2009 was a rough season for Ben Olsen and DC United. (Getty Images)
We knew going into 2009 that the calendar for DC United could be a fairly packed one. Possibly
Champions League matches, US Open Cup title to defend, summer friendlies, and of course the regular
season slate. It turned out to be just the case as DC United played a schedule so packed this year
it definitely raised some eyebrows about how little depth MLS clubs really do have.
It looks like we have shut the Spuds up for another few months then with a performance that left
even the most hardy Spurs fans noting that they had some way to go to catch up with us.
I had a very good feeling before the game, a feeling I hadn't had since that 5-1 beating we
took. Maybe it was confidence or just a sign of what was to come, whatever it was I liked it and
enjoyed every second of this North London Derby.
Contrary to popular belief, I don't give player ratings each game just for fun. I also use these
ratings to formulate the yearly Annual DCUMD Ratings, or ADRs. Each Top Shelf is
worth 5 points, each Call is worth 3, and each Rail is worth 1. Soehn C R C C R T T R T R C R R R T R R (2. Click to continue reading...

Stealing on old bit from the late Big O and Dukes Show, we will spend the next month or so playing
"River or Life" with members of the DC United organization, starting with the front office, and
then moving on to the players, by position. In an offseason that is bound to include multitudes of
changes throughout the club, this will be a great way to show the team who we the fans want to see
return next year. Click to continue reading...
The Spanish Copa del Rey began its fourth round on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 with four matches.
One of them was Real Madrid traveling to face Alcercon who plays in the Segunda or 2nd tier of
Spain. Madrid were the favorites heading into the match and started most of their top stars. Here's
a recap of the match along with video highlights.
In Kano, Nigeria, the U.S. U-17 Men's National Team fell in their opening round match against Spain
2-1, despite an early red card to Spanish defender Sergi Gomez and a Jack McInerney strike in the
fourth minute. Spain managed to take the lead with two counter-attacking goals in the 22nd and 30th
minutes. Click to continue reading...
Whilst Cristiano Ronaldo deals with his injury problems he can still manage to find time for
this WAG, Marisa Gomez-Sandoval, who we are reliably told is a Reality TV star and a Model so is
clearly not someone who wants to attract media interest at all! Thanks to Dirty
Tackle for the heads up on this one.
Although he is apparently still seeing Italian model Raffaella Fico, the Spanish press and
Portuguese press are reporting that each other say (so it must be true!) that he's also taken up
with Spanish model and reality TV participant Marisa Gomez-Sandoval (pictured above), who has
somehow earned the nickname "chica cañón" (girl canon?
Spain scored two short-handed goals to come back and win in Group E on Monday. With just over a
minute played, Spain defender Sergi Gomez was sent off. The United States responded with Jack
McInerney's goal in the fourth-minute, but that would be it for the US offense. Borja equalized for
Spain in the 22nd and Pablo Sarabia scored what would be the winner in the 30th-minute. Click to continue reading...
The U.S. Under-17 national team kicks off its Under-17 World Cup in Nigeria today against Spain
(2pm, ESPNU).
I will be providing commentary throughout the match so please feel free to follow along here. As
always, feel free to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.
The Wizards ended the 2009 season without a playoff berth, but they went out by helping to kill DC
United's season. Along with other results around the league, KC's 2-2 draw with DC last night
eliminated DC from making the playoffs as well. A late penalty kick by Claudio Lopez proving to be
the tying goal. Click to continue reading...
It's a Saturday night, and I didn't want to watch the damn game at a pub on an f'ing delay for
whatever reason MLSE had in mind. And technically, should "f'ing" begin with an "an" instead of an
"a", because if you say it, it's more like 'effing'... semantics. We've got a damn rain delay. Sure, there's thunder and lightning, but big deal. Click to continue reading...
By defintion, the Etchy Award goes to DC United's most valuable player. The winner of the award
should be the player who United can least afford to live without, and who gives the team the best
chance of winning. I'm going to present this award a bit differently because I want to give you
more choices and less bias. Click to continue reading...
Given the unfortunate results of the Chicago/Chivas and Marathon/San Juan matches last night, a
WIN for DC United on Saturday has now become all the more crucial. The number of playoff
spots at stake just dropped from 3 to 2 with the Fire's victory. What's worse though is that the
loss by Chivas USA means that Columbus has now clinched the Supporter's Shield, and therefore will
have nothing to play for in their final match against the Revolution on Sunday.
Click to continue reading...
After dropping three straight matches at home to MLS opponents, and with our most consistent
defender and our two most dynamic attackers out, most fans didn't really expect DC United to win
this match. Especially not against the soon-to-be back-to-back Supporters' Shield winners. And it
may not have been an attractive victory, but it was a victory none the less. Click to continue reading...
I'm not going to spend a lot of time discussing a game we should of won big that we did win big.
I saw some good things. And here we go... Good Stuff! - Christian Gomez. Every time I think that DC should cut ties with Gomez, he'll play like he dad
last night. He definitely elevates his game in tournament play, and teams need players that can do
that.
Talk about a beating. DC United beat up on some guys from Trinidad last night in the CONCACAF
Champions League. DC walloped San Juan Jabloteh 5-1 to hop into second place in Group B. Christian
Gomez and Boyzzz Khumalo each scored twice for United, with Fred adding the fifth goal. If Marathon
loses tonight against Toluca, United will advance to the quarterfinals next spring.
DC United comes off its 2-1 loss to San Jose to win 5-1 against San Juan Jabloteh. And what do
you know...the youth played a huge factor in this with the help of Christian Gomez and Fred.
Scoring for UNited was Gomez (13′,68′), Fred (30′), Khumalo (43′, 92+'). They key in this
match was how well the youth wokred together for this win.
Both MLS clubs had a chance to seize the initiative in their respective CONCACAF Champions
League groups last night, but only one managed to come through. D.C. walloped San Juan Jabloteh 5-1
to hop into second place in Group B, while Houston failed to score and lost to Pachuca 1-0. United
has completed a rather remarkable turnaround in the competition, after going winless last year and
dropping their first two this year.

