The Escapist Parallax that is Match of the Day

Parallax is a displacement or difference in the apparent position of an object viewed along two different lines of sight. The same scientific practice can be applied to Match of the Day as James Shaw will vividly discuss. Entertainment is, and can certainly be construed, as simplistic. As one theoretical term alludes to; entertainment is a form of escapism.

Many years ago I read The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, the classic novel set in the time of the great depression in the US. Families migrated towards California in search of work and it was evocative and really quite bleak.

Without trying to be melodramatic in any way, shape or form, this Interlull is already like the great depression and I'm considering packing up and heading west in search of elusive blog fodder.

The pleasure of seeing Spurs play football. White shirts, navy blue shorts, a proper game. That's all I ask. Not so much the victory, not even its emphatic nature, but just to know that our season is under way and a sense of how we are and what's to come.

Monday's cloud of Great Depression, created by an unhealthy combination of high quality mystery drama and an increasing sense of personal anxiety, has blown away.

I've been catching up with Carnivale, the US series about a carnival travelling through the dustbowl during the Great Depression. It's compelling television but frankly not one to come home to after a bad day, evoking as it does a picture of poverty and suffering that places little value on human life.

Interesting article on the two economists, Keynes & Hayek. Obviously as a socialist I'd be on the Keynesian Economics side of the debate :
As their economies contracted, governments responded to their mounting budget deficits by raising taxes and cutting spending.
The Great Depression bottomed out at the end of 1932, with British unemployment having reached 20%, American unemployment even higher.

As has been previously described on the PSP, the friendly has historically been an important opportunity for the transmission of new football tactics. It's also a great way for clubs and federations to make some money and for hitherto unknown players to be seen by top clubs. From the fan's perspective, the friendly is often a rare opportunity to see top flight international soccer and also serves as an important community builder, whether those communities are ethnic groups that identify with particular international clubs or the soccer community as a whole.

I am happy that the NASL is taking a pro-active stance after the USSF revoked their preliminary sanction for D2 soccer last week. The NASL under Aaron Davidson and Traffic Sports is currently working with the USSF to regain sanctioning in time for 2011 action as the D2 league in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.
