A violent riot erupted following a match between Egyptian rivals Al-Masry and Al-Ahly, leaving
dozens of people dead and hundreds of others injured.
According to various reports, the still-escalating death count from the incident in Port Said,
Egypt, stands at 73, while Egyptian outlets are reporting that the country's health ministry has
said that more than 1,000 are hurt.
The U.S. men's national team plays its second game in a week, and second of 2011 in Panama City
tonight against CONCACAF foe Panama (8:30pm, Galavision/ESPN3.com).
The United States is coming off a 1-0 victory against Venezuela, but tonight should offer a much
tougher test as the Americans face the Panama side that beat the Americans in the Gold Cup group
stages before losing a 1-0 decision in the Gold Cup semifinals.
Will Jones sport the armband again? Will he have a better first touch?
When we last met out protagonist the USMNT it was doing battle north of the border, putting out
a tiny skirmish, so to speak, that was attempting to be kindled by Venezuela.
The States controlled "the battle" and at the death put the South American foe to the proverbial
sword, 1-0 after a dominating display especially in midfield against an overmatched opponent.
So many times he's saved us. The forward bursts through, draws back the hammer and pulls the
trigger, eyes not on the ball but on the expectant net only to find that in a whirl the object of
his desire has disappeared, swept away by the sweetest of tackles. No bone or muscle, it's the
timing that has defeated him.
The first few months of the Jurgen Klinsmann era certainly had its ups and downs, but that should
be expected. When a new coach is brought in, he needs time to see what he has to work with, to
implement his philosophies, and to see what works and what doesn't, and as impatient as some are to
see instant results, that process is still very much in its infancy for Klinsmann.
With a day to digest it all, here are 10 final points from the L.A. Galaxy's win Sunday at the
Home Depot Center.
- LA Galaxy was the best team in Major League Soccer wire to wire, as I've said, before. They are
a deserving champion. As for these questions of whether the Galaxy 2011 is the best club in MLS
history?

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
In Flanders fields!

Manchester United have been a dominant force in the English Premier League era, winning an
amazing 12 titles in 19 seasons. Four of those titles have come in the last five seasons, including
last season, when they beat out Manchester City and Chelsea by nine points.
Four teams, two games and 16 days until MLS Cup 201 at Home Depot Center in Carson.
Staff Writer Phil Collin looks at the familiar foe the Galaxy will face Sunday (live at 6 p.m.
on ESPN), while sister paper The Salt Lake Tribune plays up the underdog role for visiting Real
Salt Lake. The Galaxy's opponent, by the way, still has injury doubts about its starting center
backs, although I'm sure the Galaxy has unspoken worries of their own whenn it comes to David
Beckham's status after his months-long back issue reappeared after that nasty challenge in the game
against NYRB.
Colorado's journey into the 2011 playoff starts at Dick's Sporting Goods Park at 8 Thursday
night against the same foe the team edged on a successful run to the 2010 MLS Cup.
The Columbus Crew meet the Rapids in a one-shot wild card match the night after FC Dallas and
the New York Red Bulls tangle in the other wild card match.
A month ago, friend and foe agreed: Ajax would be dominating the Eredivisie this season. But a
series of poor games threw the champs back. And right before the clash against rivals AZ, a crisis
looms around the corner.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - It has been a little more than two months since Jurgen Klinsmann took over
as head coach of the U.S. men's national team, but that short period of time hasn't stopped an
increasing pressure from befalling the team already.
This is Championship Soccer tonight. This is why teams are put together. This U.S. Open Cup
tournament is what the Chicago Fire are about. Over 6 months have passed since Chicago started the
journey and either way it will end tonight on CenturyLink Field in Seattle. Chicago must vanquish a
foe they have never done so in 6 attempts to get their hands on the trophy.
Just off the horn: Jozy Altidore was pulled from AZ's line-up to face KNVB Cup foe Groningen as a
precaution after experiencing a bit of ankle trouble during the warm-ups. The club do not expect
it's anything serious, but he will have an exam in the morning.- Greg Seltzer
The most exhilarating 30 seconds of this season's Champions League so far Alex Pato's quick-fire
goal in the Nou Camp – just half a minute in, the fifth fastest ever recorded in the tournament
– was a treat to watch. A brilliant display of pace and exuberance temporarily toppling a
bullet-proof foe.

