When Brian Kidd was named caretaker manager of Manchester City on Monday, it brought me down memory lane. As a young Fort Lauderdale Strikers ball boy, Kidd had been one of the goal scoring heroes of mine. In 1982, when the Strikers signed Kidd, it was such a big deal that my family and I set out on the road for a five hour drive north to Jacksonville to see the legendary attacking player's first game in the bumblebee Strikers kit.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are to the home stretch. The games mattered before, but now they really matter. Way more than they did before. Now it's lose and you're out. Done. Finished. All those other words. As we talked about last week, the Scorpions and the Rowdies don't have to compete in this play-in game, due to their being one and two respectively in the league standings.
I thought coming into this week, we would be talking a little more about how the NASL playoff
picture would be a little clearer. Of course, every team did everything possible to not move away
from each other. Well, thats a bit of an over statement, as the bottom of the table became a little
clearer, but that doesn't help many people.
Huh. Where did all the goals go? Did the heat wave finally get to everyone? Did every team suddenly
start signing better defensive players(Hint: No)? To put this into perspective, more goals were
scored in ONE game last week than were scored by all the teams this week, which even included an
extra midweek game!
After last weeks news extravaganza, we actually got to (mostly) just enjoy the games this week and
get down to work on who will start getting a hold on their spots and most teams begin their push to
the playoffs. The top 6 teams in the table get into the playoffs, with only the bottom two feeling
all sad and lonely.
Eight games left to go for the Sounders this season, and chances are that Seattle is out of the
supporter's shield, nine points behind the San Jose Earthquakes. But even without a win down in Big
D, Seattle's tie in near Dallas held some positive developments, as this article from some guy
named Jeremiah Oshan outlines.
After a shaky last week, the San Antonio Scorpions solidified themselves as the cream of the NASL
crop. With a dominating 4-0 win over the second place Tampa Bay Rowdies, the Scorpions have
clinched at least a playoff spot with 6 games left in their schedule.
