We have seen in Part I how the term 'Man U', considered objectionable by many supporters today,
was created entirely uncontroversially by newspapers at least sixty years ago, as an easy printed
abbreviation for Manchester United. Used initially almost exclusively for fixtures, results and
league tables, it only later became part of grassroots speech a little later.
Non-league football is often marketed as a low cost alternative to the Premier League but,
as Paul Eke writes, that might not always be as accurate as we might think.
Anyone who read my recent TwoHundredPerCent paean to Redheugh Park will have realised that
Gateshead Football Club is something close to my heart.
It's that time of the week you've all been waiting for -
Diary of an MLS Convert is back,
and the converts have, as usual, got plenty to say this week. Topics covered by supporters of
Eastern teams include the need for MLS highlights show, analysing the impact and worth of a DP, a
brand new MLS Convert, maternity leave making MLS viewing more regular and hailing an Englishman's
goalscoring exploits.
The tough part about being a glory hunter is the occasional opprobrium that comes with it. Maybe
you don't remember the name of 'your' club's all time goalscorer, or know what the most recent
(adopted this very year!) fashion on the terraces is. Maybe you don't even know the name of the
club's anthem, or even where the club plays its home games.
