Olympique Lyonnais vs. Evian TG FC,
Matchday 18, Ligue 1
Finally a Champions League Knockout stages draw that spelt relief for Lyon. In their 9th
consecutive appearance in the Round-of-16, they meet APOEL FC; the Cypriot side that managed to
finish ahead of Zenit St.
Despite the String of Missed Chances especially in the first half, I would say that we generally
played well last night.
Last season, when asked about who I'd like us to face in the Champions League on our way to the
final, I asked for the following teams: Olympique Lyonnais, AS Roma, Bayern Munich and Arsenal –
I would have asked for Liverpool or Juventus too if possible.
Beaten fair and square in Madrid on Tuesday (0-4), the Olympique Lyonnais faces its toughest
resilience test today. In order not to lose confidence in itself and sink into pessimism, the club
must avoid a defeat in the stadium where the Champion of France, Lille, is waiting for it. And even
if the LOSC also suffered a big setback against Inter Milan this week, this encounter is the clash
of the 11th L1 matchday.
Karim Benzema: our very own 'Mr. Champions LeagueAs I watched the UEFA officials crack open the balls to show who our Champions League
‘Groupmates' would be during this stage of the competition a few months ago, the sight of
Olympique Lyonnais' logo turning up made me groan ‘them again!
With action packed couple of weeks to come, Lyon warm up for the Champions League qualifier
against Rubin Kazan by attempting to show the Ligue 1 returnees Ajaccio who's boss. Yes, 5 matches
to play from the 13th till 27th of August, two of which shall certainly decide the course of the
team for the year.
25 or 7 ?
25% vs 7 times. That pretty much sums up the whole uncertainty around this game. Statistically,
Lyon only have a 25% chance to qualify after the draw (1-1) conceded at home, three weeks ago. But
this small percentage is opposed to the record of confrontations between the two teams, largely in
favor of OL : 7 games against Real, 0 loss.
David vs Goliath, or a Battle of Titans? Rarely has the now usual CL encounter between OL and
Real seemed more balanced, or rather less unbalanced. In the past 3 Gerland encounters, Lyon were
the obvious underdogs, Madrid and their Galacticos the archfavourite. It should have been a
whitewash, Real über alles, yet.
