Silao Malo scored the only goal of the game as Samoa defeated their neighbours American Samoa by
one goal to nil in the final round of first stage FIFA World Cup qualification matches in the
Oceania region.
American Samoa, a team who have become famous for suffering heavy defeats and propping up the
FIFA World Rankings in recent years, had captured the hearts and minds of many football fans with
their exploits this week.
Having been the laughing stock of world football for many years, the tiny Pacific nation of
American Samoa is just one step away from progressing beyond the first stage of 2014 FIFA World Cup
qualifying following a good start to their campaign.
Rock bottom of the FIFA World Rankings over the last few years and having failed to win a single
competitive match for 17 years, American Samoa began their first stage campaign on Tuesday by
defeating Tonga by two goals to one with Ramin Ott and Shalom Luani getting on the score sheet.
The United States is set to face its biggest test of the Klinsmann era with a visit to France on
Friday in an international friendly. This is just the third meeting between the two teams with
France winning the previous two games 6-0 and 3-0 in 1979.

France has already qualified for Euro 2012 so expect France coach
Laurent Blanc to give some younger players much needed experience.

Could Spain's second XI beat England? - originally posted on Soccerlens.com
While watching David Silva and Spain dismantle a dogged and compact Scotland on Wednesday, it
struck me: this was hardly Spain's best outfit and they were dominating.
Silva cemented his bona fides as one of the top half-dozen players in world football and Spain,
with a team featuring second-choice players like Thiago Alcantara, Jordi Alba and Santi Cazorla,
passed Scotland into an uneasy submission.

Preparations for the Euro 2012 Championships can begin as a 2-2 draw against Montenegro

Capello still remains a figure most people can't wait to see the back of.

There are empty seats at Wembley this evening. The FA's hyperbolic per-match ticket advertising
for this match may have made inferences to this being the match that everybody wants to see, but
the fact that the advertisements were on display anywhere at all told its own story. There are red
dots pock-marking the background at the national stadium this evening, betraying the feeling that
this match is more of a tussle than a battle of Britain.
By Clemente Lisi – NEW YORK, NY (Sept 5, 2011) US Soccer Players -- Following a 1-0 loss to Costa
Rica, the United States takes on up-and-coming Belgium on Tuesday in Jurgen Klinsmann's first test
on European soil as US National Team coach. Belgium - 37th in the FIFA World Rankings and 22nd
among European teams - has something to prove in front of a home crowd in Brussels.
It was not a good weekend for Arsenal, so Richard and Ginge decide to pile on and try to figure
out what's going on in North London and if the end of the Wenger era is coming. We also ridicule
the FIFA World Rankings and review the Group Stage draw of the Champions League. Ginge Learns to
Properly Pronounce the Names of English Football Teams continues with League One where Hartlepool
and Wycombe await to trip up our Yankee co-host.
For those of you who missed it, FIFA announced its revised edition of its World Rankings
yesterday and I'm sure that many of you will be as surprised as I was when you see the top ten
looking like this:
- Netherlands
- Spain
- Germany
- England
- Uruguay
- Brazil
- Italy
- Portugal
- Argentina
- Croatia
Before I start my argument, perhaps we should look briefly at how this is worked out:
There are three main categories to decide where points are awarded; firstly, you have to win or
draw, no points will be awarded for a loss.
Now then. You don't need us to tell you that the FIFA World Rankings are a load of old toilet.
Indeed, we were saying the same thing six years ago (this excellent piece by Swisslet explains how
the ranking system works - it is the same today except only four years of results are taken into
account, not eight).

The USA have fired Bob Bradley as their manager.
The New Jersey-born coach was relieved of his duties today after five years at the helm.
Last month's loss to Mexico in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final proved his undoing, as the US had led
2-0 in that game before capitulating embarrassingly 4-2 and the
defeat also meant they missed out on the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.
"HEY! SPAIN IS STILL RANKED #1"The new FIFA World Rankings are out, with Copa America having a big impact on the way teams moved
up and down the table in July. While not playing a match in the last month, the U.S. MNT are ranked
30th, down six places, as teams from South America participating in their confederation
championship jumped up the table.
Ho? Ho-HoThe new FIFA world rankings are out. It's like Christmas morning when is I see FUBAR's,
er, FIFA's list of the top national men's teams in the world. I mean, FIFA is such a credible,
honest organization that when it speaks, I listen.
Much like the NCAA here in the United States, bringing order to the world's top national sides
provides great value for hardcore and casual football fans alike.
South America's top performers at Copa America saw the biggest boosts in the latest FIFA World
Rankings, with champions Uruguay catapulting 13 places to No. 5, while Chile climbed 16 spots to
No. 11.
The U.S. men's national team fell six plays to No. 30 in the world in the latest Rankings.

