A Day of Fury in Brazilian Football

See The Cup 19 November @ 12:43 AM EST

As you're probably aware, Brazilian football (CBF and CONMEBOL for that matter) have no respect for the international break. So two matches took place in Brazil on Wednesday night one for Copa Sudamericana and one for the Brasileiro. And it was enough for the biggest collective nervous breakdown, I've ever seen.

Lucas Leiva Interview: I’m willing to sweat blood for Liverpool

SoccerLens 11 November @ 05:01 AM EST

It's been a long, strange trip for young Lucas Leiva since he first stepped foot on the Anfield pitch for the first time in the summer of 2007. The midfielder was a highly publicised signing, after he made his way from Brazilian side Gremio for around £6 million to Merseyside quickly becoming a star-in-waiting.

AnfieldRed’s Exclusive Interview with Liverpool’s Lucas Leiva

Anfield Red 09 November @ 05:30 AM EST
It's been quite a roller coaster ride for Brazilian Lucas Leiva since he made his was to Anfield from Gremio for around £5m during the summer of 2007. Instead of getting an opportunity to learn the subtle nuances of the Premier League, Leiva has been throw into the fire in his second season with the [. Click to continue reading...

Lucas Will Continue To Improve - Rafa Benitez

Anfield Talk 07 November @ 12:14 PM EST
The shrill of Franck de Bleeckere's final whistle had barely subsided when the phone-ins started, looking to apportion blame for Liverpool's Champions League struggles.
Predictably, the names were the same. Angry of Anfield and Worried of Woolton all knew which players were culpable for stopping Liverpool securing a win in Lyon which would have kept them in control of their European destiny. Click to continue reading...

DTotD: Three reds

Dirty Tackle 06 November @ 03:46 AM EST

Sao Paulo managed to hold on to a 1-1 draw against Gremio on Wednesday despite having three players get sent off in the final 15 minutes. Of the three tackles that earned early dismissals, I think the butt kick/head slap combo (15 seconds in) would have to be the most original.

But if you want to see something that will make the above video look like bingo night at the old folks home, check out this clip of the MMA battle between the BYU and New Mexico women's teams.

Brasileiro: Palmeiras Has Company…

See The Cup 26 October @ 02:54 PM EST

.... Lots of it. After looking like the virtual champion of Campeonato Brasileiro, Palmeiras lost points and the chances of confirming the title. And with that, 4 clubs have now the chance of taking the title away from the side headed by Muricy Ramalho. In the 31st round of Brasileiro, Atletico-MG, Inter, Sao Paulo and Flamengo won their matches and are just a few step away from jumping to first (something that can happen in the next round).

Lucas Gives Rafa Backing

Anfield Talk 24 October @ 11:09 AM EST
Lucas Leiva has vowed to repay Rafa Benitez for his faith, with the Liverpool boss now the man under pressure at Anfield.
Brazilian Lucas has constantly been scrutinised by fans for his unconvincing displays in a Reds shirt since his arrival from Gremio in 2007.
Benitez has persistently defended the player's abilities, but now the tides have turned as the Spanish boss is under immense pressure as a result of Liverpool's dreadful form. Click to continue reading...

Maradona y que la sigan chupando…

FutblogMexicano 15 October @ 09:23 AM EST

Pitch invader demands Fat Ron

Dirty Tackle 12 October @ 01:45 PM EST

The injury-laced success of Fat Ronaldo since he's joined Corinthians has evidently not gone unnoticed by fans of Brazil's national team. During their surprising loss in Bolivia on Sunday, one portly fellow (that's not Ronaldo himself, is it?) ran out onto the pitch, holding up a sign promoting Fat Ron's inclusion in the national team just as the second half began.

Lucas Feeling The Love At Anfield

Anfield Talk 15 September @ 12:19 PM EST
Brazilian midfielder Lucas believes he is winning over the Liverpool fans after being given a tough time by sections of the Anfield crowd last season.
The 22-year-old's form dipped during the Reds' prolonged spell of poor home form which eventually cost them the title.
Lucas has burst back onto the scene this season however as a stronger and more determined player who has even handled the tough job of stepping into Xabi Alonso's shoes. Click to continue reading...

Lucas - I'm No Alonso

Anfield Talk 15 September @ 12:15 PM EST
Liverpool midfielder Lucas does not think he should be compared to former Anfield ace Xabi Alonso.
The 22-year-old was recruited by Rafa Benitez from Brazilian side Gremio in 2007 but was not employed as a regular starter in his first two seasons with the club.
However, after Alonso left for Real Madrid over the summer, Lucas has been given the responsibility of filling the hole in central midfield left by the Spaniard. Click to continue reading...

Rafael Benitez: Lucas 'Key' For Liverpool Against Burnley

Fan Diary #1: Is This Lucas Leiva’s Season?

EPL Talk 10 August @ 10:50 AM EST

Saturday, 8th Aug 2009

It was the last of the pre-season friendlies. The last chance to gauge how our side looks going into the season proper. We gathered outside the pub in our red kits, awaiting the sound of the deadbolt sliding out of place. All season the sound of that door unlocking will be like Pavlov's bell to Boston's Liverpool supporters, a signal it is time to pour inside, choose the best vantage point and wait for the friend with the iPhone to announce the starting line-up.

Lucas Leiva has confessed that he could leave Liverpool if he is not granted more starting opportunities this season, with Corinthians the most likely destination.

Man Utd: No more summer signing represents disappointment in Nani and Anderson

Soccerblog 13 July @ 07:37 PM EST

When Cristiano Ronaldo was sold for 80m, one of the mitigating reasons was that the money would be used to buy big name players to offset the effect of his loss. Players like Franck Ribery and David Villa were mentioned as replacements.

The club then decided to change the policy and not sign any more players over 26 years as with advancing age the resale value would drop sharply at the end of a five or six year contract.
