Trapattoni vents his fury at FIFA

One Team In Ireland 20 November @ 06:16 PM EST
Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has vented his fury at FIFA in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.
'I would like to know what have I done to (Sepp) Blatter,' Trapattoni said. 'If he explains it to me at least I would be calm.
'I often go to schools and speak of fair play.

Cantona: Domenech’s the worst coach since Louis XVI

Red Rants 20 November @ 04:22 PM EST

We continue to edge closer to United related news, but this was too difficult to pass up. When the King speaks we have to listen:

"I think that Raymond Domenech is the worst coach in French football since Louis XVI. If it was up to me, I'd put (Bordeaux coach) Laurent Blanc in charge of the France team," the former Manchester United hero continued.

How Long Until We Forgive Thierry Henry?

WorldCupBlog 20 November @ 02:10 PM EST

Latest development in the already long running Thierry Henry handball incident (or "la main de dieu" as it's being called by some) is that Henry himself thinks a replay is a good idea:

"The fairest solution would be to replay the game but it is not in my control," said the Barcelona striker.

Pottinger tackles… Henry loves Basketball

Inthestands.co.uk - Football Banter For the Masses - Football Blog 20 November @ 01:41 PM EST

Right then, whilst I'm here I might as well sort this shit out.

First things first, I WANT the game to be replayed. Having said that it would be an absolute travesty if FIFA ordered a rematch of the game, as it would set an extremely dangerous precedent in football whereby the result on the pitch isn't final.

Arsene Wenger’s Wise Words on the Fiasco in Paris

EPL Talk 20 November @ 12:42 PM EST

The appetite for commentary on the farce in Paris still seems strong, and I thought Arsene Wenger had a very wise take on the entire situation today. Wenger is, obviously, a French supporter and very close with Henry. In fairness to the Irish fans, the world football community, and for the sake of Henry, he called for the game to be replayed.

Slowly out of the shell: MLS Cup, Ireland and an Orange Future

Nutmegged 20 November @ 11:56 AM EST
OK, after taking this week off to mostly just troll other blogs and not comment too much on MLS or soccer in general after letting last week's loss sink in, I do have some thoughts on a rash of topics:

The world waits for Blatter to break his silence..

Soccerblog 20 November @ 09:28 AM EST

Douglas Adams will tell you that the best way to escape from the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal is to close your eyes.It is so mind boggling stupid that it thinks if you can't see it, it can't see you.
Our own football version of the Bugblatter is sitting with mouth tightly closed and is thereby firmly convinced that no one will notice that he hasn't bothered to say anything about the Henry Handball issue one way or the other.

Henry’s Story Continues to “Evolve” Thanks to Public Opinion

EPL Talk 20 November @ 09:20 AM EST

Since Thierry Henry's handball on Wednesday, the former Arsenal striker's reaction has gone from arrogance, to indifference to being contrite. From where I sit, this simply proves that Henry is a Public Relations driven phony. He's cultivated an image for over a decade in conjunction with his handlers and now sees the possibility it can all come undone.

Soccer to fair play: Drop dead

Soccer Source 20 November @ 07:25 AM EST
To echo our host's views on this, what took place between France and Ireland on Wednesday night really was a travesty. And lo and behold, here to rub salt in still-fresh wounds is soccer's top authority, FIFA.
For those who don't know, FIFA is about as honest, fair-minded and interested in bettering the world as your average African dictator -- and even that's probably an insult to African dictators. Click to continue reading...

Half a Sensei Out?/FIFA Screws The Pooch

Soccer Tickets Online 20 November @ 06:33 AM EST

Two things to talk about this morning that affect my entire sports weekend. First, let me say that I am very glad that my wife (who is going on a mission trip to a far-off land for about a week) is not flying through France or Ireland to get there because right now someone is probably screaming their head off in the streets of Ireland.

Morning all, good to see the Thierry Henry stuff has blown over. Erm ... I wouldn't normally bother but I think it's only fair that someone tries to counter the lies and the hysteria. He's not one of ours now but he was and he was one of our best. Plus it's kinda quiet.

The Mirror:

Liam Brady last night branded Thierry Henry "shameful" after launching a bitter attack on FIFA for fixing the outcome.

