As football remembered the fallen over the weekend, one of the most poignant acts of remembrance
came at Tynecastle.13 Hearts players volunteered to fight in 1914. The McCrae's Battalion website
takes up the story:In August 1914 Great Britain went to war with Germany. As eager young men
flocked to join Lord Kitchener's volunteer army, professional football became the target of a

The year is 1986....and I am ten years old. Cable television has landed in Great Britain for the

It's so difficult being me. ... People don't understand. ... Soul patches are still cool, right?
... Being so good at football that all the big clubs in Europe want you just isn't fair. They're
pulling me in every direction and making it all so complicated and all I want to do is play for
Real Madrid and never have anything even remotely negative or stressing ever happen to me or anyone
I know.

Much like learning how to swim or riding a bike for the first time, football is a pursuit that
should be undertaken at least once in ones life. It brings so many people together whether it to be
playing or watching. It is known as a universal language, a bond that unites us all.
Which brings me to the event that could shape our futures; change lives, or simply provides an
excuse to watch the TV for a couple of weeks, perking up every so often whenever the women
gymnastics kicks off!

World football's governing body FIFA has now given the green light for Great Britain to put out an
all English line up for their football team in the London 2012 Olympic games. The decision to allow
the host nation for the games to include a British football team in world sport's centrepiece had
previously courted a great deal of controversy amongst the home nations, as the governing bodies of
Nothern Ireland, Scotland and Wales had all voiced understandable concerns that the move would
compromise their independent status for other international football competitions - a sentiment
seemingly put forward by FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

The Munich air disaster in 1958 devastated the soccer world after a plane carrying the Manchester

was also covered in the United States.

For us Brits there's nothing quite like getting on over on the Aussies when it comes to sport. They
are just too good at it all so when the occasion comes round that we do end up looking down on them
it's good to milk it for all it's worth. The 2005 Ashes may have been eclipsed by the debacle in
Australia that followed but that doesn't change the fact that for those fleeting 12 months we had
the one up on them.

Scottish and Irish FAs have every right to pour scorn on the idea on the prospect on a Team GB

have link arms and be all happy-clappy under the Great Britain banner.

I'd like to wish everyone here in the States a happy, and most importantly, safe, Independence

Even though Congress voted to declare independence from Great Britain on July 2, 1776, it wasn't
until two days later that Thomas Jefferson's wording in the document itself was approved. It also
wasn't actually signed by most delegates until August 2, but for some reason, we've chosen to
commemorate American independence on the 4th of July.

Whether you knew it or not, yesterday was a notable date in the sporting calendar. Why? Because
exactly five years on from July 27th 2007, the 2012 Olympic Games will begin in London.
Those of us living in London are by now aware of the plans which are well underway to build or
upgrade the venues for each event, to say nothing of encouraging ordinary people to take up a sport
which, five years down the line, they might even represent Great Britain in.
