This weekend kicks off what is sure to be a thrilling season in France. After Lyon's selfish
display of seven consecutive league titles from 2001-8, the past three champions have been
different and a fourth this season would be no surprise. Luckily, League 1 has always boasted an
exceptional array of club names.

Manchester United tonight faces Schalke 04 in the first leg of the Champions League semifinal at
the Veltins Arena.
The German side is tagged as the underdog of the tie, however, as Valencia and Inter Milan found
out the hard way, Schalke has plenty of weapons that could make United pay.
Barcelona and AC Milan moved closer to their titles, with Lionel Messi achieving a milestone goal.
Dortmund slipped up in Germany but remain clear of Bayer Leverkusen, while Marseille won the French
League Cup. Celtic and Rangers could not be separated in a 0-0 Old Firm stalemate and PSV Eindhoven
went down to Feyenoord in the Eredivisie.
PARIS, France — Marseille boss Didier Deschamps admitted his team flopped in front of Sir Alex
Ferguson on Sunday as the Manchester United boss scouted his Champions League opponents. Marseille
drew 0-0 at relegation-haunted Monaco, a result which left the French champions in fifth place in
the table.
There's been plenty more action in European domestic cup competitions this week including the
French League Cup semi-finals, Coppa Italia, English and Scottish FA Cup replays as well as the
completion of the German Cup 3rd round following the postponement of two games in December due to
bad weather.
PARIS, France — Montpellier moved to within one win of their first trophy in over 20 years on
Tuesday as they beat 10-man Paris Saint Germain in their French League Cup semi-final. A header by
Olivier Giroud four minutes from the end of extra-time handed Montpellier who won the second of

Napoli, Sevilla and Manchester City were all big winners in domestic cup ties tonight.
Sevilla are through to the Copa del Rey semi-finals after wrapping up a 6-3 aggregate victory
against Villarreal. The Liga rivals drew 3-3 in the first leg of their last-eight tie, but it was
Gregorio Manzano's side who took charge of the second leg.
PARIS, France — Lille kept up their unlikely charge for a first French title in over half a
century on Saturday when African strike pair Moussa Sow and Gervinho scored in a 2-0 win at Nice.
Lille, whose last league triumph came in 1954, stay a point clear of Paris Saint Germain who
defeated Sochaux [.
