Paul Riley and the Philadelphia Independence seemingly got everything they wanted in Friday's
WPS Draft. When I spoke to the coach on Wednesday, he said they would be looking for a striker,
some defensive depth and a goalkeeper, and in their six picks, the Independence added three
strikers, two defenders, and a goalkeeper.
The Philadelphia Independence coaching staff went into the 2012 WPS Draft with an offensive
mentality, picking up three attackers. They rounded out their league high six draft picks by
picking up two defenders and a goalkeeper. In a draft that focused heavily on midfield pickups,
Paul Riley and his staff were able to capitalize on picks made by other teams.
The Philadelphia Independence drafted six players in Friday's WPS draft, with University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee forward Sarah Hagen being the top pick. The big question is whether they'll get
her to move over from Bayern Munich, where she's under contract.
The Independence then took UC-Irvine defender CoCo Goodson and Florida State defender Toni
Pressley in the second round, Santa Clara goalkeeper Bianca Henninger and Portland forward
Danielle Foxhoven in the third, and Maryland forward Jasmyne Spencer in the fourth round.

Today is Slovenia and what on paper should be an easier game than last Friday in Paris.
Grades. Is there anything more cruel? An entire semester of work, and a little symbol reflects
your homework, your exams, your term papers, and maybe your participation. Naturally, I can
understand why some people in the soccersphere have objected to the application of "grades" to
soccer player performances.
Tough one.
Can't call them "snap judgments" because they took way too long. TSG's Tuesday will be
along shortly with the official review.
Here are some thoughts that I want to spill out on the screen. We'll give it the "Good, Bad,
Ugly" treatment because it works well here.
Gloves?
French substitute Loïc Rémy was the lone goal scorer in the 72nd minute when Marvin Martin
chipped the ball over the U.S. back four. Rémy latched on to the ball knocking Clarance Goodson
down in his wake and finished cleanly past goalkeeper Tim Howard. The Everton keeper had done well
to keep France off the scoreboard [.

Good first half. Familiar lack of finishing. Weak second and predictably punished. The defense did
look better organized (at least until Bocanegra left) though uncomfortable against the quick
counter, something that should have Mexico salivating. Anyway, just a few thoughts...

Predictably, there are still many outstanding questions regarding Juergen Klinsmann and the US
national team after Klinsmann's second and third games as US coach. On Tuesday, the US demonstrated
sustained effort for 90 minutes and crafted occasional quality sequences against a Belgium team
that effectively pressed the US without the ball and featured dangerous attacking talents.
After each match the contributors to New England Soccer Today will rate the performances of
the United States National Team players who made an appearance on a 1 to 10 scale (1 horrendous, 5
average, 10 perfection). This week Julian Cardillo and Sean Donahue contributed ratings for the
USA's 1-0 friendly loss to Belgium.
What: The United States Men's National Team (USMNT) is hosting the Costa Rican National
Team at the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles, California tonight in an international friendly.
When/Where: 11 pm on ESPN 2. Andy Roddick and some guy with the last name of "Sock" are
currently playing in the second set of their tennis match on ESPN 2.
Both Freddy Adu and Landon Donovan burned up youth teams as young forwards, and Klinsmann seems to
have returned them to that spot, perhaps because of the current dearth of American attacking talent
in front. DaMarcus Beasley as a forward seems to me a stretch, however. I'd really rather have seen
Herculez Gomez get the call.
After dishing out a tray of morsels last night, it has become clear that I have too many morsels.
I'm hogging morsels. Nobody likes a morsel hoggererer...What USMNT call-ups can I confirm for later
today? Well, there's Chandler, Cherundolo and Goodson. It's also been strongly hinted to me that
Bedoya, Edu and Jones are in, while I have seen indications that Agudelo is also on the roster for

I felt like I was watching my favorite Premier League side Arsenal Saturday night. The United
States built a 2-0 advantage over Mexico in the Gold Cup final before coughing up four goals. It
was an epic collapse and now it is time to look at what went wrong for the US.
3:10 p.m. Well, ok, we're not actually at the Rose Bowl yet. Luis and I decided to be environmental
and carpool to the game and at this moment, we're stuck in the traffic leading to the stadium
parking lots. People are walking past us at a steady clip, going faster than the molasses pace of
the crowded cars.

Yes you have Jack. On a clothesline that you were a chief architect in imagining, building,
stealing from, hiding behind, and using to line your pockets for over two decades.
I love how he hid behind his role as guardian of fellow Caribbean nations only to bully them all
into kowtowing to his every whim.
The States will likely have to do better than just a Goodson header--the lone tally in game
one--to knock off Panama..
The United States heads into Wednesday night's Gold Cup semifinal game with quite a bit of
familiarity of their opponent, still brandishing the bruises of playing them in the group stage and
now with the ability to hit the reset button on a FIFA game gone wrong.
US Strategy Bob Bradley elected to change his tactics after playing a 4-2-2-2 in the three group
matches. Landon Donovan was unavailable to start after arriving late from his sister's wedding.
Consequently, Sasha Kljestan and Alejandro Bedoya were brought into the starting XI to replace
Donovan and Chris Wondolowski.
Today's subs bench has a couple of entertaining names not seen there yet in this tourney. It looks

A slow start once again came back to haunt the US as they lost to Panama 2-1 in the Gold Cup
last night. Just as in the World Cup last summer, the U.S. fell behind in the first half, made a
big recovery in the second half, but were not quite able to get back on levels terms. Bob Bradley
has to fix this problem now.
There's the embarrassment of sending out a less-than-full-strength side and getting spanked at home
by the world champions. And then there's that oh-so familiar feeling to soccer fans the world over
of being the superior side, playing well, and yet being victimized by a ref or caught on the
break.
C'est le jeu.
While some of the referee calls were questionable, it is no excuse as the US loses it's first group
stage match of the Gold Cup... ever... 2-1 with a simply horrific display along the back line.
Goodson's goal late doesn't make up for the penalty he caused nor the hack fest he put on display
last night.
The US chased the game from the opening whistle....
The US falls to Panama in Game 2 of the Group Stage. It's the first loss ever for the States in
the Group Stage of the Gold Cup. The game was a fascinating tactical battle.
• Panama was excellent. The US failed to execute and seemed ill-prepared.