Video: Daniele De Rossi admits to a handball

Soccerblog 20 November @ 01:19 AM EST

My introduction to Daniele De Rossi was the vicious elbow that he threw at Brian McBride, leaving his face bloody in the USA vs Italy match in the 2006 World Cup. It left a negative impression of him but here is De Rossi doing something rare in football nowadays, acknowledging that he used his hand to score a goal against Serie side Messina.

The Only Thing You Need to Know About France-Ireland Is the 100 Greatest Quotes from The Wire

The Run of Play - Soccer in Style 19 November @ 08:08 PM EST

Stowe sent me this "100 Greatest Quotes from The Wire" video on Twitter the other day, and I watched it, and I was like, "Oh my God, The Wire," because I haven't seen it in a few years and this sort of brought it all back. Then, for no obvious reason, this video started tugging at my brain after the Thierry Henry handball rocked the core of everything that had a core to rock yesterday.

The match ended in controversy as France scored in extra time on a goal from William Gallas. Thierry Henry clearly had a handball before passing to Gallas for the goal but it wasn't called by the referee.

Trying To Dissect The Thierry Henry Handball

Well, at least "The Sun" didn't go with "The Hand Of Frog" as their headline. This, however, was about the best thing that could be said for the media hysteria over Thierry Henry's handball for France against Ireland last night. First of all, though, we may as well take a quick look at the incident itself.

Henry's Handball & the Moral Ambiguity of Football

From a Left Wing 19 November @ 06:07 PM EST
The ball rebounded to Thierry Henry's hand, first once and then again. He scooped it gently, and let it fall to his feet. He made a controlled pass to his teammate William Gallas, who scored a much-needed goal against Ireland. The referee didn't call the handballs (clearly visible in recordings of the match). International Break Roundup

The Offside: Manchester United 19 November @ 04:04 PM EST

This past week(s) we've have a couple united boys playing for their countries, attempting to qualify for South Africa. While its not directly "United Related", there's no way I cannot bring up the most blatant handball since Maradonna's "Hand of God".

So a quick roundup of the scores and the United personnel playing before I get to more on to what is going to be the single most discussed play in recent times:

France 1 1 Ireland (2-1 Aggregate)
France : Patrice Evra
Ireland : John O'Shea, Darren Gibson

Portugal 1 B&H (2-0 Aggregate)
Portugal : Nani

Okay, so the handball (seen/touch/heard) 'round the world.

So basically, since Maradona there hasn’t been a ‘handball’ incident?

Gunners Today 19 November @ 10:17 AM EST

Everybody is talking about it, so I thought I'd join in. It has been dubbed the Hand of god II. As if the plot of this sequel is similar to the first one.

Before we can go into further debate, I'm not denying that it wasn't a handball. It will be very difficult to suggest otherwise. The actual handball happened in two parts, the first seemed accidental but the second most definitely wasn't.

Video: One more time

Soccerblog 19 November @ 09:40 AM EST

Thierry Henry's left forearm makes first contact with the ball but then as the ball bounces off ever so slightly his hand comes up and he steers the ball onto his foot. The first touch was inadvertent but his second touch had clear intent. What is so amazing about this is that the linesman on the opposite side should have seen happened because as far as one can see his vision remains unobstructed with Henry furthest out clear of the Irish defenders and Shay Given.

France Vs Ireland: Enough is Enough, The Time for Televised Decision Making Is Now!

The hard luck of the Irish

It will come as scant consolation to Ireland, their backroom staff, their players and their massive support (which probably now includes the whole known world outside the borders of France), that maybe this latest travesty could be the death knell to all those who believe that 'honest' mistakes are part and parcel of the game.

Seems like a whole lot of past and present Arsenal connections have played or are playing a very influential part in the France vs Ireland match and its aftermath.

The Dismissal of a Replay was Worse than Henry's Handball

A More Splendid Life 19 November @ 07:18 AM EST
I was reluctant at first to write about this, and everyone from my non-soccer life was soliciting opinions on Henry's handball against Ireland, but I do have one or two things to say.
I first want to echo Brian Phillips remark yesterday: "Don't call it a "controversial goal." It was a visibly illegitimate goal. Click to continue reading...