Everyone was in good spirit's after last night's 5-1 drubbing of San Juan Jabloteh. See what
Boyzzz Khumalo, Milos Kocic, Chris Pontius, Christian Gomez and Tom Soehn had to say after the
game.
DC United rolled over San Juan Jabloteh at RFK Stadium on Wednesday night, beating them 5-1.
Christian Gomez opened the scoring in the 13th, followed by Helbert Carreiro Da Silva (30th) and
Boyzz Khumalo (43rd) to make it 3-0 at the half. It was Gomez again in the 68th before Jerrel
Britto got Jabloteh on the board in the 83rd. Click to continue reading...
Last week I made a big mistake in reading too much into the results of a win against a weak
opponent. Learning my lesson, let's just say that this match was a pleasure to watch. This is the
second time this season United has scored five goals, and it looked like the boys were having fun
out there. Does that mean though that they will carry this momentum into the match Saturday against Chivas? Click to continue reading...

Two goals each from Christian Gomez and Boyzzz Khumalo helped United easily dispatch of San Juan
Jabloteh this evening at RFK Stadium. The win was United's third in a row in CONCACAF Champions
League play and puts the team in great position to advance with just one game remaining in Group B
play.
Fans should turn their attention to the TV tomorrow night when CD Marathon (Honduras) hosts CD
Toluca (Mexico) on Galavision at 10pm ET.
As some have heard at this point, Josh Wicks is going to be out 4-6 weeks because of a
dislocated shoulder and torn MCL. Milos Kocic is the next in line for goalkeeper. Bill Hamid is not
available for league matches, only CONCACAF Champions League.
Last week, a handful of Kansas City Wizards players accompanied some kids from local non-profit
Spofford on a shopping spree at a local Dick's Sporting Goods. The children were given $100 by DSG
to spend on items of their choice, and Wizards players Herculez Gomez, Chance Myers, Graham Zusi
and Roger Espinoza joined them to help in the shopping. Click to continue reading...
I had a mixed weekend. I got contributions from most every player, but had two holes in my team -
Hutton and Gomez - and didn't have Torres, and the less likely Keane. So another weekend of
consolidating my stranglehold on the midtable.Still Given to play today, but I feel like we "all"
have him. Click to continue reading...
For the first time this season, Herculez Gomez did not appear in a game for the Wizards. Up until
last night, Gomez had appeared in all 25 league games and all 5 in the Wizards other
competitions. Kei Kamara appeared in his 100th game in all competitions in him MLS career last night. In the 38th minute, Claudio Lopez hit the 5,000 minute mark in all competitions for the Wizards. Click to continue reading...
Jimmy Conrad had a night to remember, and at the same time a night to forget. At the end the
Wizards kept their hopes alive with a come from behind win against Dallas that puts them 7 points
behind the last playoff spot with 5 games left.
The night started with the Wizards trying to win their first game at home since June 12th (yes,
a 3 month drought, including Superliga).
Having lost their last two Premiership games, Arsenal will be looking to take full advantage of
the Emirates support to get back on winning terms. Standing on their way are Roberto Martínez's
Wigan, who, according to their manager, are ready to cause an upset against one of the so-called
"Top Four".
