Ok folks, it's time for another Fireside Chat. This one comes with an extra helping of questions to boot. I took a few minutes of time out of the day of Dan Ferris over at Once A Metro. The Red Bulls have had some interesting news the past couple of days themselves. GM Erik Soler was suddenly removed from his position just a couple of days ago.
The Erik Soler era is over for the New York Red Bulls, and the new regime at the club has a distinct French flavor.
The Red Bulls have announced the appointment of former AS Monaco club president Jerome De Bontin (pictured) as the team's new general manager. Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier, who was appointed head of global soccer for Red Bull in July, will oversee all sporting aspects of the team.
Just when you thought the Luke Rodgers saga was over, it has clearly only begun. Norwegian
publication Aftenposten reports that the diminutive English striker has signed on with Tippeligaen
side Lillestrom SK through the 2012 season.
Seattle Sounders Alliance members are just a few days away from putting democracy in sport into action when voting opens whether to retain general manager Adrian Hanauer.
Yes, Sounders fans have major stake in the fate of Hanauer, who is less focused on stumping for fan support than on seeing the team earn a higher seed in the MLS playoffs.
As the pursuit of Christian Tiffert continues on, the Seattle Sounders have another, potentially
bigger, transfer on their minds: Espanyol's Joan Verdu. With several Spanish outlets already
reporting they are "very interested," Sounders GM Adrian Hanauer confirmed that the 29-year-old is
a player they have been tracking for some time.

One of the most talked about things surrounding the Seattle Sounders as an expansion team was the notion that every few years their fans would be able to vote on their General Manager's position.
On the heels of what could reasonably be called a breakout performance in the Olympics, interest
has rightfully grown in presumed future Seattle Sounders midfielder Mario Martinez. I say
"presumed" because some reports out of Honduras have surfaced that suggest Martinez has been
weighing other options and that his deal with the Sounders is not entirely finalized.
Adrian Hanauer made one point crystal clear when discussing the series of events that resulted
in the Seattle Sounders trading Alvaro Fernandez and signing Christian Tiffert: That wasn't exactly
how they wanted it to play out.
If the transfer window had gone according to plan, the Sounders GM said he would have figured
out a way to keep Fernandez under the team's control, while also adding their new German
playmaker.
Ever since the Seattle Sounders started talking about being open to adding a Designated Player
during this transfer window, speculation ran rampant about who might be moved in order to make
room. If a report out of Colombia is to be believed, it appears that player is Alvaro Fernandez.
The reports, which remain unconfirmed by official sources, suggest Fernandez would go to Colombia's
Deportivo Cali on a one-year loan.
The Portland Timbers have fired head coach John Spencer, owner Merritt Paulson announced during
a Monday press conference. Current GM Gavin Wilkinson will take over the head coaching duties, but
Paulson made it clear that it would be in the interim only. Paulson said a permanent replacement
will likely be announced during the offseason and that the team has identified 10 possible
candidates so far.
If the Seattle Sounders are to become the first team to win four straight U.S. Open Cups, there
is a decent chance they'll need to do it on the road.
That doesn't sit well with GM Adrian Hanauer, who expressed a fair amount of frustration over
the fact that the Sounders apparently lost a coin-flip to Sporting Kansas City because their blind
bids were determined to be identical by the U.
Sporting KC is 180 minutes away from a trophy, their first since 2004. Should they get by
Philadelphia on Wednesday the 11th and be 90 minutes away, those 90 minutes, potential extra time,
and penalty kicks, will take place in Kansas City. Today, US Soccer announced the potential
finalist hosts for the US Open Cup final.
The seven-game winless run has not gone unnoticed by Seattle Sounders leadership. I had a chance
to catch up with Sounders GM Adrian Hanauer earlier this week and he made it very clear that
something is going to have to change. That might be the Sounders simply playing better, but he's
clearly not ready to just sit on his hands and hope that happens.
There's a tendency with home team highlights to overfeature their own team's success. Even in a
five-nil win, some could claim that the Seattle Sounders highlight package ignores some of the
great play of Cal FC. But that would assume that Cal FC produced highlights. When a team only
completes one pass inside the opposition's 18 and only takes four shots on the game what should be
featured?
This week's show is a little different than any of our past shows (well, they are all little
unique snowflakes, but you get our larger point hopefully). Instead of a soccer-centric guest, we
invited Warren Etheredge (@thewarrenreport) onto the show. You may remember Warren as the
"annoying" guy who interviewed Seattle Sounders GM Adrian Hanauer on his show "The High Bar.