Former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has obviously had a serious and long-term effect on his
former Premier League rival, Sir Alex Ferguson.
Accoding to the Daily Express, during a recent interview in the offices of an Italian
newspaper, Fergie noticed a photo of Benitez on the wall.
By Puck Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome back into the Happy Hour. I know you are all extremely angry
about the US loss last night. Or maybe you aren't angry at all that Jurgen managed to lose on home
soil to a CONCACAF foe in his second match—a feat that it took Bob three years to [...]
Oliver Holt's big match verdict: Fergie almost looked sorry for humiliating his old
foe
Re-births have been celebrated with happy and heady regularity in the 25 years since Sir Alex
Ferguson took over at Manchester United. But amid the euphoria that accompanied the latest rampage
of gilded youth at Old Trafford yesterday, an element of sorrow intruded, too.
An intriguing experiment begins tonight; an under-19 Champions League-style competition with some
of the best academies in Europe. And the home-and-away group stage starts out with a bang for
Liverpool, as they host what on paper looks set to be their toughest foe of that opening round when
Sporting Lisbon comes to town.

There's not a ton of change in this week's rankings, but don't expect that to last. A
crucial week looms with potentially huge matchups (take your pick between FC Dallas vs. Seattle or
Columbus vs. Philadelphia) and there's no way some of those teams will get away unscathed. As for
this week, the Union and D.
Even with a two-year absence from the league, the San Jose Earthquakes remain one of the teams
the Colorado Rapids have faced more often than almost any team in Major League Soccer.
The Rapids have played Los Angeles 55 times and Dallas (first as The Burn and then as FC) 51.
Next on that list is San Jose, which has met Colorado 46 times since that first MLS season in
1996.
By J Hutcherson - WASHINGTON, DC (Aug 3, 2011) US Soccer Players -- As the United States National
Team regroups under a new coach and against an old foe, here are five things to look for against
Mexico (9pm ET - ESPN2). Shape Of Things To Come Though new US National Team coach Jurgen Klinsmann
has discussed at length a multi-level process as the next step for the USA, we're still dealing
with a team.

Uruguay is now in the somewhat unenviable position of being regarded as the favorite to win the
2011 Copa America following a remarkable quarterfinal round that saw both Argentina and Brazil
crash out on penalties. The Celeste must guard against any kind of letdown after knocking out the
hosts on Saturday in a pulsating encounter that will probably go down as the match of the
tournament.
Two and a half months ago, the Portland Timbers kicked off their inaugural MLS season with a
defeat. Not just any defeat, mind you, with a harrowing 3-1 loss where the opposing team dominated
almost every aspect of the pitch. That team was tonight's foe, the Colorado Rapids.
It was a harrowing experience for those of us who thought that the pre-season would be
indicative of the regular season.

TAMPA, Fla. - The U.S. men's national team began preparations for its second Goup C match on a
sunny and hot morning in Central Florida on Thursday, gearing up to play a Panama team it knows
quite well.
The United States will battle Panama for the ninth team in the two teams' history, and eighth
time in the last eight years.
Portugal have the chance today to make ammends for their poor start to the Euro 2012 campaign as
they host Norway at the Estadio da Luz Stadium for top spot in Group H. The Norweigans will prove a
tough foe after already handing the Portuguese a 1-0 loss in Norway costing former coach Carlos
Queiroz his job.
When you train for an event or for a full season or whatever, you'd like the curve to look
something like this: Start slowly with a lightweight foe, graduated to mid-level competition and
then ramp up to the high-quality stuff.
Well, the U.S. national team's big summer looks like an inverted curve.
Three of the four regional winners will be determined tonight. Locally, it's Catholic vs McAuley
at Cooper Soccer Complex while the Sectional foe will be determined in St James (District 11).
District 12: at Greenwood Stadium Field in Springfield, Final
#1 Catholic Fighting Irish 6
#2 McAuley Warriors 0
District 11: In St James, Final
#2 Dixon Bulldogs 2
#1 St James Tigers 1
District 10: in Sedalia, Final
#1 St Paul Lutheran 2
#3 Sacred Heart 1
Sacred Heart clobbered Stover 9-0 but I had to go to the Sedalia Democrat to find that info.
The Home District is 11 while Bolivar has been moved to District 12, which will be the source of
the Sectional opponent. The Quarterfinal foe will come from District 9 or 10, Central Missouri area
schools. The winner in District 11 will earn their first ever District title and includes 1st year
program Republic and the 3rd year Wildcats and Bulldogs.
Roma have long been a club to polarise opinions, seldom does one encounter a fair-weather
Giallorosso fan or indeed an ambivalent foe – you're either fervently for or against. Then,
within Roma's very own fan base there exists that very same dynamic deeply passionate tifosi who
bicker amongst themselves, often furiously, in a bid to impose a personal vision of all things i