England drop two places in FIFA world rankings
Fabio Capello's men down to eighth

Every month or so FIFA release a ranking of all the national teams in the world. The rankings
are widely mocked for their inaccurate representation of the relative qualities of international
sides, but is this fair?
Fans and journalists alike mocked England's recent position of fourth in the rankings.
The middle of the summer always brings about the "silly season", that time of year when, with
parliament sunning itself on beaches or relaxing on their country estates, news editors find
themselves having to resort to a different angle in their reporting of the news. This extends to
the sports pages as well, particularly in years with an odd number when there is no distraction in
the form of a World Cup finals or a European Championship finals.
The Mexican national team received a major boost in the latest FIFA World Rankings, moving up 11
spots to No. 9 in the world on the strength of its Gold Cup triumph last week.
The United States slipped two places to 24th, behind the likes of Montenegro and Turkey, which
both moved passed the Americans in the most recent rankings, released today.
Fifa's World Rankings for June were published today. 2010 World Cup winners Spain remain in top

Fifa's World Rankings for May were published today and there is little change throughout the 200+
team ranking. 2010 World Cup winners Spain remain in top spot followed by The Netherlands, Brazil,
Germany and England in 6th place. Ghana are the top African team in 15th.
The USA are in 22nd place.

CONCACAF has submitted its proposal for 2014 World Cup qualifying to FIFA, and under the
proposed set-up, the United States and the five other highest-ranked teams in the region according
to the March FIFA world rankings will begin qualifying in the semifinal round in June, 2012.
FIFA announced the draw for the extra-preliminary round of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers for the
CONCACAF region this afternoon. As expected, they are using the FIFA World Rankings to determine
the bottom ten national teams in the region with the cutoff being the March 2011 rankings. Those
rankings will freeze in place the composition of the teams that enter the first three phases of the
qualifying competition.
Fifa's World Rankings for April were published yesterday. 2010 World Cup winners Spain remain in
top spot followed by The Netherlands, Brazil, Germany and England in 6th place. Ghana are the top
African team in 15th.
The USA drop again to 22nd. Japan, winners of the Asian Cup, are up to 13th.

The recent draw with Argentina and loss to Paraguay did not help the United States in the latest
FIFA world rankings, as the results have dropped the national team from 19 down to 22.
Mexico, after its victory over Paraguay and draw with Venezuela, is up a spot to 26, closing the
gap between the top two CONCACAF nations as the Gold Cup approaches.
CONMEBOL have asked the JFA to think again after Japan withdrew from this summer's
Copa America.
JFA President Junji Ogura told former FIFA Executive
Committee colleagues Julio Grondona & Nicolas Leoz in
Buenos Aires this week that Japan had no plans to travel to
Argentina following the turmoil caused to the J-League after March's devastating earthquake and
tsunami.
Jay DeMerit (Green Bay/Bay Port) hasn't played in a competitive match in more
than eight months, but coach Bob Bradley called the central defender back into a
U.S. national team camp.
DeMerit, who could make his Major League Soccer debut Saturday in the Vancouver Whitecaps'
inaugural match, was one of 24 players selected by Bradley to train ahead of friendlies against
Argentina and Paraguay later this month.
Fifa's World Rankings for March were published today. World Cup winners Spain remain in top spot
followed by The Netherlands, Germany and Argentina. Brazil drop to 5th.
England are in 6th place. Ghana are the top African team.
The USA drop to 19th. Japan, winners of the Asian Cup, are up to 15th.
After a long wait we'll at last see the Smuda top boys in action once again. The challenge may
be harder that it seems as Norway is currently ranked 11th in the Fifa World rankings. It must be
because of great teamwork because, just as us, they don't have world superstars on their team.
Still, players like John Carew, John Arne Riise or Morten Gamst Pedersen should be well known to
all people seriously interested in football.
The African Nations Championship (or CHAN) is unique amongst international football tournaments
in that nations are restricted to selecting only domestic players in their squads. The 2011 edition
of this tournament begins this week in Sudan with the hosts taking on Gabon in Khartoum.
As the competition only allows the selection of domestically based players the standards of each
respective international side is a little different to "full internationals".
BERNE, Switzerland Japan moved into the top 20 of the FIFA world rankings on Wednesday after
winning the Asian Cup last month while world champions Spain stayed in first place. Japan's record
fourth Asian title which they won in Qatar lifted them 12 places to 17th, making them the Asian
confederation's highest-ranked side.
Fifa's World Rankings for February are out. World Cup winners Spain remain in top spot followed by
The Netherlands, Germany and Brazil.
