The first rock was thrown with such force that it traveled through the bus, smashing windows on its
way in and out, Michel Gaillaud, a French doctor, recalls. Panicked, he and the football players he
treats dived for cover. "We were bombarded with stones," says Gaillaud. "People were screaming. We
were lying on the floor.

36 year old Alexandre da Silva Mariano, a.k.a. Amaral, is not one player that you would expect
to be the (unofficially) most polite footballer.
Previously playing in footballing danger zones such as Italy (Parma; AC Fiorentina) and Turkey
(Besiktas), representing Brazil 31 times, and winning an Olympic Bronze medal (Atlanta 1996),
nobody anticipated that the former grave digger would have written a thank you note to his most
recent club, Perth Glory.

The debate regarding footballers doing what they want in society, crept into our lively office

King story.

Eduardo's back heel onto Arshavin, who runs and takes the ball and finds the pass to Diaby, who
sets himself up and scores.
That my friends was the goal of the night and the fourth for Arsenal against AZ Alkmaar. The
football recently played by Arsenal is nothing short of phenomenal, offensively of course.

The Guardian has an interesting piece on a forgotten tale involving United players, 100
years ago. Here's an extract:
The first meeting of the Association Football Players Union in 1907 was chaired by United
player Billy Meredith – the "Welsh Wizard", who was one of the first footballing
superstars.

Goalkeepers can often be overlooked when talking about the best football
players, but a great goalkeeper can inspire the rest of the side to play with confidence and help
them perform better than they look on paper. this was surely the case with Lev
Yashin, quite arguably the best goalkeeper at any World Cup.

Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs have both surprisingly spoken out about the controversial issue of
football players earning every penny of their astronomically large salaries.
When the starting salary for a nurse is £20k a year, a teacher is £21k a year and a police
officer is £22k a year, it's hard to argue that John Terry deserves £160k a week!

In yet another club versus country debate, Belgium have come down hard on midfielder Marouane
Fellaini. Unlike most other club versus country dilemmas, though, Fellaini is coming under fire
simply for choosing to receive long overdue surgery to get his wisdom teeth removed. Belgium,
meanwhile, has reacted angrily to his decision as they are clamoring for the Everton player to be
banned from club football this coming weekend.

If you are a Bath City fan then yesterday's meeting with Bishop's Cleeve was the most important
match of the season. It was not actually the glory of a FA Cup Third Qualifying Round that made it
so important, though. What really made it a must win was the prize money: £7,500 was up for grabs
for the winner.

Football is a passionate game.
It's one of it's greatest charms.
I don't think anyone would dispute that analysis.
But where those feelings flare into aggression and violence, or the goading of players (including
racist and homophobic chanting), that passion become problematic.

The English tradition of speculation and rumours about football players and which club they're
signing continues and will do so until the transfer window closes on September 1st. The media is
full of transfer news, rumour and speculation, but the only sure way of finding out the truth is
when a player holds up the home shirt of their new club for press photographers, even if it is too
big.

It never actually happened though! My being in Dublin and my heroes hanging-out in Manchester
didn't help and, in truth, I never actually had a cohesive strategy.
