The Milwaukee Wave's league-leading attack sputtered after a strong start Friday night, but that
didn't stop the Wave from clinching the Major Indoor Soccer League Central Division title.
Marco Terminesi had a hand in all three goals, setting up the first two and scoring the
third, and goalkeeper Nick Vorberg allowed just one late goal on a deflected shot as the
Wave held off the Wichita Wings 6-3 in front of 3,241 fans at U.
A late withdrawal prompted changes to two Men's Over-30 groups and the schedule for Madison
United's 19th annual President's Cup indoor soccer tournament, which is next weekend at BreakAway
Sports Center in Madison and Keva Sports Center in Middleton.
The St. Charles Celtics pulled out of the event and were replaced by Madison-area team
Galaxy.
Anticipation is building after January served up a nice set of appetizers for the season to
come, both for MLS and the US National Team. We begin with Klinsmann's first go-round at Camp
Cupcake, the annual January gathering of the "best of the rest" in the USMNT pool...
One-Nil to the USMNT
Results were slow to arrive early in Klinsmann's tenure as USA boss, but a pair of 1-0 wins
(home to Venuzuela and on the road in Panama) sees him start 2012 with an unblemished record.
Natalie Kulla has finished her soccer career and moved on to the next step in her life,
but she keeps winning awards.
The former Marquette goalkeeper, who finished her career last fall ranked second in NCAA
Division I history with 43 shutouts, was named the 2011-12 Big East Conference Scholar-Athlete of
the Year.
The top goal scorer in Wisconsin prep boys soccer history will continue his college career in
the state.
James Weber (Hartford) is transferring from Xavier to UW-Green Bay, the school announced
Tuesday.
Weber scored three goals in 12 appearances (two starts) for the Musketeers (12-5-4) as a
freshman last fall.
Shannon Smyth (Mequon/Milwaukee DSHA) was named to the Republic of Ireland squad for the
Algarve Cup in Portugal.
The 24-year-old Smyth, who will start her second season with Amazon Grimstad FK in Norway's
Toppserien in April, has six career caps. She has dual citizenship because her father,
Brendan, was born and raised in Ireland.
Andy Stadler (Wauwatosa West) is headed back to Swedish club Sandvikens IF.
The club announced that Stadler will re-join the team next week for a trial in advance of the
Division 1 Norra season, which kicks off April 15.
Stadler had five goals in 11 appearances in all competitions for Sandvikens last year, playing
all but 18 minutes in his 10 league matches with the side.
The transfer window report from business advisory firm Deloitte calculates that Premier League
clubs spent around £60m, a decline of 70 per cent on the record level of £225m in January 2011
(admittedly something of an aberration).
Dan Jones, a partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, saw Uefa's financial fair play
rules as a factor in the comparative restraint of clubs and a more sober level of spending among
Premier League clubs.
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America is holding two upcoming coaching courses in
Fond du Lac.
The Youth Level II Diploma course, a class intended for those new to coaching young players, is
scheduled for April 22. The High School Coaches Diploma course, which is focused on issues and
responsibilities unique to prep soccer, is set for July 27 to 29.
The schedules are set for Madison United's 19th annual President's Cup indoor soccer tournament,
which will feature a record 88 teams playing Feb. 18 and 19 at Keva Sports Center in Middleton and
BreakAway Sports Center in Madison.
The tournament kicks off at 7:30 a.m. Feb. 18 at BreakAway, and the final games of the opening
day will kick off 12 hours later over at Keva.
The last time the Baltimore Blast visited U.S. Cellular Arena, they shut out the Milwaukee Wave
for the final 50 minutes and dealt the home team its first loss of the season.
Those points appeared to provide some motivation for the Wave on Saturday night.
Greg Howes had a goal and two assists in a seven-goal first quarter as Milwaukee raced
out to a 14-0 lead and thumped the Blast 22-8 in a Major Indoor Soccer League match watched by
4,707 fans at U.

month.

Bay and closing against DePaul on May 4.

