their three previous encounters. A
win for the Independence would have solidified their hold on second place behind league leading FC
Gold Pride, critical for the expansion team's post-season plans because the second place team gets
an automatic play-off berth as host in the semi-finals.
Congrats to Sky Blue FC for winning the first WPS Championship! Heather O'Reilly win's the MVP
but she said it should have gone to Christie Rampone! Heather was first class for saying that
because Christie is a big part of Sky Blue FC because not only is she the captain but she is also
the head coach!

It's not everyday that a club can pick up a player with three Olympic gold medals in her trophy case. But that's precisely what the Boston Breakers did when they selected Heather O'Reilly in last week's National Women's Soccer League allocation draft.
Hackworth says loss is his responsibility. Team believes they are still in the play-off hunt.
What's next for women's soccer in the US? US roster announced for Mexico friendly. More news.
Exclusive Op-Ed: America's Band of Sisters By Joe Donnelly, TakePart.com
By MattGerlachPhotography I'm not sure how I'm going to talk about USA women's
soccer without sounding like some babbling teenage, fanboy kook. I'm not. I'm well into middle age
and generally sober, often skeptical and sometimes cynical.
Since the first women's soccer tournament at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, the USWNT has won three
gold medals and one silver. A look back at how they got it done.

A hat-trick from Alex Morgan propelled the USWNT to a 4–0 win over Sweden to claim third place
at the 2012 Algarve Cup on Wednesday.
But the thoughts of many US Soccer fans—and the team—surely lingered on the 1–0 loss to
Japan on Monday in the first meeting of the two countries since the US lost to Japan in the 2011
Women's World Cup final.
Sebastien Le Toux talks to MLS Reserves about leaving the Union,
Nobody was talking to me or telling me what was going on until February 1st. I found out quickly
that Philadelphia did not want to sign me and a trade was going to happen.
Mexico's World Cup qualifying victory clearly shook the US Women's National Team to their core.
On Tuesday night, the US settled the score, reminding Mexico, and the world, that there is still an
enormous gap in class between the two sides. Were at not for some shoddy finishing and a whole lot
of five-alarm defending, the score line could easily have been doubled as the US controlled the
match from the opening whistle and were rarely troubled throughout the 90 minutes.
The US Women's National Team knocked off Mexico 4-0 in their final match of the group stage of
Olympic qualifying to win Group B. Carli Lloyd had a hat trick and Heather O'Reilly added a goal as
the USWNT rolled to an easy victory. They will face Costa Rica for a chance to qualify on Friday
(8pm, concacaf.
Y0u can watch a live stream of today's Expansion Draft the French Canadian way from 3pm on the
Montreal Impact website. (It's supposed to be on the MLS site too but, as of this writing, they
haven't put the link up yet.)
Montreal Impact head coach Jesse Marsch is among those who noticed Freddy Adu was left
unprotected by the Philadelphia Union ahead of today's Expansion Draft.
By Dr. Raf Crowley Yesterday, Neil W. Blackmon took our readers back through the emotional gauntlet
that all true US Soccer fans experienced during the latest heart-stopping track meet, thriller of a

Ahead of Saturday's game in Vancouver, Kevin Kinkead presents another excellent scouting
report.
In the Goal.com head-to-head preview, the Philly guy sees the Union winning 2-1, the Vancouver
sees the Whitecaps winning 2-1. The sport betting website SBRforum.com predicts a 2–1 win for the
Union.
Up until this do-or-die contest for third place in the CONCACAF qualifiers for the 2011 Women's
World Cup in Cancun, Lori Lindsey of the Philadelphia Independence had played a total of 53 minutes
in the tournament, coming in as a substitute in the final match of group play on November 1 against
Costa Rica.
After handing Haiti a 5–0 drubbing in the first match of group play in the CONCACAF qualifiers
for the 2011 Women's World Cup, on Saturday the US faced Guatemala, who had lost their first match
1–0 to Costa Rica. Ninety minutes later, the score was 9–0 in favor of the US with three
players scoring two or more goals, including a hat trick for Philadelphia Independence forward Amy
Rodriguez.

WPS Player of the Month Rodriguez has been on fire for the Independence and she scored her
eighth international goal one minute before halftime to put the US up 1–0.
The US Women's team emphatically demonstrated they deserve their number one ranking on Saturday
in a commanding 4-0 victory over number two ranked Germany. Two Philadelphia Independence players
contributed assists along the way.
The first fifteen minutes of play showed what a danger the German team can be.
Hmmm - the usual internet issues this morning - and an e-mail from FairPoint indicating that my
webspace is now available. Hey FairPoint - it ain't my webspace that's the problem.
Could you maybe help me with the little e-mail issue that I've now contacted you about TWICE?
(Never mind the time spent waiting on [.
In women's soccer news, there's the fact that the USWNT posted its final win of 2008 last night,
downing China 1-0 in Detroit on the strength of a Heather O'Reilly goal. Pia's team finishes out
the year with a record-setting record: 33-1-2. And maybe the even better news is that
there were more than 11,000 [.
If you haven't already, read PSP's match report on the Union's emphatic win over Sporting Kansas
City. It includes video of John Hackworth's postgame press conference and locker room interviews.

Kerith Gabriel writes that while Peter Nowak says a report in the Edinburgh Evening News that
says he has applied for the manager's job at SPL club Hearts is "absolutely false," the author of
the original report, Barry Anderson tells him, "I'm not sure of his chances.
It is always sad when a World Cup ends. No more matches at all hours of the day, no more
constant media coverage, no more excitement with new heros daily emerging from obscurity. This
year's 2011 Women's World Cup was as entertaining an affair as we have seen from this (or any other
tournament) in quite some time.

Wrapping up a four-game homestand in front of 4,027, an impassioned young Spirit squad showed no signs of intimidation against a team with a two-game winning streak and the winners of the previous two week's NWSL Player of the Week in Sydney LeRoux and Heather O'Reilly. Washington again shut down their opponent's the top producers, holding both scoreless.
Every great journey has a first step. This was one of them...in the Beep Test.
The U.S. WNT hit the field -- both plastic and grass -- today for the first time in 2013 and clearly the ladies are glad to be back together and embarking on another journey.
Like all the others in the past, this one will take twists and turns and no one knows how it will end, but everyone knows it will be worth the ride.
Heather O'Reilly is competing against some of the best footballers of today for
the FIFA's Puskas Award, which recognises the 'Best Goal of the Year'. Of course, everybody has
their own interpretation of what constitutes a "great goal". Neymar, Lionel Messi, Rooney,
Giovani dos Santos and Ibrahimovic have all scored some of the most
beautiful ones this year, but so has Heather!
Still enjoying a short summer vacation here at The Zygo Soccer Report, but here's some videos of
goals (and some bonus material) to keep you entertained.
To be fair, I'm merely battling a hangover as a result of last night's karaoke extravaganza
which you would already know about if you follow me on twitter. (warning: I rarely tweet about
football). The USWNT made a somewhat ironic move this week as the formerly ill Megan Rapinoe
replaced the now ill Tobin Heath on the Algarve Cup roster.
