Berlin (AFP) – Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Gelson Fernandes was sent off after just 33 seconds of being on the pitch during his side’s German Cup semi-final win over Schalke on Wednesday.

With his side leading 1-0, and just 12 minutes from a place in the final, Fernandes was brought on as a substitute to steady the ship, but was shown a red card for a crunching challenge on Leon Goretzka.

Spain dominated open play, totalling 63% of ball possession and 42 minutes of actual playing time compared to the Swiss team's 37% and 25 minutes, but in the end, fell to a smash-and-grab goal from ex-Manchester City player, Gelson Fernandes in the 51st minute.
No team has ever won the World Cup after losing in their opening match and as such, Spain must defy history as well as their own mental frailties to lift the trophy come July 11th.

Match Review & Highlights: Spain 0-1 Switzerland

Big surprise. Great game. That's my two sentence summary. But I'll expand on it a little below.

Spain are (or should that be were?) many people's favourites to win the whole thing. They're the reigning European Champions after all. They were also expected to beat Switzerland without too much trouble.

Spain slumped to a shocking defeat at the hands of minnows Switzerland, who produced one of the biggest World Cup shocks ever.

It was Spain's second defeat since winning Euro 2008 and the architects of 'total football' were left terribly frustrated after Switzerland delivered a resolute defensive performance.

Pogba Honour To Play For Racists

In 2009, Juventus had to play a game behind closed doors after their fans racially abused Mario Balotelli following the goal he scored against them for Inter Milan in a 1-1 draw. This wasn't the first or last occasion that this club has had issues with racism though.

Last October they were fined €10,000 for racist chanting in another game against Inter Milan and were dished out a repeat punishment in January this year after Colombian wing-back Pablo Armero and Cape Verde-born Switzerland midfielder Gelson Fernandes were the victims of racist chanting during both the first and second half in a game against Udinese.

"It's not a good omen and it's not a good sign that we have sent out to the other teams and the football world," Del Bosque said. "We have to face the next games and try to win them now. That should be our spirit because we can't drop our heads and think we were unfortunate or that we had bad luck – not when we still have the chance to put it right.

Spain vs Switzerland: Howard Webb's decisions questioned

If Spain are to win the World Cup it must do so against the discomfiting statistic that losing opening matches are always fatal to those hopes.

But even if they reach the finals they will have to contend with yet another obstacle- Howard Webb who is officiating that match. Word is that the Spanish media are none too pleased with some of his decisions in the Switzerland match.

Spain Fall to Switzerland

It wouldn't be a good World Cup without an upset or two. In the case of Spain, now is a better time to be smacked on the back of the cabeza than in the knockout phase, or even later in group competition. From the look of their play today, the Kings of Europe needed it.

Narrow attack, just short-of-adequate finishes, and a little less focus than the day called for left La Furia Roja muy furioso indeed.