Just like the cosmos the year 2011 died and in its place a supernova of excitement exploded onto
the scene in the form of 2012, which in turn brought the infamous "January Transfer Window".
Ian Bennett had a hat trick and the Milwaukee Wave allowed just two goals over the final
three quarters en route to a 25-10 victory over the Syracuse Silver Knights on Sunday afternoon at
U.S. Cellular Arena, giving legendary coach Keith Tozer his 700th career victory.
Tozer is the winningest coach in indoor soccer history with a 700-433 record in 27 seasons, the
past 19 with the Wave.
Alex Horwath (UW) was all set to go to training camp with Major League Soccer's Sporting
Kansas City and compete for the No. 2 goalkeeper job.
But he couldn't get past one thought.
"In the back of my mind, I didn't really want to be a backup in the MLS right now," the
24-year-old said this week from his home in Maryland.
UW-Whitewater didn't need to look far for its next women's soccer coach.
Ryan Quamme, the top assistant for the school's men's and women's team the past four
years, was promoted to women's coach Thursday.
He succeeds Greg Henschel, who coached both Warhawks teams for 12 seasons before being
named the women's coach at UW-Milwaukee on Tuesday.
Lauren Sesselmann (Green Bay Notre Dame) is headed to the Olympics this summer.
Sesselmann returned from a knee injury to start and played 63 minutes at left back as Canada
beat Mexico 3-1 in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament on Friday
night in Vancouver to earn a berth in the London Games.
Congratulations to Menomonee Falls' Kurt Windbiel, the winner of our "Rise and Shine: The
Jay DeMerit Story" contest.
Windbiel fared the best in predicting the recent U.S. men's national team matches and won the
grand prize: a DVD of the documentary along with a t-shirt and poster from the movie's theatrical
release.
Marco Terminesi had a goal and an assist as the Milwaukee Wave scored four times in a
1:51 span midway through the second quarter to take control and went on to a 16-13 victory over the
host Wichita Wings in a Major Indoor Soccer League game Thursday night.
Greg Howes scored his team-best 14th and 15th goals of the season and added an assist for
the Wave (13-2), who finished 4-1 on their five-game road trip and increased their lead over the
Missouri Comets in the Central Division to four games with nine matches left to play.
The Madison 56ers of the National Premier Soccer League are holding open tryouts for the 2012
season.

from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 1 at Madison indoor facility Salon Centinela, 5018 Blazing Star Drive.
There is a $25 fee to participate in the tryout, and all interested players must fill out a
registration form (download PDF).
After 13 successful seasons at NCAA Division III UW-Whitewater, Greg Henschel is making
the move up to Division I.
Henschel, a former standout player at Brookfield East High School and UW-Oshkosh, was named the
seventh coach in UW-Milwaukee women's soccer history Tuesday. He succeeds Michael Moynihan,
who resigned last month after 14 seasons to take over the Northwestern program.
Ian Barker, who spent nine seasons as an assistant in the University of Wisconsin men's
program, resigned as the coach at Macalester (Minn.) on Tuesday to become the director of coaching
education for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Barker was on assistant on coach Jim Launder's staff at UW from 1989 to '97, helping the
Badgers earn four NCAA tournament berths – including the 1995 national championship.
Milwaukee Wave forward Ian Bennett, who had a hand in 10 goals last week, was named the
Major Indoor Soccer League Player of the Week.
He's the second Milwaukee player to earn the weekly award this season: Defender Joe
Hammes (Cedarburg) was honored Dec. 13.
The 28-year-old Bennett had four goals and six assists as the Wave won two of three matches to
improve their league-best record to 12-2.
The Milwaukee Marquette boys soccer team took on all comers last fall and was nearly perfect,
finishing 24-0-1 against a schedule that included top teams from California, Washington, D.C.,
Missouri, Indiana and Illinois in addition to Wisconsin competition.
The Hilltoppers didn't win a mythical national title – they ended up third in the ESPNHS
Powerade Fab 50 and fourth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll – but their
performance led a major honor for their coach.
For the second time in three years, Lakeland is looking for a new soccer coach.
Tony Pierce, the former Milwaukee Wave standout goalkeeper who coached the Muskies' men's
and women's teams for the past two seasons, resigned from the Sheboygan college earlier this
month.
A news release from the school indicated Pierce was leaving to pursue opportunities closer to
his home in Green Bay.
Greg Howes opened and closed the scoring, and goalkeeper Marcel Feenstra made 19
saves as the Milwaukee Wave bounced back to beat the host Wichita Wings 9-6 in a Major Indoor
Soccer League game Saturday night in the second of three straight meetings between the teams.
Giuliano Oliveiro also scored, defender Joe Hammes added a 3-pointer and Marcio
Leite had two assists for Milwaukee (12-2), which dropped an 18-16 decision to the Wings (6-9)
on Friday night.

