51 responses to Jeff Plush's letter to fans on the Rapids' blog as of 10am November 5. It shows
there are some passionate fans out there. Not that I ever had any doubt about that. What I do have
doubts over are the very future of this club and here's why.
I have never really understood why sports trophies are given to the owners of clubs when they win
championships.

With stars like Conor Casey and Pablo Mastroeni, the Rapids should have done better in 2009.
(Getty Images)
Consistent play was always an issue in 2008 for the Colorado Rapids, and it turned out 2009
wasn't much different. The Rapids looked like a team that could contend in early on in 2009 but the
ladder part of the season tore this group apart as injuries were racked up and the offensive
production that was one of the best in the league at times turned into a pumpkin.

When it comes to conversations about the most dysfunctional clubs in Major League Soccer, the
New York Red Bulls often tend to dominate the conversations, but one club that needs to start being
discussed is the Colorado Rapids.

"We need better players," said Smith. "What was very clear tonight was that some of the guys in
that changing room are not good enough."

This is my favorite time of the year to blog. Not because it's playoff time, but rather because the
regular season is over and I can get into the business of comparing this year's teams historically.
I'll have plenty of material in the coming weeks, so check back often.
However, there's still two more games to play today.

What is there to say? Destiny in their hands, playoff berth on the line, players playing against
their old clubs on both sides, arch rivals, Rocky Mountain Cup. What more do you need? The only
thing I am certain of is that CBS4 Denver will not be bothering to cover any of this game but will
instead be focusing on Brandon Marshall's inane comments in a bye week.

The only good thing about the weekend shakeout is that the Rapids still hold their playoff destiny
in their hands. The problem is, they have been doing that for many weeks now and they still need a
win in their final game on the road against arch rivals Salt Lake to achieve it.
Gary
Smith said a few weeks ago, from memory after the home tie against San Jose, that God
forbid it would come down to another end of season climax with Salt Lake.

Major League Soccer lost one of its most respected assistant coaches to Europe this past weekend
with Paul Mariner's departure from the New England Revolution to join English side Plymouth. As
tough as that departure is on the Revs, it is also a big blow for MLS, which is facing an
off-season where several head coaching jobs are expected to open up.

Even if Real Salt Lake win in Toronto (unlikely, but you never know), the
Colorado
Rapids can still clinch a playoff position tonight with a win in Dallas if New England
fail to win their game. The beauty is that
Gary Smith will know the results of
both the Salt Lake and New England games before the kickoff tonight against FC Dallas.

It may have been a quiet week for the Rapids but all the noise from the other MLS games has left
their task very clear. A win in Dallas and they could be in the playoffs. Such a scenario will take
place for sure if the Rapids win in Texas and Real Salt Lake fail to beat New York tomorrow night,
something they haven't done in the past 10 games against the Red Bulls apparently.

Dallas' game with San Jose on Wednesday could help decide the Rapids' playoff hopes. If the
streaking Hoops conjure up another win against the also improving San Jose Earthquakes, they will
still be in the playoff hunt. If they lose, they will be eliminated from the postseason, presumably
making Colorado's trip to Texas October 17 a little easier for the Burgundy and Blue.

Some crackers from
Gary Smith in true English footballing terminology ahead of
this weekend's huge game against New England. These quotes are taken from a letter he addressed to
players with the Colorado Fusion soccer club which signed an agreement this week to be part of an
adidas alliance with the Rapids.

I have to declare an interest here. I wasn't able to see this game. All I have are the postmatch
comments of both the team and friends who called me after the game to fill me in.
What I can say is that a point in Kansas is a very valuable one at this stage of the season. I know
the Rapids are not picking up three points on anything like a consistent basis but we cannot
underestimate the injuries that have befallen them.

Random notes from the Colorado Rapids' third draw in nine days, a 0-0 tie with the Kansas City
Wizards on Saturday night at Community America Ballpark:
SIZE MATTERS: The official dimensions of the pitch at Dick's Sporting Goods
Park are 120 yards long by 80 yards wide. In contrast, the fields surrounding Dick's are 110 by
70.

The Colorado Rapids travel to Kansas City to face the Wizards at 6:30 p.m. (MT) on Saturday night
at Community/America Ballpark. Following their second consecutive 1-1 tie with the San Jose
Earthquakes, the Rapids are looking to hold on to a shot at the playoffs. With a potential 12
points to gain in the final four games, Colorado head coach
Gary Smith feels his
team needs a minimum of four.

Quotes from last night's 1-1 tie with San Jose Earthquakes:Pablo Mastroeni:"It would have been nice to get three points, obviously. We can't sit and sulk and feel sorry for
ourselves. We just have to show up and be the team we are capable of."
Conor Casey:"It was a good point given the circumstances but it was a terrible game from us.

