Grenoble finally off the mark

SoccerLens 09 November @ 04:39 AM EST

What did UE Engordany of Andorra, FK Milano Kumanovo of Macedonia, Ankaraspor of Turkey and Grenoble of France had in common before last Sunday? They were all teams from European top divisions, who hadn't picked up a single point so far this season. And yes, there actually is a football league in Andorra.

Grenoble remain pointless

Soccer Pie 04 November @ 03:30 AM EST

It is difficult for a team to recover after losing few games in a row so you can imagine how Grenoble players feel after losing 12 straight games. The League Cup defeat to Lorient probably wouldn't be a problem if it weren't for 11 defeats in as many Ligue 1 games this term.

The major non-event of last weekend was the cancellation of the Classico between Marseille and Paris SG. Many arrests, mostly local fans when it seemed like the Parisians started it all. Click to continue reading...

Ligue 1 round-up

Soccer Pie 27 October @ 06:43 AM EST

French Ligue 1 have become one of the strongest leagues in Europe during the last few years and it is constantly justifying its reputation. Round 10 this season was supposed to bring us the biggest derby of French football but the OM-PSG derby was postponed because two PSG players had contracted the swine flu.

After Tuesday's unbelievable victory at Anfield, we can only hope that the players have come back down to earth- because I'm still on cloud nine- and are ready to dispatch there next league obstacle and maintain their miniscule +1 goal differential lead over second place Montpellier?

It was quite the week for French teams in European football where Lyon showed incredible poise and Hugo Lloris certainly scored some points as the # 1 goalkeeper for France for the World Cup...it was also somewhat poetic justice to see a team Houllier successfully coached for 2 years beat Benitez's Liverpool at Anfield. Well, after the short but much needed international break, Lyon head back to office. The break gave us some much needed time for the laundry list of players out due to injury, to continue their convalescences.

Jeu du Jour Week 8: How the mighty have fallen

Some People are On The Pitch 09 October @ 09:10 AM EST
As we've been reporting recently on Jeu Du Jour, each of the main contenders for the Ligue 1 title this season have been losing their unbeaten records one by one. Going into last weekend's games, only two were left and one of those, unsurprisingly, was the seemingly unbeatable Bordeaux. Unbeatable, that is, until Saturday when Saint Etienne, of all teams, handed out a 3-1 beating at the Stade Geoffrey-Guichard knocking the French champions off the top spot. Dirty Tackle 29 September @ 12:35 AM EST

What's amazing about this clip isn't so much the bad tackle or the retaliation from behind that earned both Grenoble's David Jemmali and Auxerre's Ireneusz Jelen red cards, but the fact that Danijel Ljuboja still has that ridiculously unsymmetrical hairstyle that he had way back during the 2006 World Cup.

Jeu du Jour Week 5: Déjà vu, Grenoble

Some People are On The Pitch 17 September @ 12:03 PM EST
You know what they say about title-challenging teams: if you can play badly and still win, you've got what it takes to be the champions. The question is, does the reverse apply for relegation-threatened teams?
Grenoble are challenging the theory at the moment, that's for sure. Having played five and lost five so far this season, they've played well more often than not and yet still won nothing for their efforts. Click to continue reading...
