SPL: Motherwell v Hibs

The Scottish Football Blog at related • 0 views
An acquaintance, for whom the glass is forever half empty, insisted to me last Sunday evening that Hibs would be in the bottom three of the SPL after the next three games.

That is mathematically possible. And this particular lover of life had, unlike me, endured the trip to Dingwall to see goalkeeper Ben Williams do a Highland fling in losing three goals and three points to Ross County.

A famous five today, St Johnstone's clash with Rangers having already lost out to the weather. Hamilton have a pitch inspection scheduled for this morning. If New Douglas Park isn't fit to stage the match then the Accies will not have played a match this month.

Hamilton v Aberdeen
If this one goes ahead then it will be the only professional match in Britain kicking off this afternoon.

Wayne Rooney's Dad (48) and Uncle Richie (54) have been detained by Merseyside Police in an ongoing betting probe along with 9 others.

Motherwell midfielder Steven Jennings was also arrested this morning in the same investigation which involved Motherwell's SPL clash with Hearts last December in which Jennings was sent off as Hearts beat Motherwell 2-1 at Fir Park.

26 year old Motherwell midfielder Steve Jennings was arrested today at his home as part of an investigation into betting irregularities in Motherwell's 2-1 loss to Hearts in December 14 of last year.

Jennings who joined from Tranmere in 2009 was sent off with eight minutes left at Fir Park and has been under investigation for some time.

Here's a few players plying their trade in Scottish football who, for one reason or another, are worth keeping an eye out for this season:

Shaun Hutchinson (Motherwell)

The 20 year-old central defender was brought to Fir Park by Jim Gannon but was frozen out during Craig Brown's time in charge.

With the Scottish Premier League 2010-11 season now over, it's time to have a look back at the players who have made their mark during the campaign. When selecting a team of the year it's hard to avoid Celtic and Rangers, but thankfully there are those from outside the big two who have done enough to earn their place.

Motherwell fans who give credence to such things as fate and coincidence will be taking strength ahead of Saturday's Scottish Cup Final.

It was 20 years ago that Tommy McLean's side brought the trophy back to Fir Park after that crackerjack of a game with brother Jim's Dundee United.

The SPL season heads inexorably towards its conclusion. Did last Sunday decide the destination of the title?

Perhaps.

Perhaps not.

All Rangers can do is keep winning, keep hoping and wait for Celtic to slip up. Not much else for it.

Celtic, of course, need to avoid slipping up.

Inverness v St Johnstone: 1-2
Motherwell v Hamilton: 0-0

Has anything changed?

'Well Tip McCall To Do Well

Rumours are rife that Stuart McCall has signed a one year rolling contract to take over as Motherwell manager.

Another left field choice for Motherwell, although John Boyle's judgement in such matters has been reasonably shrewd in recent years. It's not really Boyle's fault that he has to go through the recruitment process so often.

I am not really privy to such information but I believe that Queen's Don't Stop Me Now was a bit of a favourite with Hearts fans as they celebrated winning the Scottish Cup in 2006.

They must be feeling something similar now with Jim Jefferies' side on a five match winning streak. That includes a derby win and a win over Celtic.

Craig Brown The Under-Appreciated Nice Man of Scottish football is a post from: Just Football

It hasn't been the worst of seasons so far for Motherwell. Comfortably in the top half of the Scottish Premier League, they should remain there for the rest of the campaign.

The Lanarkshire side won't make an impression on the title race, with other clubs still unable to make a serious challenge to Celtic and Rangers.

SPL In Europe: Terrible Trio

Time once again for our clubs to roll up their sleeves and embark on yet another march towards European respectability.

Dundee United's forays into Europe have been sporadic of late. The memories of great European nights linger but a defeat to MyPa 47 in 2005 has been the solitary new entry in United's continental history in the past decade.

SPL In Europe: Breidablik v Motherwell

Strange how life works out.

18 months ago Craig Brown would only have popped to Iceland if he'd heard they had a decent reduction on Werther's Originals.

That was then. Now he's masterminding Motherwell's Europa adventure.

With a 1-0 lead from the home game Motherwell have travelled to Iceland with a slim advantage over Briedablik.

SPL In Europe: Eureka! Europa!

Traditionally this would be the post where I offer my expert opinion on Motherwell's Europa League opener against Icelandic side Breidablik.

I would warn against the dangers of the opposition's towering centre forward and give some indication of Motherwell's readiness based on their friendly games.

Motherwell Chris Humphrey's and Breidablik Kristinn Jonsson battle for the ball during the Europa League Second Qualifying Round, first leg match at Fir Park, Motherwell.

Breidablik are deep into their domestic season (they're currently leading the league in Iceland), so you might have expected them to be sharper than Motherwell.

Reformulated from an old African proverb, the saying "It takes a village to raise a child" speaks to the community effort required in providing a young person with the best chance of success. Coincidentally, football supporters in England and Scotland can identify with this sentiment. As television booms have busted with chairmen counting on money that never came, or financial schemes that failed to produce the desired results on the pitch and in the bank, fans from many walks of life have huddled together under their respective banners over the past decade to pick up the shattered pieces to raise clubs up again, the right way.
