Morning all, welcome to the blog.
Well, Mile Sterjovski didn't feature for the Socceroos - which in a way is good news, because it
means he's injury free for Perth Glory. Seems like a selfish way of looking at things, but meh.
Meanwhile, congrats to the Kiwis for joining the party in South Africa - we couldn't dream about
going there without ya.

Brown's in the box dive for a penalty should lead to a suspension - despite the spot kick being
missed. Referee Ben Williams should be ashamed of himself the number of times he has waved on
legitimate penalties from the Roar, and give this one.
What has become obvious is the home ground advantage for Wellington.

The alarming drop-off in A-League crowds was surely the main impetus behind these comments by Frank
Lowy this week.
The A-League on free-to-air TV? A worthwhile aim, but wishful thinking at the moment. It is hard to
see any of the commercial networks being willing to fit even a single game into their crowded
weekend schedules, and coverage on the ABC or SBS would not bring in anything like sufficient
revenue.

Interesting article on The Roar today regarding the viability of having the A-League on Free To Air
(FTA) TV. It has generated a substantial amount of discussion amongst the readers and got me
thinking about where I stand on the topic.
Although author Adrian Musolino makes some good points I cannot help but think he has missed a
critical one.

If Frank Lowy knows anything then Canberra are "unlikely," to get an A-League spot on Monday. But
Canberrans shouldn't panic just yet.
And you know Frank isn't always in tune with his CEO and his team and Mike Cockerill is hardly
renowned for getting to the bottom of a story is he?
He still thinks it's Wollongong or no-one or maybe he's looking for a job in West Sydney, either
way coming from Mike.

The Newcastle soap opera continues, with Branko Culina taking a second shot at the A-League after
the surprise departure of Gary van Egmond.
Culina has a considerable cheer squad within Australian football, with one of his long-term fans
welcoming his return with open arms. If he can indeed get Newcastle playing football similar to
that of his Sydney United and Sydney Olympic sides during the fading days of the NSL, the fans will
be grateful.

Astrojax asked me for the real NPC lunch..so here it is.
I enjoyed a wonderful steak, with my friends from Capital Football at the National Press Club
today. Frank Lowy, Sir Frank to you, and FFA CEO Ben Buckley were entertaining us...and they
did.
I moved seamlessly across to Canberra A-League bid leader Ivan Slavich, asking him quickly and
quietly how the bid meeting this morn had gone with the FFA.

Great to hear that the first person to ring Frank Lowy to congratulate him on Socceroos qualifying
for the 2010 World Cup was fmr football boss and head of Australian Rugby Union...John O'Neill. We
need more of this.
And even Andrew Dimitriou, (see quote below) AFL Supremo has come out and has said AFL supports the
Aussie World Cup bid.

Press Club...and his full speech is below.
Safe to say the guy is an inspiration with a can-do attitude.

FourFourTwo are reporting
FFA chairman Frank Lowy said at today's launch of season four of the A-League that he'd
like 14 teams to eventually play in the league over time.
And that means Canberra for sure.
It's now a matter of when not if for Canberra.

For those that have missed the news, Rob Baan announced that he will not renew his contract which
expires in six months. Citing a desire to return to the Netherlands and spend more time with his
wife and family, it appears the 65 year is looking forward to retirement.
Hired back in Dec 2006, Baan was appointed to the role of Technical Director and tasked by Frank
Lowy to.

Kaz Patafta to PSV, Matthew Spiranovic to play for Croatia, Eric Cantona to Melbourne Victory, and
Frank Lowy to hand over to his son in time.
I've read them all, fell for none of them.
Unfortunately the last one, according to Mike Cockerill is not an April Fool, but Frank may well
hand over to Stephen Lowy one day.
