German Bundesliga Recap 11 February 2012 - The 90th Minute Soccer Blog
Below are brief recaps for all the Bundesliga matches played on February 11, 2012.
Bayer Munich 2-0 Kaiserslautern
Bayern keeps pace with Dortmund with a clean sheet. Both goals came in the first half as Bayern
held Kaiserslautern to one shot on goal.
Alfredo Morales will earn his first Bundesliga start against Steve Cherundolo and Hannover while
Preston Zimmerman's midweek hat-trick could push him into Darmstadt's lineup against Wehen.
Steve Cherundolo and Hannover ended their long winless run with a narrow win over Nurnberg while
Fabian Johnson's first league goal for Hoffenheim was little consolation in their loss at Dortmund.
Reports this morning suggested that Mame Biram Diouf has agreed a loan move to Hannover,
however, more recently, claims have been made that he has signed a two and a half.
German site, Kicker, claims he passed his medical this morning and is ready for a permanent move
for around £1.5m. Hannover are currently 7th in the league, 10 points behind Bayern Munich, having
scored just 21 goals in 19 games.
Steve Cherundolo and Hannover will try to trip up Nurnberg for their first league win since October
while the trio of Americans at Hoffenheim will try to trip up Dortmund's title ambitions.
Alfredo Morales could be handed his first top-flight start by Hertha coach Michael Skibbe on their
trip to Nurnberg while a total of four Americans could be in uniform when Hannover visits
Hoffenheim.
Hoffenheim's pair of Americans will try to guide the team out of their five-game slide in Nurnberg
while Steve Cherundolo and Hannover will try to turn their streak around against Leverkusen.
It was a tough weekend for active Americans in Germany as only Steve Cherundolo and Hannover picked
up any points in the top two German flights.
Steve Cherundolo and Hannover booked their place in the Europa League knockout round despite a loss
at Liege while Sacha Kljestan and Anderlecht stayed perfect in group play.

His technique is exquisite. His movement is terrific. His vision is breathtaking. His quality is
unquestionable.
He is 22 years of age. He is one of the Bundesliga's hottest properties. His name is Marco Reus,
and he is the latest star to emerge from German football.
After a blistering start to the season, Reus has been thrust into the spotlight, and many top
clubs around Europe have taken notice of his fine performances.

They didn't even play one combined game 73 minutes total and yet the Boateng brothers, Jerome
and Kevin (half-brothers, really), took the headlines in two of the most discussed games of the
weekend for very different reasons.
Milan was down 3-0 at the half when Kevin was brought on in a lofty attempt to perform
miracles.
Jermaine Jones will look to continue his resurgence with Schalke as they visit Leverkusen while
Steve Cherundolo and Hannover face a tough home test against Bundesliga leaders FC Bayern.
U.S. national team players were heavily involved with action in Europa League on Thursday, and not
a single one left with a loss. Goals were scored, assists made, and a long-awaited return to action
finally took place.
Jozy Altidore continued to light the lamp, scoring his side's lone goal as AZ drew 1-1 at FC
Metalist Kharkiv.
Steve Cherundolo and Hannover will need to be at their best if they hope to take anything from
Werder Bremen while Edson Buddle and Ingolstadt may be in luck against a dismal Bochum.

- Dortmund woke up in a harsh post-Championship reality.
Several of the U.S. National Team players were in action for their clubs as the group phase of the
Europa League kicked off Thursday. Here's a recap:
Jozy Altidore continued his blistering scoring pace for AZ Alkmaar, netting his
sixth goal in eight matches in all competitions when he fired home the opening goal in the 4-1 win
against Malmo.
Jozy Altidore's wonder-goal helped AZ Alkmaar power to a win over Malmo FF while Steve Cherundolo
and Hannover were held to a scoreless deadlock by Standard Liege as Europa League group play kicked
off.
Daniel Williams could line up with Fabian Johnson when Hoffenheim visits Mainz, while Steve
Cherundolo and fourth-place Hannover will try to keep running with the big boys on their trip to
Stuttgart.
Bayern stopped reinventing and are themselves again. A premature autobiography
by the captain keeps everybody busy off the pitch. Games are routinely won on the pitch. The table
is topped. Jupp Heynckes is the coach. Sounds like a short best-of compilation from the past 20
years of Bayern Munich.

...and the following group stage draw.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is a decent striker. Quite a bit more than decent, but
following his disappointing first season at Schalke (13 goals in 35 matches in all competitions),
we'll only slowly roll out the superlatives. Anyway, he has now scored 12 in 6 and made sure
Schalke's Europa League season wasn't disappointingly cut short.
Steve Cherundolo and Hannover will try to keep their momentum alive against visiting Mainz while
Timothy Chandler and Nurnberg can break their losing streak with a win against Bavarian rivals
Augsburg.
Altidore scored two for AZ, increasing his total to five goals in all competitionsThe second leg of the playoffs to enter the group of the Europa League took place this afternoon
across the continent, with several U.S. stars in action. Jozy Altidore's pair of goals helped AZ
cruise past Aaselund, while Carlos Bocanegra's first goal in a Rangers uniform wasn't enough to put
the Glasgow crew through.
Clint Dempsey and Fulham just need to avoid collapse in Ukraine while Steve Cherundolo and Hannover
will try to hang onto their thin lead at Sevilla in Thursday's final push for the Europa League
group stage.
Clint Dempsey celebrated his return to European play with a pair of goals for the Fulham faithful
while Steve Cherundolo's Hannover got a leg up on Sevilla in their first leg game.
Hannover's Ivorian striker Didier Ya Konan came on as a substitute for Jan Schlaudraff in
yesterday's Europa League play-off against Sevilla. While he didn't have a direct impact on the
game, he did produce this little gem. A great back-heel pass under pressure to Henning Hauger for a
slightly delayed one-two.
Timothy Chandler and Nurnberg face a tough visit to the home of the defending Bundesliga champions
while Steve Cherundolo and Hannover will hope to keep their Europa League momentum rolling against
Hertha.
Jan Schlaudraff had one of those games. He used to have a couple of those at
Alemannia Aachen too. They earned him a call up to the national team and a premature transfer to
Bayern Munich. From there it all went downhill for a couple of seasons, all the way to the point
where Hannover desperately wanted to get rid of their top earner.

Brad Friedel could make his Tottenham debut against Hearts and Steve Cherundolo will hope to be
back on the field for Hannover against Sevilla as qualification for the Europa League group stage
enters its final round.
Steve Cherundolo and Timothy Chandler will square off when Hannover visits Nurnberg while Matt
Taylor and Paderborn will try to get back on the winning track when they host Furth.

The final play-off round to reach the group stage of the Europa League was set on Friday, giving
Clint Dempsey and Fulham a return to Ukraine, and setting up a tough Spanish test for Steve
Cherundolo's Hannover.

The wonderful thing about the Bundesliga is its unpredictability. You just never know what is
going to happen. Witness the remarkable rises of Mainz, Hannover or Nürnberg last season, while
teams expected to challenge at the top of the table – Stuttgart, Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg –
spent much of the season desperately fighting against relegation.
