Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher are as important to Liverpool FC now as they were when they
started out on their sparkling Anfield careers more than a decade ago, according to Gary
McAllister.
Injury has restricted Gerrard to just two starts this season, while Carragher has been forced to
settle for a place on the subs bench since a calf strain saw him miss two rare games through
injury.
Liverpool need Steven Gerrard fit to lead by example for summer signings, says Gary

Mark Lawrenson blog: It's the man Gary Speed was that makes this so hard to
accept
Gary Speed was in typical mood laughing, joking, full of enthusiasm about life, his career and
family. That was on Saturday afternoon at the BBC studios. Myself and Alan Shearer sat watching the
lunchtime kick-off, preparing for Match of the Day.

This really is terrible. The Football Association of Wales have confirmed reports that Wales
manager Gary Speed has been found dead at his Cheshire home after apparently committing suicide
this morning. 'No suspicious circumstances' is the official Police line.
Building up to this week's final round of group qualifying fixtures for the 2012 European
Championships, BBC Radio Scotland has produced short audio pastiches daily on their
Sportsound programme featuring new interviews with former Scottish national team players
along with rebroadcasting some audio caught in the moment after some big matches.
Gary McAllister believes Luis Suarez has already proven he was well worth the £24 million
Liverpool paid to sign him from Ajax in January.
Suarez has quickly established himself as one of the most feared forwards in the Barclays Premier
League thanks to his supreme movement and clinical finishing.
Gary McAllister believes it will take time for Andy Carroll and Jordan Henderson to bed in at
Liverpool.
Carroll moved to Anfield in January but has so far just scored four goals in 17 appearances, whilst
Henderson has struggled to impress in the Reds' midfield.
But former midfielder McAllister isn't too worried about the slow start the pair have had on
Merseyside and claims the expectations at the club will have been a surprise to them.

I don't know if a player or manager has ever literally been 'unveiled', but I'd love to
see it happen once and, given the odd nature of this whole appointment, this would have been an
ideal occasion. Can you imagine if a claret & blue chequered sheet was whipped away matador style
to reveal the new manager sheepishly sat there waiting for questions?

In which Scouse crooner Wayne Rooney serenades new flames Andy Carroll and Gary McAllister with
a beautiful, tear-inducing rendition of 'Yesterday' before breaking into a Beatles medley (with a
bit of Oasis thrown in at the end for good measure) in a bar in Barbados.
A Scouser, a Geordie and a Scotsman go to the beach... It's not uncommon for a few of football's
bachelors to hit Las Vegas, Miami or (back in the day) Ayia Napa together during the close season.
But OTP can't pretend we expected to see Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, Liverpool striker
Andy Carroll and [.

Shortly before close of play last night, Aston Villa released a statement to confirm that Gerard
Houllier had indeed left the club on health grounds after only nine months in charge at Villa
Park.
Houllier was forced to miss the last five games of the Premier League season after his dicky
ticker played up again in April, with assistant manager Gary McAllister overseeing Villa's late run
to 9th spot.
Bradley, ready to get some consecutive run in 2011....
A report by German's RP Online states that US midfielder Michael Bradley's option has been
picked up by Aston Villa, ending his tenure at Borussia Monchengladbach.
With a vote of confidence from Villa's 2nd in command Gary McAllister at the end of the campaign
and the departure of Nigel Reo-Coker even more so, Bradley's likely destination appeared to be
Villa for some time now.
Gerard Houllier has stepped down as Aston Villa manager having undergone more
medical tests following his heart problems which seen him miss his teams Premier League run-in,
with Gary McAllister taking temporary charge.
The headline I went with when Martin O'Neill walked out on Aston Villa was something along the
lines of "They think he's taken us as far as he can... he has now". It was a reference to the
persistent theme among the growing dissent that our club was stagnating under his stewardship and
also the fact that the record would forever confirm that that would indeed be as far as he could
take the club.
Aston Villa's caretaker manager Gary McAllister has insisted that the side will be trying to keep
Ashley Young next season, despite interest from Liverpool and Manchester United.
Young came off the ground yesterday in Villa's last game of the season waving to the crowd in what
appeared to be a farewell gesture, though McAllister says it was nothing to do with the England
international's future.
According to Mat Kendrick at the Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa are looking to
make a few signings this summer in the hope of convincing 25-year-old midfielder Ashley
Young to stay. Boss Gary McAllister said,
"I think people were thinking that was staged, but his calf was screaming and he came off .
Gerard Houllier could be in attendance on Sunday as Aston Villa entertain his former employers
Liverpool.
The Villa boss is still recovering from the heart scare he suffered earlier in the season but is
reportedly keen to prove that he is on the mend.
His presence would offer a timely boost to the Villans, with uncertainty continuing to reign
regarding their managerial post.
It is no small secret that the form of Aston Villa has dropped off considerably since Gerard
Houllier took over the reins left by the departed Martin O'Neill back in September. The Birmingham
side, which regularly challenged and, at times, almost broke the coveted top four in seasons past,
have looked a shade of themselves since the former Liverpool manager took charge.

It's the last away game of the season. Here's the team Gary McAllister is sending out at the
Emirates to grab a point or three against an Arsenal side eager to ensure they finish in the top
three at least to guarantee themselves a place in the Champions League next season.
Should be interesting tactical battle, it looks like a 4-2-3-1 vs a 4-3-3.

This one's for the supporters
So, we've come the last home game of the season. It has been another season to remember, not so
much out of any profound satisfaction but more because of the disappointment. However, let's not go
into the season review just yet. Aston Villa are the visitors for today and Arsene Wenger and his
men will look to get a victory sending off for the Grove.
Liverpool is set to raid Aston Villa for the clubs two England wingers Ashley Young and Stewart
Downing who have both enjoyed am impressive season with the midlands club.
Former Watford midfielder Ashley Young is a long term target of Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish
and appears likely to leave at the end of the season after refusing to enter into negotiations to
sign a new contract.
The future of Aston Villa's Ashley Young continues to be a concern for his club, and caretaker boss
Gary McAllister has admitted that the lure of Champions League football is likely to tempt the
England man away from the Midlands.
Young has just a year left on his current contract, and so this summer represents the last chance
for Villa to cash in one of their most valuable assets.
Aston Villa fans haven't had too much to cheer about this season, with their side slipping from
pushing for Europe to battling against relegation in what must have seemed like the blink of an
eye. When their manager Gerard Houllier was forced to miss their last league game against Stoke due
to a medical problem, things must have seemed even worse for the club's loyal fans.

Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier was hospitalized on Wednesday evening in Birmingham after
suffering chest pains.
The Frenchman had undergone serious heart surgery during his managerial stint at Liverpool, but
assistant coach Gary McAllister says that Houllier will only need "medicine and rest" in his road
to recovery.
Gary McAllister MBE was one of the most influential yet under-rated players in Liverpool's recent
history. The only time I saw Gary Mac live was after his retirement. It was during his appearance
in Carra's testimonial last summer against Everton. Upon his introduction the fans instantly broke
into song.