Conor Casey stood up tall again tonight as he netted an injury time penalty to
allow the
Colorado Rapids to pick up another point. A 67th minute penalty from
Chris Wondolowski gave the San Jose Earthquakes the lead before Casey's late penalty.
The Rapids could simply not break down a stubborn San Jose defense for most of the game and failed
to create many chances on the night.

Same opponents, different day. The
Colorado Rapids face another vital game tonight
against the San Jose Earthquakes, a team they played in California only this past Friday, somehow
escaping with a crucial point thanks to Conor Casey's 95th minute penalty.
That vital point after such a tough game will no doubt boost the Rapids as they seek to secure
three points against the basement team in the Western Conference and reach the long-discussed 40
point watershed.

MLS commisioner Don Garber seeks a balanced schedule
Last week's press release announcing that MLS will take a two week break during the World Cup
Finals group stage has stirred some debate from supporters of the league. However, hidden at the
end of that same press release is news that all MLS fans must be pleased to read.

In the MLS ESPN2 Game of the Week last Friday, the Colorado Rapids and San Jose Earthquakes drew to
a 1-1 tie in San Jose. The same two teams square off on Wednesday, once again in prime time but
this time they play in Commerce City, Colo.
Conor Casey (right) will be looking to
add to his league-leading 14 goals.

Well, that was pretty scrappy and crappy. But the Rapids escaped with a point.
Conor
Casey continued his amazing run of goalscoring with a penalty kick in almost the fifth
minute of injury time to get the equalizer after San Jose had scored one of the softer goals the
Rapids have conceded this season in the 8th minute.

Imagine the array of emotions for Ryan Johnson on Friday night. The San Jose Earthquakes striker
scored his team's only goal in the eighth minute of a 1-1 tie against the Colorado Rapids. Then the
24-year-old committed the foul deep into extra time that produced a penalty kick for Colorado and
the Rapids' only goal.

Nick Thomas of WeWantRapidman and yours truly were guests on a podcast by Robert Jonas of Center
Line Soccer as the Bay Area Web site previewed the two upcoming games between the San Jose
Earthquakes and the Colorado Rapids.
Nick focused very precisely about the Rapids' current manpower situation, we both talked a bit
about Coach Gary Smith's influence on the team since taking over a year ago.

The
Colorado Rapids traveled to California yesterday to prepare for tonight's game
against San Jose before, bizarrely, playing the same team again next Wednesday at DSG Park. What an
important game tonight's game is. After losing at Toronto to record their fourth straight away
defeat, the Rapids know that a point tonight against a struggling team will be the least they can
come away with before, hopefully, picking up three points at home next week.

Gary Smith and the
Colorado Rapids coaching staff don't look to
have been able to snatch an extra player to add to their decimated ranks in time to beat the
September 15th transfer deadline. It did seem a little bit of a stretch for the team to be able to
secure a midfielder that would fit both short and long-term needs.

Well, they tried. A banged up Colorado Rapids gave it all they got against a Dwayne De
Rosario-inspired Toronto and almost came up with the goods in Canada. Instead, they return home
defeated for a few days to regroup before a vital home and away series against San Jose.
Conor Casey, with his 13th goal of the season, equalized early in the second half
after some rubbish defending from Toronto made Kosuke Kimura's floating cross much more dangerous
than it should have been and
Mike Holody, in only his second MLS game, notched a
crucial goal very late on to give the Rapids some hope but it wasn't to be.

Players can be a little forgetful of the details and the Colorado Rapids are no different. On a
whiteboard in the locker room, they are this week being urged not to forget their passports as they
travel to Canada. More tellingly, there is also a note on that same board that reads "If you are
healthy and not suspended, you are traveling.

Yes,
DaMarcus Beasley was spotted at DSG Park with Cory Gibbs at the weekend and,
no, that doesn't mean he is set to leave Glasgow for Denver.
Gary Smith, today
discussing the likelihood of the Rapids picking up a midfielder before the September 15 deadline,
dismissed speculation the Rangers player could be joining up with his good friend in Colorado.

The
Colorado Rapids played their prettiest soccer in the 2-2 home draw against
Seattle earlier this season. They have played their most professional soccer in the last two home
victories which included a tight 1-0 win over Toronto last night.
Sometimes, it's about digging deep and finding ways to win.

Big game today but then, at this stage of the season, they all are. The
Colorado
Rapids enter a home and away series against Toronto tonight in Commerce City. That will be
followed by a home and away series with San Jose. Very bizarre.
Gary Smith is not
all that happy about the way the fixtures have been arranged but he can't do anything about it and
his prime concern is getting a decent eleven on the field for tonight.

That's right, the boys from the 51st state are in town to face Colorado. Its the first of a

minutes later at 8pm.

We're coming around the final turn of the season, 75% complete. Time for a final mid-season
review.
Goalkeeping: Things haven't changed much in goal from the midway point. Pickens has been solid but
not spectacular, Burpo's a capable backup, and Ceus took the Charlotte Eagles to the USL-2
championship before losing in the final.
