Pulling back the curtain on player acquisitions

Sounder at Heart - Soccer From the Heart of the Sound 02 March @ 04:56 PM EDT

One of the more notable additions to Major League Soccer this offseason was undoubtedly the signing of teen-standout Luis Gil.

What should have been seen as a coup for MLS -- and Real Salt Lake which ultimately ended up with his services --was instead viewed by many detractors as yet another example of the league's insistence on rigging the rules however it sees fit.

Luis Gil to Real Salt Lake

Project 2010 23 February @ 06:20 PM EDT

The Deseret News is reporting that US U-17 starlet Luis Gil has been traded from Kansas City to Real Salt Lake today in exchange for a 2011 second round draft pick, an international roster spot and a portion of future transfer fees if Gil is sold to an foreign club.

That didn't take long. Everyone figured that he wouldn't stay with the Wizards, but I think most people were betting on Seattle and the two LA clubs to win his services.

More Roster Movement for KC

Down the Byline 22 February @ 10:23 PM EDT
Along with the acquisition of Luis Gil today, KC has made more roster moves. Two trialists are gone from camp, and two rostered players are also gone as there are less and less players from the 2009 Wizards. First, Kurt Morsink and Kevin Souter are gone from the Wizards. Neither one is much of a surprise as both appeared to be on their way out as KC brought in more players, specifically Souter who takes up an international spot that the Wizards appear to be using fully this season. Under-17s, Luis Gil and the Maturity Quagmire

Soccer Soap Box 06 November @ 09:27 AM EDT

The US Under-17s are out of the Fifa U-17 World Cup after a tough loss to Italy. I saw less of their World Cup play than I wanted, but a few thoughts remain hard to shake.

Maturity is over-rated at least in soccer. The game against the UAE reminded me most why watching the occasional youth game is so refreshing: even in a pressure situation the 'kids' tend to play with an offense-first mindset and a penchant for flair that will very likely (and sadly) be taught out of them in the pro ranks.
