FIFA's official ranking system for nations was officially introduced in 1992.
Initially it was a rather simplistic system, in which a win gave a team 3 points whilst a draw gave
the team 1 point. This created a number of problems, based mainly around the fact that it didn't
take into account that some countries continually played weaker nations and as a result would
constantly rank higher than more accomplished sides.

Bit of controversy in European World Cup qualifying, with the powers that be pulling what looks
like a commercially motivated bait and switch with the playoffs.
Here's what's happened: The nine European group winners all qualify automatically. So that's
Denmark, Switzerland, Slovakia, Germany, Spain, England, Serbia, Italy, Netherlands all going to
South Africa.

qualifier on Wednesday playing for a chance to top the CONCACAF qualifying group, and a chance to
improve its place in the FIFA world rankings (as well as score a measure of revenge for the 3-1
thumping delivered by Costa Rica in June).

What happens when Sepp Blatter and his cronies see millions of dollars and plenty of prestige in
danger of disappearing? They change the system.
That's the conclusion drawn by many after FIFA last night announced they were altering their
planned World Cup 2010 qualification play-offs system to seed teams based on their FIFA world
rankings, a decision which clearly favours the traditionally strong nations.

The latest FIFA World Rankings were released on Wednesday September 2, 2009 with not many

While the rankings don't really mean all that much, it's nice to see the USA near the top of the
FIFA World Rankings, isn't it? Victories in our two matches this weekend would help that climb
continue, especially if France or Croatia falter in upcoming UEFA WC Qualifiers. See the full list
at FIFA.com.

LuÃs Fabiano scores against Estonia
Brazil made hard work of a testy match against Estonia in Tallinn. In the end, a late first-half
goal by LuÃs Fabiano was all that separated Brazil from a country 112th in the FIFA world
rankings.
Despite being a meaningless ‘friendly', the confrontation was littered with bad tackles by
both sides.

Spain struggled to get any offensive against an Iraqi side that played very defensively. Unlike
Sunday's match against New Zealand, the score remained 0-0 heading into halftime. It looked like
Iraq might be able to hold the reigning European Champions scoreless but David Villa's goal off a
header in the 55th minute was the gamewinner.
