SLU Billikens Celebrate 100 Years

Bears players Vania, Demarzi and Dryden surround Kyle Patterson in the box

St Louis University Billikens - 3
As I continue my birthday road trip home to STL, to spend time with my mother, sisters, niece and nephews, I still found some time to check out some soccer.

The SIX greatest football rivalries EVER: Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs, Manchester United, Celtic and Rangers take a bow!

17
As football fans we all like a nice rivalry to spice things up, but have these pairings gone a little too far in their mutual hatred of each other? Probably not! 6) Brazil - Argentina Oh boy, when these two nations meet, expect fireworks (and by fireworks I mean violence)! Even ... Click to continue reading...

Lyon vs. Nice

0

Sorry that this match preview is so late, but I've been on vacation for the last two weeks, and John, who has kindly been covering in my absence, is traveling as well. So this is going to be a little shorter than normal.

This is the fifth game of the season, and Lyon and Marseille are still tied for first place, with Marseille ahead due to more goals scored.

La Machine's La Princesse. Review of the Liverpool Spider

1
Awseome is such an over-used word but in this canse it's the only one that fits. Hats off to everyone involved with La Machine. It was truly amazing and as far as I could see everyone absolutely fell in love with it. I stood for hours on Church Street, I sat for hours outside Liverpool Museum, it was worth every second when you first see that long leg extending out in front of the spider. Uh, Mario Gomez is on fire!

1
I saw this over at the Telegraph.
Mario Gomez of VfB Stuttgart walks through fireworks prior to a preseason friendly match against Arsenal London on July 30 2008, in Stuttgart, Germany.
What Mario? You couldn't walk around the fireworks.

And what'd you score like negative-3 goals at Euros. Click to continue reading...

Almunia V Lehmann-ITS OOOONNNNNNN!.......

1
It is similar to Mr Miyagi taking on the karate kid at the Mercedes-Benz Arena tonight. Teacher taking on pupil, father pitted against son......

OK, its not really like that but you get my drift!

Arsenal play Stuttgart and the goalkeepers, who have battled for the number one slot at Arsenal for four years, are pitted against each other. Click to continue reading...

Ronaldinho to Milan...

It's no wonder AC couldn't manage to match Man City's £200k per week bid for the bucktoothed two-time FIFA Player of the Year. Look and the money they put into this fireworks display to welcome the man to the team! Shame really, as a long-time fan of the guy, I was really looking forward to seeing him in the Prem but alas, we'll have to make do with the Sunday afternoon Serie A match on Telelatino.

Week 15 Recap

2
It was a typical Fourth of July weekend - lots of fireworks. The same could be said about the five MLS games that took place on Friday and Saturday. Dallas left it late to snatch a point from KC, while the late show out West featured Razov doing the same to grab a win for [...] Click to continue reading...

Columbus

I'm watching the Crew-Fire game on FSC right now. It looks like they've got a good crowd there because they're having fireworks after the game. But it reminded me of a joke my buddy Chris Webb of Unitedmania told me a few weeks ago.

Q: How do you sell out Columbus Crew Stadium?

Hope you had a happy 4th of July!

Wish I coulda been there to enjoy the fireworks.

Instead I have the please-don't-be-gunshots sounds of firecrackers in the streets of Jerusalem.

Yeah, stuff's a little crazy over here, if you hadn't heard... Click to continue reading...

Bradley Soccer Still Healing

From ESPNU: Bradley soccer still healing from fatal fireworks prank

Based on police interviews, court documents and a report from Lyons, this is what happened:

Dahlquist's roommates Bradley soccer players Mentgen, David Crady and Ryan Johnson and a fourth friend, Daniel Cox lit Roman candles and shoved them under Dahlquist's bedroom door on the second floor of the house.

Ogen Outlaws at BYU Cougars: July 4th

1

Last night my family and I went to take in the Ogden Outlaws BYU Cougars game, and watch the fireworks afterward. It was a hard fought game, though the Cougars (who have come to expect to beat the Outlaws) have to be disappointed with their play and the result. With the fireworks show after the game, and then yardwork that needed to be done this morning, I haven't been able to get to my write-up until now.

Happy 4th of July!

1
I'd like to wish everyone here in the States a happy, and most importantly, safe, Independence Day.

Even though Congress voted to declare independence from Great Britain on July 2, 1776, it wasn't until two days later that Thomas Jefferson's wording in the document itself was approved. It also wasn't actually signed by most delegates until August 2, but for some reason, we've chosen to commemorate American independence on the 4th of July. Click to continue reading...

Happy 4th Of July

1

Happy 4th of July, from your humble writer in Queens!

Break out the BBQ!

Make sure the steak is still mooing!

Grab the 32 pack of Bud!

Watch TV, eat and just be as gluttonous and disgusting as you want to be!

Enjoy the fireworks folks. And have a great weekend.

The grass is green

3
A unique feature of the Home Depot Center stadium is that there's grass seating on a little hill at one end of the stadium. Usually, though, they don't open that area up for fans unless everything else is sold out. I always consider that a true sell-out, no matter what the numbers are officially. No one on the grass? I don't know what to really think of the creamsicles coming to town. I do think it's great that ESPN will be broadcasting and of course there should be a good crowd because of the fireworks, but Houston always seems like such an enigma to me. The win the Cup, but yet don't seem to play terribly well through the year. Click to continue reading...

The Most Expensive Grass in Carson & More

2

The Galaxy announced today they are selling tickets for Friday's game against the New England Revolution on the grass berm at the north end of the stadium - for $36 a pop.

Considering the cheapest seats in the stadium are $15 for the game that seems more than a little pricey, especially considering you have to bring your own blanket.

Colorado Rapids - New York Billboards on the Best Day of the Whole Summer

There seems to be some trepidation every time I tell someone I celebrate the Fourth of July at a soccer game. In a sense, I can understand this inclination. Fireworks on the Fourth, if they are to be associated with a sport, seems like they should be over a distinctly American sport, the obvious choice being baseball.

O, Canada!

Tonight, I'll be in the crowd on Parliament Hill with friends, loved ones and complete strangers, watching the fireworks as we celebrate the 141st birthday of the greatest country on earth. Envious? You should be.

As Margaret Wente writes in today's Globe and Mail: "We've won the lottery and, sometimes, we're even smart enough to know it. Click to continue reading...

Switzerland v Portugal Friendly Nonpreview

1

Here's why neutral fans should watch this game:

You shouldn't. Over on the other side we have a potential bombshell of a match which could, due to a series of tiebreakers, go to penalties in the event that it stands even after the end of the first 90. Penalties in the group stages? Now that's an important game and one with potential fireworks (I think the defense of the Czech Republic will stifle Turkey while poaching a goal somewhere along the way putting penalties irrelevant, but that point is neither here nor there - unless you enjoy gambling on other people's predictions).

Arsenal striker involved in training ground bust-up

Put a group of Holland players in a confined space and watch the fireworks go off. While the British stereotype of the Dutch is a laid-back nation full of liberal-minded, peace-loving folk, this doesn't extend to the football players who are a spiky bunch. Ruud Van Nistelrooy has already been bemoaning his sh*t experience at [. Click to continue reading...

How not to celebrate a goal

After Abedi scores this goal for Hapoel Tel Aviv, their supporters decide to light some seats on fire. Here's the goal with a brief look at the pyrolarity that ensues:

And here's a view from a camera phone of the pyrolarity from afar, notice the smoke plumes and the worries look on the people's faces:
