A lot like last year. Teams can protect 11 players, must protect up to 3 international players if
they have them (although if a team has 3 or less they can leave at least one unprotected);
designated players, generation adidas and home grown players do not have to be protected (unless a
DP has a no-trade clause); teams can not lose more than one player, and the draft will go ten
rounds.

"Can I get back to you in five years?"One thing has become crystal clear over the last few days of post-season naval gazing at BMO Field.
It doesn't matter, who the head coach is, it doesn't matter how the star player feels, it doesn't
matter what the supporters want - Mo Johnston (Yes, the Scottish Hall of Famer!

One of Major League Soccer's biggest free agents will be leaving MLS this winter, but he may not be
gone for good.
Chicago Fire star Cuauhtemoc Blanco has signed a contract with Mexican second division club
Veracruz for the 2010 season, but will have an opt-out clause in his contract that will allow him
to return to the Fire after the 2010 World Cup, multiple reports out of Mexico have revealed.

EPL Talk 26 October @ 07:00 AM EST
When Michael Lewis published Moneyball in 2003, it instantly became one of the most influential
books about American sports in a generation. Michael Lewis, normally a financial writer, analyzed
how baseball's Oakland A's managed to consistently produce highly competitive teams despite a
payroll that was a fraction of their biggest rivals.

Nah, it doesn't have to be that bad. Here are some things to start the week:
- The top division of the United Soccer Leagues is a mess. Carolina, Minnesota and Miami are
apparently out of the loop's good graces, having not renewed their contractual obligations to the
league. Those teams are no longer linked on USL's list of teams and all of those teams' players
were told on Friday that they're free agents (Carolina doesn't necessarily agree with that
characterization).

With plenty of talk about players Liverpool wanted and couldn't afford to sign this summer, it
seems strange to me that our squad wasn't bolstered with some proven, experienced players on free
transfers. As I will outline, there were quite a few players available who could've provided much
needed competition in the squad.

It's transfer season all over the world. The fees, as always, are skyrocketing for the A-listers.
But what about the little guys? In Europe, the Bosman Ruling allows those whose contracts have
expired to move freely from team team. Free agents. Free will. They can do as they wish.
And then there's Mexico.

It's April 15th, which means two things. It is the last day to file your taxes (unless you get
an extension) and it is the last day for MLS teams to sign players during the winter transfer
window.
With New York's acquisition of Salvadoran defender Alfredo Pacheco and Houston's acquisition of
defender Andrew Hainault looking like the only significant signings to be completed this week, this
year's transfer deadline looks to be a tame one.
