The top of the league collectively dropped points, allowing Hoffenheim to close the gap but not
much more. The bottom of the league collectively dropped points, allowing Hertha to keep dreaming
about Bundesliga survival but not much more.
Rookie Coach of the Year. Also known as the Markus Babbel Trophy.

I pulled a Jupp Heynckes this week and thus the following links will have to make do for the
moment.

- Football's winning formula revealed: give the ball to the other team and lose all your
challenges. (Ballspiel)
- Mainz 05 are starting to build a global fanbase.

Establishing something comparable to England's Big Four remains a distant dream for last
season's top four in the Bundesliga. Wolfsburg are 7th after disappointingly drawing with Bochum.
Munich are 8th after disappointingly drawing with Cologne. Stuttgart are 13th after disappointingly
losing to Bremen.

Sorry for letting this blog rot away in the late August sun for so many weeks. Other work took
over and left some time but not much energy to spend on other things. But the team blogs have been
bursting with energy all the more at the same time and a few more came back to life, so I guess
there were still enough places on The Offside for Bundesliga related updates.

Oguchi Onyewu won't be playing in the Milan Derby this weekend, but fans may get a chance to
watch him make his Serie A debut when AC Milan faces Siena on Saturday as the new Italian season
begins.
That is just one of the many televised Serie A matches to look for this weekend as lots of
the league's opening games are being televised, including Juventus-Chievo, Inter Milan-Bari and
Bologna-Fiorentina.

There is much to like about the DFB-Pokal.
First of all, its' format contrasts nicely with all other season long competitions. A pure
knockout tournament. 90 minutes minimum. 120 minutes and penalty shootouts if necessary. No draws.
No rematches. No second legs. If you are the away team, live with it.

It's time to brush up on your knowledge of provincial Germany and long forgotten club name
prefixes. The draw for the first round of next season's DFB-Pokal took place today.
Personal Picks of the Round:
Kickers Offenbach - Eintracht Frankfurt (Fierce Derby, Arch Rivals = Fun and Violence - not that
the two should go together and hopefully it'll be mostly peaceful)
Fortuna Düsseldorf - Hamburger SV (sure to become a 51500 sell out)
Union Berlin - Werder Bremen (Union's fan renovated Old Forestry stadium deserved no less than the
title holder for it's first official match)
Everybody else
Germania Windeck - Schalke 04
Concordia Hamburg - TuS Koblenz
Sportfreunde Lotte - VfL Bochum
Tennis Borussia Berlin - Karlsruher SC
Dynamo Dresden - 1.

Eight teams went in, four went out and on the surface the romance of the cup is alive and well. On
the inside, those teams "surprisingly" eliminated are in a deep crisis. Mainz 05 1-0
Schalke 04 Is there anyone still keeping track of the number of setbacks Schalke has to endure this
season? They are [.
