We're a small city in a region of 700,000 people. Not a professional mens football team worthy of a
mention, not now, not in living memory.
And yet we still produce quality - quality footballers and in the case of Joe Simunic, Carl Valeri
who are both still playing, star Internationals.
Throw in excellent A-League stalwarts, Nikolai Topor-Stanley, Matty Kemp and Brisbane Roars Kofi
Danning and we've almost got a half a team.
With his future very much in doubt, Alex Smith put in a strong performance on Sunday to help
Wellington Phoenix defeat Gold Coast United and move into fourth place in the A-League.
Wellington Phoenix will travel to Australia to take on last place Gold Coast United in a game that
is very important to American forward Alex Smith.
Dear Clive, once again you have proved you have little or no respect for active support at Gold
Coast United home games.
Rocky Visconte was the man of this match. Not because he was the best player, but because he played
so much better than he has before. Ange starting him over Issy added new Broich like movement to
the Roar on attack. For the first time in 5 games, Brisbane had a midfield that was always
searching forward, looking to beat the first defender and so drawing the second across and creating
space elsewhere.
35,000 fans turned up to the quietest Melbourne Victory I've ever heard.
Big Boo to Promoter Lou Sticca. Imagine taking a team to play Celtic, Man United or Liverpool and
saying your home supporter end, The Jungle, the Stretford End or The Kop are not allowed to sit in
their usual places. Call yourself a football fan Lou - think not.
So last week, despite making it difficult for ourselves, we managed to get all three points at
home. Great. But here comes the true test can we back it up with another strong performance? Will
we see the same passion, desire and teamwork that was evident against Gold Coast? I think so. I
hope
The latest episode of Victorycast, victoryblog.net's Melbourne Victory podcast is now available for
download! This week we discuss the fallout from Francis Awaritefe's departure and the pressures on
Mehmet Durakovic on his players, review the Gold Coast game and look ahead to this weeks match up
against Newcastle.
First seen during this past weekend's Gold Coast Sevens, the Australia Rugby Sevens Seviin 2012
home kit has been launched. Here are the details from a press release from Kooga spinoff brand
Seviin. Australian Rugby Union have unveiled an exciting new look for the Australian Sevens team
– a lime green playing strip worn for [.
Melbourne Victory's first half performance was the best they've ever played this season according
to Coach Mehmet Durakovic.
Blimey!
I know the standard has been poor this season but best they've ever played takes the biscuit.
A flukey penalty gave them a 1-0 lead after 40 seconds and then after the usual huff and bluff died
down at Aami Stadium the Gold Coast started to turn the screw.
Looks like Australia will get a third spot in AFC Champions League in 2012. This will be based on
the team which came third in 2011.
And there in lies the beauty of the Aussie system.
Who knows who really came third?
Some say Gold Coast United - some say Adelaide United.
Thanks to Melbourne Victory Football Club I have two double passes to give away for the next home
game vs Gold Coast United, this Sunday the 27th of November at AAMI Park. To enter answer the
following question.... Mehmet Durakovic's favourite saying is: a) What can you do? b) Thats
football c) Short, sharp passing

It is anxious times for a Brisbane Roar fan. I mean hell, the undefeated streak stretches to 34
games. But it's hard not to notice that the last two games have presented a new challenge. It's
hard not to notice that we have not scored from open play in the last two games.
In week one, Central Coast tried to handle us the way they almost did last season, with their
half-open, counter attacking game, but once again, came up short.
Check out the video and you'll know how to stop the Roar!
If you watched the recent Wellington Roar game you'll have seen Ivan Franjic played in time and
time again a la the above video training drill. Four men in the box, the ball played back or across
to a Roar player.
In the drill there were only defenders - against Wellington and Victory there were 7 or 8!
In the A-League we love to sign foreign players - often has beens from the lower teams or divisions
of Europe or Brazil.
Are the Aussie's really any worse?
After seven years we have our proof.
Here's five, still running around that we really don't need anymore, if we ever did - and I bet
they get more coin than the local player they replace.
If you've watched Sydney FC in the last two seasons under Vitaslav - it has been boring. I love
football - but it was dire!
So boring the fans deserted in droves, even after they clung on to win the Premiership in
2009/10.
Is this year Lavicka's last chance?
I still get the twitches when I think Sydney are playing.
At first the crowd looked disappointing. But that seems to be the problem with people turning up at
game time to buy a ticket. By the time Eric had headed the ball into the back of the net there was
a good covering of people across the ground, and they were in full song.
The first 14 minutes were even, then after the goal the ball raced from end to end.
FFA came under a lot of fire over the last couple of years as they put all their attention and
resources into the World Cup Bid, at the expense of a still fragile national league sitting in an
over-subscribed professional sporting arena.
Now it seems things are improving.
We had the season changes, and like the AFL and NRL, some key planning has gone into making noise
at the right times.
Building the game is not about quality. It is about capturing the imagination of the live sport
watching public. The crowd chooses the marquee game, not FFA, or Fox.
FFA was surprised in season one about the rivalry that Brisbane people felt about Sydney FC. The
opener and one of the best crowds for the new league was 20,000 against the doomed Auckland
Knights.
After parting ways with Gold Coast United in the preseason, American forward Alex Smith has signed
with Wellington Phoenix of Australia's A-league.
