Saturday's matches saw Newell's Old Boys return to the top of the table with a 2-1 home win over
River Plate in which, not for the first time, Diego Buonanotte gave the visitors their only joy of
the match. A little later, Atlético Tucumán ended a run of eight matches without a win, thrashing
Tigre [.

Tell us your background as a player in Scotland.
My footballing background
goes back many years. I was a player in my younger days and I had a number of trials around some of
the local teams, but never really made it onto the big stage. I was a big fan of football as
well.

English Premier League club Liverpool may have had a difficult week on the pitch, but has had a

South London club was a welcome return to the competition proper for the club.

Is it just me, or are football clubs digging deep deep holes for themselves every time they sign a
manager to a big money multi-year contract? News broke over the weekend that former Inter coach
Roberto Mancini had finally reached a settlement with his old club. A settlement that apparently
made him €8m richer.

I've written that Garber keeps his ideological cards close to his chest, but in fining DCU Prez
Kevin Payne $5000 today for calling a spade a spade—that the onfield product in MLS is not good
enough and won't draw in more fans until it is—means that the guy isn't hearing what needs to be
heard.
This is really not good, especially in light of the fact Payne didn't even mention bringing better
players with more money, everyone's favourite MLS bugbear.

Contrary to what Sir Red Nose said, the ref was right in not sending off Carragher when he brought
down Owen outside the box. In an article in Tuesday's Guardian a senior, un-named, ref agreed with
Marriner's handling of the matter.
He said: "Ferguson clearly doesn't understand the law about the denial of an obvious goal-scoring
opportunity.

On the back of the news that Portsmouth has a transfer ban, comes news that Hull's accountants
have raised concerns over the club's "ability to continue as a going concern" should they be
relegated from the Premier League.
The latest Hull report covers the year ending 31 July 2008, when Hull made a loss of nearly

We are occasionally reminded that, although the amount of money in football has increased
dramatically over the last two decades or so, football isn't quite the "big" business that we might
occasionally believe it to be. Real Madrid's annual turnover is reported to be over £300m, which
sounds like a lot until you start comparing it with other businesses.

When a conference on supporter involvement in English football includes speakers from Barcelona,
UEFA, the F.A. and non-league football clubs, you know something unusual is going on.
This isn't the Leaders in Football conference of a couple of weeks ago, but it might have been
just as important: Supporters Direct's annual conference concluded last week in Birmingham, and it
seems to have cut to the heart of the question of how and why supporters should be involved in the
governance of their clubs.