(11-2) a 16-9 lead 7:13 into the second half.
Canada rolled past Haiti 6-0 in its opening match Thursday night at the CONCACAF Women's Olympic
Qualifying tournament in Vancouver, B.C., but starting left back Lauren Sesselmann (Green
Bay Notre Dame) was forced to leave the game at halftime due to a knee injury.
The 28-year-old Sesselmann was injured in a collision with Haiti's Samantha Brand.
The southeast Wisconsin soccer community has been in mourning in the past few weeks, with the
passings of Bill Riche and Friedrich "Fritz" Weiler.
Riche, a longtime referee in the Milwaukee area, died Sunday at his home in Brown Deer. He was
60. Riche also was the referee assignor for the Milwaukee Kickers for many years and an instructor
for referee courses.
Here's an update on the 2013 recruiting classes for the state's four Division I men's soccer
programs, and other state players who have made non-binding verbal commitments to colleges.
Recruit information was gathered from a number of media and team sources. Players can sign
national letters of intent starting in February 2013.
Tony Walls (Wauwatosa East/UW-Green Bay) was in Florida less than two weeks ago for the
Major League Soccer Combine.
Now he's headed back to the Sunshine State.
The midfielder was selected by the Chicago Fire in the third round of the MLS Supplemental Draft
(No. 47 overall) on Tuesday and will report to preseason training camp with the team Friday in Ave
Maria, Fla.
Jamie Lieberman (Racine Prairie School/UW-Parkside) was a busy man last week – the
Norfolk SharX goalkeeper made a whopping 54 saves in a pair of Major Indoor Soccer League
games.
The impressive performances led to the first two wins of his professional career, and on Tuesday
he reaped another reward as he was named the MISL Player of the Week.
Jay DeMerit worked his way up from Bay Port High School all the way to the Premier League
and the U.S. national team – his incredible tale was turned into a documentary, "Rise and Shine:
The Jay DeMerit Story."
Now you can win a DVD of the movie, a t-shirt and a poster from the theatrical release from
Wisconsin Soccer Central.
The Milwaukee Wave have the top offense in the Major Indoor Soccer League, even if they don't
have any of the league's top scorers.
The defending champions showed off their deep attack again Monday night, as Marco
Terminesi scored four goals and Nick Perera and Ian Bennett added two apiece in a
23-10 victory over the host Rochester Lancers in a match watched by 5,212 fans.
The Home Internationals Soccer Tournament, 1946-84, A Complete Record by Gary Watton is
a match-by-match record of this annual tournament, once played amongst the four national teams of
the United Kingdom - England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Each match gets its own page
and the details include lineup (interestingly including which club the player played for at the
time, a great touch), scorers, and a brief summary to give it context.
David Nikolic, a Milwaukee native who spent 18 years in the UW-Milwaukee program, was
named the Great Lakes Region women's assistant coach of the year by the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America.
Nickolic and head coach Michael Moynihan left the Panthers last month to take the same
positions at Northwestern.
Paul Riley thinks very highly of Sarah Hagen (Appleton North/UW-Milwaukee).
So much so that even though Hagen signed with Bayern Munich through June and joined up with the
German club this week, Riley still wanted to make sure his team had the rights to the high-scoring
forward if she chooses to play in Women's Professional Soccer.
