Both Arsenal and Everton went into this game in good form and both fighting for a top four finish. Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott, Per Mertesacker and Wojciech Sczcesny all came into the starting line up, while Arsene Wenger sprang a surprise by starting Jack Wilshere again.
Arsenal started a bit nervously, and Everton nearly got an early goal through Pienaar, but he put it over the bar.
For a quarter of an hour on Boxing Day, it seemed like Sir Alex Ferguson had taken the term
'Christmas surprise' too literally. By the time that we eventually figured United were playing with
9 men + Evans + Gibson, Evra had already skipped around a static Wigan defence for Park to score
his first goal in the Premier League since those days when he only scored against Arsenal,
Liverpool, Chelsea etc.

As displayed by their manful draw against Manchester City at the weekend, Everton are a team full of robust and powerful battlersexemplified by the likes of Phil Neville and Marouane Fellaini. They are not quite as renowned for exquisite skill that would back leave the Nou Camp salivating with gushing praise.
Well that is not what Manchester United fans expected. After the excitement of signing Robin van
Persie, United went out and were second best to an Everton side that won every 50-50 challenge all
over the pitch.
United had no answer to Marouane Fellaini all night, am it was Fellaini who was finally
rewarded for an outstanding display with the winning goal in the 57th minute.
Everton cruised into into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday, after a comfortable
victory over Championship side Blackpool.
The Toffees got off to the best possible start when Royston Drenthe curled home a fine effort
after just 49 seconds of play and only five minutes later the home side were two up, courtesy of
Denis Stracqualursi.
Saturday is going to be a hard game, it always is at Goodison. Everton boosted by the signings of
Donovan, Gibson and possibly Jelavic making his debut will be up for this one after we beat them
earlier in the season at Stamford Bridge.
The big questions will be over AVB's team selection.
Gibson. Ad approfittarne è lo United di Sir Alex Ferguson.
As hinted at in last night's post it felt like a good night to be a blue from the word go.
City always seem to fall foul of Everton's superior workrate and commitment. Players like Aguero,
Villa and Nasri have added real class to go along with the brawn but where is the steel that side
will need to win a title?
Whereas I'm pretty sure it would have still gone in on the other side of Joe Hart's goal, Darron
Gibson's heavily deflected winner against Man City last night saw his old club Manchester United go
level on points with their rivals at the summit of the Premier League pretty much making his goal
last night the best thing he ever did for United, indeed they were chanting his name 30 miles away
at Old Trafford when the news broke.
Aston Villa 1-1 Everton Premier League 14th January 2012
Alex McLeish's Villa side once again struggled in front of their home fans, drawing with Everton
to make it just three wins out of 10 home league fixtures for the Villans.
Despite Manchester United's lack of depth in central midfield, Darron "with an 'o' " Gibson has
been shipped off to Everton, for a reported fee of £1million. The Irishman's four and a half year
deal with the Toffees comes after not long after the Republic of Ireland midfielder was fined by
Sir Alex Ferguson, after a Boxing Day night out with team-mates Wayne Rooney and Jonny Evans had
left the players unfit for training for the following morning.
1. How do you make hard work out of beating Wigan? Change your team around and play everyone out
of position. I was looking forward to a late Christmas present in the form of United blowing Wigan
out of the water, like usual, then the manager had to go and spoil it all. Carrick, our best player
of recent weeks, shifted in to defence.
Following Manchester United's Carling Cup exit against Crystal Palace last night, OTP looks at five
players on display night who are treading a tightrope if they want to continue their careers at Old
Trafford. 1. Darron Gibson It looked like Fergie was going to ship Gibson out on the regular
Manchester-Sunderland service during the summer.
Former Minnesota Stars player Geison (Maura) and Thunder players Leo Gibson and Stephen DeRoux were
honored this week from the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). The Brazilian Geison, who played on
last years 2011 Stars team but was released after the season, was honored as Most Valuable Player
of the league.
Another year end award for the Missouri Comets. For the second year in a row, the Missouri Comets
have the MISL MVP after Byron Alvarez won the award last year. Geison becomes the second player for
the Comets to win both the scoring title and be named MVP. Geison finished the season with 90
points, including 38 goals to win the scoring title.
Three Missouri Comets players were named to the all league team today. The same 3 players are up
for other awards later this week. Geison, Danny Waltman, and Leo Gibson were all named to the all
league team. Geison was named to the first team, while Waltman and Gibson were named to the second
team.
