Letters from Shanghai: The mediocrity remains, but is Drogba on the horizon?

By Andrew Crawford, writing from Shanghai

The dust has started to settle on the ugly coup that ousted Jean Tigana from the Shanghai Shenhua dug out last month- but that doesn't mean things have improved.

Shenhua's last game, another dull, uninspiring 0-0 draw against Shanghai Shenxin at the Hongkou was the fourth game in a row that the former have gone without scoring a goal.

A Drogba joined a Malouda today at Dijon, just not the ones we're familiar with.

Not these two

Dijon, who will compete in France's top flight for the first time in the club's history this season, announced the signing of Freddy Drogba on Wednesday. Freddy is, of course, the younger brother of The Mighty One.

Roberto Di Matteo has been another inspired decision by Roman Abramovich. The perceptive Italian has managed to solve the old and new divide within the Chelsea squad. There is finally a distinct feeling of squad harmony not seen since the happy times of Mourinho. Winning matches usually helps, but more importantly, man management is the key.

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech is dumbfounded by the heavy criticism heaped at manager Andre Villas-Boas in the wake of the club's recent struggles, arguing that the manager cannot run on the pitch and prevent errors made by the players.

Cech's teammate Florent Malouda made the same assertion before the disappointing 2-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen last night but Villas-Boas maintained that he must take the responsibility on his shoulders.

Chelsea 4-1 West Ham: Malouda the star of the show!

Chelsea beat West Ham 4-1 at the Bridge on Saturday with goals from Alex, Didier Drogba (2) and Florent Malouda. Drogba will grab some headlines with this double strike but it was Florent Malouda and his fantastic performance that earned a standing ovation from the Chelsea fans.
Malouda ran the show on Saturday, had plenty of the ball and although he scored he had a part to play in two of the other goals with sublime crosses for Alex to head home in the first half to put us 1-0 up and Didier Drogba header at the far post from point blank range after another superb Malouda cross.

"We always talk about that famous first game, but it's so important. You can get brittle if you lose, or if you win the first game, it changes a lot," France's Thierry Henry told L'Equipe prior to taking on Uruguay.

Sunny days at The Bridge are back, weather wise. But on the pitch, I think we can all agree this was not our best display. Despite starting brightly, the Blues failed to find the net once more, until a scrum inside the box resulted in an awfully fortuitous goal for Florent and the Machine.

The home kit was unveiled in January and while it is simple and nice, it is not nearly as tight as the Adidas kit Les Bleus sported during the 2010 World Cup.

For some reason out of the blue this morning rumours have surfaced that Chelsea and United are looking at making ridiculous bid's of £22m for Gareth Bale as early as January.

I for one do not believe this one for a second. First of all for two reasons, Ashley Cole and Florent Malouda, second of all maybe it's because Yuri Zhirkov recently stated that he needed to play more or he would have to leave Chelsea.
