Wolfsburg edged closer to booking a place in the knock-out round out the Champions League thanks to
a very positive performance on the pitch. Besiktas were consequently bundled out of the
competition, owing to an early goal from Zvjezdan Misimovic, and a late strike each from Christian
Gentner and Edin Dzeko.

VfL Wolfsburg vs Besiktas
Last year's Bundesliga champions have been disappointing this season. They have only shown
glimpses of the wonderful attacking football that we were all spoiled with this past year.
Grafite is back from a club-enforced break following his red card against Besiktas a fortnight
ago.

Manchester United vs CSKA Moscow
I believe there is some drama to be had from Group B and I expect this fixture to provide it.
The table at the moment has United with six points and then Wolfsburg and Moscow with three
points.
When United visit Russia they will have a difficult task on their hands.

Wolfsburg, the German champions arrived at Old Trafford, full of confidence and that was quickly
put into their play, as for the first 20 minutes there won't be many teams coming to Old Trafford

CSKA Moscow vs Besiktas
Turkish side Besiktas are making the always difficult trip to Russia to face Moscow. They come
off a 1-0 loss to Manchester United and will be keen to get a point in Russia.
To do so they will have to find the back of the net, something they have had problems doing.

First UEFA Champions league game, 1st win, any win in the champions league is a good result home or
away. But as I am united perfectionist, I'm probably not the only reds fan that was not too
happy...

Proof it's just 11 v 11, football matches aren't played on paper and more cliches Football is a
mixed up game, and results in Group B of the Confederations Cup only serve to prove that. It is
probably fair to say that Brazil were the best team in the group having won all three of their

Germany must avoid defeat today in order to prevent being eliminated in the Euro 2008 group
stage. That sentence isn't one many people thought they would see but the pre-tournament favorites
are just in that position after losing to Croatia in its second game of the tournament.
Germany must register a draw or win to advance to the quarterfinals, where a meeting with
Portugal awaits.

Saturday 14th June I arise early, shower, shave and bound back to Potting shed number one, ready
for another day's cutting edge journalism. I'd left the other boys last night with the
understanding that we'd be getting a full day's work in today so am somewhat surprised to see the
curtains drawn and the door locked.

Business as usual for the Germans
So we are a weekend in to Euro 2008 and as yet no surprise, and not even a surprise goal from an underdog. Is this the route the tournament will take? Its looking like a feast of football is upon us if Germany v Poland is anything to go by, and whilst I am deeply upset by our failure to qualify it does make it somewhat easier to just sit back and enjoy the quality.

Before this tournament started a lot of people had Croatia down as their dark horses to cause a major upset in the European Championships and who cold blame them after Slaven Bilic's side came through a tough qualifying group to make it to this years competition. But having watched them struggle to overcome Austria last [.

In today's Times, Tony Cascarino condemns Steve McClaren in terms so damning it's a wonder the man
isn't the latest incarnation of Satan. He defends England's players, the English youth coaching
system, foreign players in the Premier League, and lays the blame for England's failure to qualify,
in its entirity, at McClaren's feet.

I'm feeling a bit better about things now after a horrible day of blind fury. So let's step back
and try to assess, rationally, what went wrong. And what went right. And to be positive, I'll start
with that. The Good: Peter Crouch: Literally the only man on the pitch for the whole 90 minutes who

First up: Croatia. Croatia: Goalkeeper: Stipe Pletikosa, a regular in the Croatian national team
and the first-choice goalkeeper since the 2002 World Cup (although he was injured for much of Euro
2004). Hasn't made many mistakes since his Under-21s days. Defence: On the right, Manchester City's
summer signing Vedran Corluka will turn out for Croatia.

Steve McClaren still won't reveal his starting 11 for tomorrow's match against Croatia, but that
isn't going to stop me speculating. Goalkeeper: The Times is reporting that Paul Robinson has
performed abysmally in training, which probably means Scott Carson will get his first competitive
start for England. The Guardian has the same story, but goes further [.

Football365.com columnist John Nicholson thinks that the FA should create a new Championship team -
England FC - made up entirely of young English players, to serve as a means of training young
players outside of the usual system. Is it genius or just batshit?
