Berlin (AFP) – A 38-year-old German policewoman will next season become the first female referee in Europe’s top leagues after she was promoted to officiate in the Bundesliga on Friday.

Bibiana Steinhaus has previously been a fourth official for Bundesliga matches and although a German FA (DFB) referee since 1999, she knows the spotlight will be on her when she takes charge of a top-flight game.

Zurich (AFP) FIFA's ethics committee has recommended former German FA secretary general Helmut Sandrock be fined 50,000 Swiss francs (45,800 euros, $51,700) following an investigation into the awarding of the 2006 World Cup to Germany, world football's governing body said Thursday.

In a final report submitted by FIFA's investigatory chamber, the body called for Sandrock to perform "social work to be determined by the adjudicatory chamber" and to be fined for violations of FIFA's code of ethics.

The firework was one of several fired by visiting Wolfsburg fans from the away section at Hanover's HDI Arena on March 1 when the visitors romped to a 4-0 victory.