Top group:Favourite - Adelaide - amazing recruitment
Victory (Kewell factor?)Roar
Bottom group:Perth, Wellington, Heart, Newcastle (great start guys:) )
Question marks:Sydney (will Emmo make the difference), CCM (will their Roar style no marquee
approach pay dividends?), Gold Coast (will their Dutchmen payoff?
Two Canberrans Josip Simunic (Dinamo Zagreb) and Steven Lustica (Hadjuk Split) took to the European
football stage on the weekend. First v Second - massive crowd, massive atmosphere.
Interesting Lustica was rejected by Gold Coast United at the end of last season. He's now played
against Barcelona, started 3 league games for Hadjuk, including this top of the table clash.
My issue is with you and your grandiose statements to the press 3 years ago and ever since. I
jumped on board largely on the back of what you said in the media 3 years ago. Your vision for the
A-League and Football on the Gold Coast, here are some quotes from the news back then by yourself
and CEO Mensink.
Are Gold Coast junior soccer players better than, and more in number than the thousands in Canberra
and the surrounding region.
Well, no and no, is the answer.
But the current Gold Coast United A-League franchise, despite only pulling a couple of thousand
people per game, and losing almost half their squad this year, still have a pathway and youth model
any young player or parent of a young player in Canberra, would die for.
Australian midfielder Steven Lustica made his debut in the second half and Balakov said
he made the biggest impact of the substitutes.
Canberra's Steven Lustica came on for Hadjuk Split against the Messi-less Barcelona in front of
35,000 in Split.
Lustica could hardly get a game under Miron Bleiberg - too small and physically lacking or some
such label from the Gold Coast manager.
This excellent Daley goal vs Grenada sealed a 4-0 win for Jamaica in their Gold Cup tournament
opener on 6th June 2011. Daley's goal v Grenada was the last goal of the game and was an excellent
long range volley from the just released Bradford City winger. The other goals vs Grenada were
scored by [.

The Socceroos young guns stepped up to defeat NZ 3-0 yesterday. Despite the usual whingeing from
many fans about the play there was plenty for me to like about Holger's team performance.
Particularly the crisp passing and pacy interchange in the final third. We don't often get to see
it in the Green and Gold - and Josh K was on the field too, who would have thought!
I suspect the main reason is I have to develop my "tribal" following of a Football Franchise placed
on the Gold Coast by a Billionaire without any organic growth. I had to get into it straight away
with a bunch of people I had never met. These people are great and I will gladly go to the games
with them, but there is definitely something missing in my Football experience here on the Gold
Coast.
When the A-League season begins this fall and Alex Smith takes the field for Gold Coast United, it
will mark the rebirth of his career that has seen more than its share of peaks and valleys.
After finishing fourth last season in the A-League, Australia's top league, Gold Coast United are
on the verge of adding American forward Alex Smith.
The last time I wrote about the A-League or the Brisbane Roar was April last year. The short of
what I had to say then was, "the Brisbane Roar cannot repeat its original seduction of this
consumer. This time they're going to have to realise a product that is worth it for me to seek
out."
They have done it.
The FFA have hit pay dirt with a Suncorp Sunday afternoon final.
The pricing decision was tough and yet easy. It was probably the only choice.
While the FFA would have wanted to reward loyal fans, their financial position and that of clubs
across the league meant pricing to produce the maximum total dollars.
The post-season Play-Offs have got under way in Australia and for Minor Premiers Brisbane Roar
the Grand Final is just 90 minutes away after enjoying a first leg win over Central Coast Mariners.
In the straight knock-out phase, played between teams finishing from third to sixth in the regular
season standings, Adelaide United and Gold Coast United saw off the challenges of Wellington
Phoenix and Melbourne Victory respectively.
Gold Coast United won the A-League Youth title for a second time in a row on the weekend, with two
Canberrans Andrew Baresic and Stephen Lustica securing the victory over the AIS.
And if you were wondering how to get your club to win a Youth Title the answer is simple.
Sign a Canberran.
1. Rini Coolen's steal of the year. Iain Ramsay is given game time and wins games creates goals.
Nice one only ruined by the ending.
2. Ange Postecoglou - turns a team of good players into a passing, moving, dream machine.
3. Ange - so good I mentioned it twice.
4. Graham Arnold - for turning the Mckinna dour Kilmarnock inspired Mariners into the Magnificent
Mariners - the West Ham of Aussie football.
Both young guys are from Canberra football - both have played many many times for the Australian
under 17 and now Under 20 teams both had to travel thousands of miles to learn their trade at a
very young age.
Bushie probably had the steal on Stephen Lustica in the early years - getting more game time in
more Rep teams at a younger age, but Lustica made his mark loud enough, soon enough, running out
time and time again for the U20s.
Brisbane Roar are Hyundai A-League premiers
The Hyundai A-League, Australia's top flight football league, has concluded its regular season
this weekend. The destiny of the Minor Premiership has been in the hands of Brisbane Roar for a few
weeks already as they walked away with the regular season title by eight points from Central Coast
Mariners.
Brisbane played their best football so far. ran rings around a slow Gold Coast. You know a team is
in trouble when they are 1-0 in 2 minutes and their centre backs start arguing within 10 minutes.
The referee should have given more protection to Brisbane's skills.
Pity Miron went thuggish.
