The biggest match on the schedule is the penultimate contest of the weekend at Yankee Stadium, where the New York Red Bulls and New York City FC partake in this season's second edition of the New York derby on Sunday.

MLS tiebreaker procedures

The race for the Supporter's Shield and for a playoff spot is coming down to the final two match days of the season. With several teams tied on points, it is helpful to know Major League Soccer's tiebreaker rules.

"When two or more teams are tied in the standings on points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss), the following tiebreakers will be used in the sequence below, until one team ranks ahead of the other(s):

MLS Changes Tiebreakers (Again)

This seems to be an annual thing now days in Major League Soccer.

MLS has changed the top tiebreaker for the end of the 2013 regular season to most wins, according to the latest media guide. This was spotted by Seattle Times' writer Josh Mayers.

The order to break ties goes as follows.

CCL: Result for Seattle, Gomez scores

The big news for Seattle in CONCACAF Champions League play on Wednesday was Marcus Hahnemann getting his first game in goal. Otherwise, it was business as usual in Group 4 with the Sounders beating Marathon 3-1 at CenturyLink Field. Seattle takes 12 points from their four group stage games with a +7 goal differential.

Crew win 3-nil after goals by Higuain, Meram and Ola Kamara

In their past three road games, the Seattle Sounders lost all three with a -9 goal differential. Wednesday's loss was partially due to call-ups, injuries and a lineup gamble that failed. Columbus Crew SC exploited the spaces where Jordy Delem and Oniel Fisher played in scoring their first two goals, and then coasted to a 3-nil win.

When the Seattle Sounders FC take on dominant Club America they will do so with their best CCL squad ever.

When Sigi Schmid last took the Seattle Sounders to the CONCACAF Champions League Knockout Rounds he did so with a squad that featured several rotational players rather than starters. They went 1-1-2 with a zero goal differential (4 for, 4 against), beating UANL Tigres and getting edged by Santos Laguna.

Seeding is the primary concern of the Sounders in Wednesday night's match. After yesterday's results any spot between seventh (with a loss) and a chance at first with an 11 goal differential win. It is most likely that a win would get Seattle Sounders FC the third spot as Monterrey and Santos Laguna are dominating.

The Portland Timbers may no longer be perfect in 2017, but the side are still 2-0 with a plus six goal differential at Providence Park and they will look to keep that stellar home record going against the visiting New England Revolution in this weekend's Sunday night match.

The chances of preserving that record will be given a boost by the return of Darlington Nagbe and David Guzman from international duty.

Back the future: Union repeat inaugural ways

This data doesn't lie. The Union are at the exact same point as they were in their inaugural season.

Maybe the 5-1 drubbing against the LA Galaxy wasn't quite as bad as the score seemed to indicate. But the loss brought the Philadelphia Union to a league worst -11 goal differential, and they are also the only team in MLS with less points than games played.

Yet Another Loss In Seattle

In a reversal from the LA home game our defense actually played well but our offense went missing. A 10 second mental lapse from Marc Burch let Dempsey get free on a corner and that's all he needed to score the only goal of the game. Meanwhile at the other end of the field the Rapids managed just two shots on goal, neither one of which was particularly dangerous.

10 games, 1 point, 7 goals, -18 goal differential. That's the Rapids all-time record in my hometown where they'll be playing tomorrow. This is not good. We found out this week that Jared Watts will join Drew Moor and Shane O'Neill on the not available list, which has left Pablo trying Burch and Piermayr at CB and Serna at RB.

Curse of the coin-flip?
After a bad weekend the Rapids are forced to play the wild-card game on the road in their worst location, Seattle. Just to remind everyone, in eight competitive games in Seattle all-time we've lost seven and drawn once (earlier this year) with a -13 goal differential. The good news is since that coin flip above the Sounders have lost 4 and drawn 1 while being outscored 13-3.

D.C. United Player of the Month for June 2013

June was, without a doubt - and as sad as it may be - D.C. United's most successful month so far in 2013. Not having a losing record (3W-1D-3L in all competitions) and securing a positive goal differential (8 GF, 7 GA, +1) were enough to secure that dubious distinction, even if two of the three wins and 75% of the goals were outside of league competition.

They've struggled to score and they're not very good defensively.

Zero Sum Games: Some Pictures of Shot and Goal Differentials in the Premier League This Season

Football's a simple game. If you score more or concede less than the other side, you win the match. So I thought it would be worth taking a look at which teams have been doing better than their opponents. The simplest way of doing just that is to calculate differentials for the stuff that matters most - goals - and the stuff without which - shots - the stuff that matters most usually doesn't happen.

Leverage in the EPL: Who's Made Good Use Of It This Season? (You Might Be Surprised)

A couple of days ago, I wrote about the positive leverage teams generate when they are up by a goal or the lousy leverage they have when they are down by one. I defined the leverage that puts one team in control of the match or creates pressure on another team statistically as "the likelihood of winning, given the score and the time remaining in the game.

Talk about going down to the wire. A last second PK (maybe soft, but legit) puts Greece through and eliminates the Ivory Coast. They really had no business being in a position where 1 goal could eliminate them, they're a better team than that.
