The WPS home page and standings page are afraid to admit it, apparently, but Chicago is out of the
playoffs. I'm guessing it's because "See the Sol and Red Stars jog around for two hours!" isn't a
recipe for FSC ratings gold. Nevertheless, we must not quail from the truth. The Red Stars have 17 points, and two games left =
maximum of 23 points. Click to continue reading...
Cristiane scores in 2nd straight; Chicago nets another draw The Chicago Red Stars kept their unbeaten road record intact Sunday as they played FC Gold Pride to
a 1-all draw in Women's Professional Soccer action at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. Brazilian Cristiane (above) scored a goal for a second straight game in the 47th minute as Chicago
(2-3-4, 1-0-3 on the road) earned its first point after falling behind an opponent. Click to continue reading...
Before heading into the stadium I checked out the shop - no skort, or wrap, or whatever it is. The
guys working there laughed when I asked if they carried it. Looking at the pile of Marta shirts, I
found myself contemplating not the name on the back, but the name on the front. Amway? I decided
I'd rather wear a Brazil shirt. Click to continue reading...
Yesterday I got to meet Charlie Naimo, who is currently the coach of the W-League league champions
The Pali Blues and is also the manager to the WPS Los Angeles team (whose name will be unveiled
this weekend at Sunday's Galaxy game). Walking into the Pali Blues office in Santa Monica, my eyes
went first to the Formiga jersey on the wall (framed by shirts from Kelly Smith and Marinette
Pichon). Click to continue reading...
As the Senate gets ready to vote on a new bill to stave off economic disaster, and Sarah prepares
(feverishly) to debate, and George Will joins the ranks of those who see her as unqualified to
serve ... and some (unfortunately) find themselves feeling sorry for the lipsticked pitbull ... my
thoughts turn (feverishly) to [. Click to continue reading...
MARTA has apparently been 'drafted' by the new LA professional women's team. I have a pickup game
to join shortly, so can't do my research on this just yet - but OH MY GOD, I am so HAPPY! I am
going to pass out from excitement! FORMIGA is going to the Bay Area!!! Look out, though - Cristiane
will be (might be? Click to continue reading...
WPS has just released the picks from the international player draft held this afternoon.
Remember the caveats -- they're really drafting rights within WPS. Some of these players might
not make it over here, and it's risky to draft a player who's in a secure situation elsewhere in
the world. That should explain why no German or Norwegian players were drafted.
This is it, people. For country, for glory, for gold. The U.S. versus Brazil. Anthems. All the U.S. players are singing along. Solo, Mitts, Rampone, Markgraf, Chalupny, Tarpley, Boxx, O'Reilly, Lloyd, Hucles, Rodriguez. Brazil Barbara, Simone, Tania, Renata Costa, Erika, Maycon, Daniela, Formiga, Ester, Cristiane, Marta, Kickoff! Click to continue reading...
Maybe the photo gives you a clue as to whom I'm picking to win the Gold Medal match. The only
remaining question is whether or not the US will score a goal. Game time is 8:00 am and it's being
broadcast live on USA Network channel.
The player pictured is Formiga, I'll point you to From A Left Wing and Jennifer Doyle's
commentary on Brazil's decisive 4-1 win over the World Cup champion German squad in the semifinal
Monday.
Everyone in Women's Professional Soccer is pulling for a US victory tomorrow both from a patriotic
and a business perspective. The prevailing thought is that a return to a world championship, if not world dominance, would
provide a good kick start for WPS. A gold medal for the US would certainly provide a boost for the League for all the obvious reasons,
but i think it's also important to recognize that the League benefits if Brazil wins. Click to continue reading...
4 - 1 is a pretty crushing margin to win a game by after starting off by being a goal
down.Formiga, Marta and two goals by Cristiane cancelled out the goal by Birgit Prinz for the
German women's team. The USA women's team also scored 4 goals (over Japan) to reach the finals.
Germany had a breakaway goal by Birgit Prinz - her first of the tournament. At @ the 40th minute
Brazil - gradually starting to look more like themselves - scored on a beautiful play that went
through Marta (faking a shot and drawing the defense) to Formiga who slotted it through. It was