The Missouri Comets closed out the regular season today against the Milwaukee Wave at the
Independence Events Center. After the events of Friday where the two teams ended the game in a
shoving match, everything was lined up for an extremely physical game. That did not disappoint
either, as the two teams combined for 13 blue cards today.
Two days after the Comets fought back to defeat the Wichita Wings in a close game at the
Independence Events Center, the Comets found themselves having to do it again against the Wings,
this time in Wichita. Unfortunately the result wasn't the same as the Wings pulled off a 12-10 win
over the Comets to get their first win in the series.
The score was a lot closer than the scoreline appeared, but the Comets saw their 4 game winning
streak snapped last night in Baltimore as the Comets fell to the Blast 17-9. Playing without
captain Byron Alvarez and defender Bryan Harris, the task was already a big ask for the Comets.
Some defensive mistakes once again cost the Comets early as Shaun David capitalized on a poor back
pass to Danny Waltman a little over a minute into the game.
For nearly 57 minutes in last night's match it seemed to be a foregone conclusion that the
Baltimore Blast would go on to win their sixth consecutive game and their first at home this
season. Fortunately for the Missouri Comets, there was just enough time left in the game to pull
out two late three point goals in the final minutes to complete an unbelievable 12-10 win on the
road.
Wayne Rooney was a notable absence from Man United's shock 3-2 loss with Blackburn Rovers on
Saturday and despite Ferguson stating that he was struggling with an injury, rumours have been
circulated that the player was axed following allegations that he, Johnny Evans and Darron Gibson
went out following the 5-0 win against Wigan on boxing day.
Seamus Coleman is one of a number of young Irish internationals focused on making the
Ireland squad for the Euro 2012 finals in Poland next summer, but all must convince Ireland boss
Giovanni Trapattoni to include them on the European adventure.
The Everton defender is one of a number of players fighting to make Trap's final 23 man squad for
the Group C games against Croatia, Spain and Italy.
RICHMOND, VA – Matthew Delicate became Richmond's all-time leading scorer with a stoppage time
penalty kick as the Kickers secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory over the Dayton Dutch Lions.
Entering the match as a 65th minute substitute, Delicate had a number of close calls before scoring
his 64th goal in a Richmond uniform.
Fredericksburg Hotspur hold on for season-opening win
By Tom Leiss
FAIRFAX, Va.—The Fredericksburg Hotspur opened their 2012 Premier Development League season with
a 3-2 win against the Northern Virginia Royals on Sunday at Fairfax High School.
Fredericksburg (1-0) jumped on top early with a goal in the fourth minute and built its advantage
to 3-0 by the 51st minute, before having to fight to hang on for the victory in the closing
minutes.
As well as sharing eyebrows, both Gibson and Liam also share the fabled 'look of the Irish' an
face once defined by Dylan Moran as "people who look like they're trying (and failing) to hide
other people inside them."
Tonight marks the start of the 2012 season for the Philadelphia Union as they face the Portland
Timbers as part of MLS First Kick. In advance of the game, the Brotherly Game spoke with Geoff
Gibson of Stumptown Footy, SB Nation's Timbers blog, to preview the game between Philadelphia and
Portland.
With about half an hour left to go in last night's game against Stoke, a roar came from the
Stretford End, followed by a loud chorus of "the city is yours, the city is yours, 20,000 empty
seats, are you fucking sure?"
So you guys all saw how I picked in SB Nation's mock SuperDraft. If you didn't then, well, I
chose GA cetnral defenders Andrew Jean-Baptiste for my 8th pick and then Aldo Paniagua for my 27th.
Why? Well you can read all about it right over here!
In any case, what probably isn't as well known about the mock draft is that we aren't allowed to
trade picks for anything.
With all the MLS SuperDraft chatter that this the next Taylor Twellman and
that player being the next Steve Ralston it helps me think about hopeful visions
of the future. In sports the Draft, the Minors and Academies give eternal hope that any player can
become the next big thing.
Connecticut couldn't cling to its late one-goal lead and paid the price for it as Creighton
edged the Huskies 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 match on Sunday in Storrs, Ct.
Tony Cascio broke a scoreless tie in the 82nd minute to put UConn up late, but moments later,
Giuseppe Gentile leveled it in the 85th minute, forcing the match into two overtimes.