While he couldn't get into specifics, Hanauer revealed that clubs from abroad have made formal
bids and inquiries for Montero and Fernandez. As a result, Seattle has been in touch with players
from around the world in the scenario that the team decides to let either player go. Hanauer stated
that if a substantial bid came in, he would be open to selling either player during the regular
season.
Darren Sawatzky first got involved in a coaching role in youth development back in 1991 while he
was a player at the University of Portland. At this point he's layering duties as coach and GM for
the Sounders U23 team onto his roles as Seattle Sounders Academy Technical Director and Washington
Youth Soccer ODP Director.
Their Words "He's not only played in MLS and is familiar with the league, but he's also been very
successful in MLS. We believe he'll be a valuable player for us." New England GM Michael Burns.
Other Sources Trash-talking Herculez haunts TFC - from the Toronto Sun's Kurtis Larson: He backed
it up. Sporting's Bunbury tears knee ligaments, will miss rest of season - from the Kansas City
Star's Tod Palmer: "I talked to him.
The New York Red Bulls announced on Friday that defender Babajide Ogunbiyi will not be joining the
club. "During our standard, thorough physical, our medical team noticed an issue regarding Jide's
health," Red Bulls GM Erik Soler said in a press statement. "Over the past few weeks, Jide has
consulted extensively with our doctors as well as other practitioners.
Before we head to the results, let's start with another round of designated player excitement. Late
Friday, Columbus announced that Federico Higuain had signed. In a press statement Columbus
president and GM Mark McCullers thanked both Crew and MLS staff "for their expertise and diligence
in seeing this complicated and lengthy negotiation to fruition.
In the second major trade on Friday in Major League Soccer, Sebastien Le Toux is now a member of
the New York Red Bulls joining the club from Seattle. Going the other way is Dane Richards.
"Sebastien is one of the premier attacking players in the League and someone who we have admired
for a long time," New York GM Erik Soler said in a press statement.
I traveled to Austin, TX, last week, as NFL invited me to speak on a panel to their digital
teams about how we're using social media at MLS. I was excited and humbled to have been invited;
the NFL is one of the organizations I'm constantly looking to for ideas and inspiration (did you
see the social media command center for Superbowl?
Huge news coming out of MLS HQ today, just days before the kick off of the 2012 season.
As we all know, in the past, MLS has not had the best reputation with regards to refereeing. In
fact, some would call it downright abysmal. I'm one of those people. More so than anything else in
the sport, I hate losing due to a shitty referee call.
Coming to Old Trafford from 2014, a symbol of the successful US car bailout
Man Utd's US connections payoff again. The commercial behemoths of the Premier League have
Chevrolet lined up to take over their jersey sponsorship from 2014 replacing AON for the next seven
years. Financial details of the deal are sketchy and it appears to have cost Joel Ewanick, GM's
global chief marketing officer his job.
US carmaker Chevrolet has signed a four-year deal with Liverpool to become the football club's car
sponsor.
The firm, owned by GM, signed a similar deal with Premier League rivals Manchester United in
May.
The LFC partnership runs to the end of the 2015/16 Barclays Premier League and European campaigns.
The Portland Timbers made a lot of line-up changes but the result stayed the same. Portland
almost struck first but in the end they gave up the first goal, then a second in the first half.
The second half proved just as disastrous as the team gave up after giving up the third 3 minutes
into the second half.
Pretty much everyone in this country would agree the system is broken.
And pretty much everyone is WRONG!
Wrong about precisely what it is that's broken. You see, everyone just parrots the reasons the
status quo protectors sell them. But the real problem is the status quo
protectors themselves.
If you are a fan of college football you may have seen this story this morning, in one form or another, the one in which Mac Brown complains about The Longhorn Network. (Don't get excited UT fans, I'm not piling on) I wanted to mention it cause it stuck a topic we deal with here are 3rd Degree. You see every single coach, PR guy, GM, and TD who has every worked for FC Dallas has at one time or another complained to us here at 3rd Degree that we are giving too much information to opposition.
With MLSSoccer.com reporting that the New England Revolution are planning on taking Juan Toja
with their first pick in the current allocation order and that they are entertaining offers for the
services of the Colombian play-maker, there has been talk around the Internet that the Timbers
should make a play of their own.
On the way out of the main stand of Starfire tonight I caught a glimpse of Sounders Women GM Amy
Carnell, and she looked delighted. It's easy to understand why. Though we never got official
attendance numbers, the stadium was clearly at capacity, with the stands on both sides of the field
full and more people spilling onto the surrounding grassy hills or watching from behind fences.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Sean Payton for the 2012 season due to a bounty system
that paid players to injure opponents. However, the head coach of the New Orleans Saints has
decided to appeal the suspension. While the appeal is being listened to, Payton will remain head
coach.
