This is it! The final World Cup qualifier! Are you excited?
Yeah, neither is anybody else. Let's still hope for a good showing.
As Jeff discussed, Serbia's win over Romania means France has no chance to go top of the group.
France's win over Faroe Islands means that France is guaranteed the second-place playoffs.

It's a little girly fight, but should the head coach for a soccer power like France not get into
these peddling scuffles with a dude from the Faroe Islands.

This is tricky because there are so many fixtures you'd think would be boring to watch until you
consider one or two auxiliary factors.
Let's take for example Liechtenstein v. Azerbaijan. Who's gonna watch this hopeless run around?
Well, let's say someone told you this was the only game you would ever be allowed to watch again
for the rest of your life.

By the end of the weekend, we'll probably have a much better idea of who will joining the
countries who have already qualified for South Africa, who will be in the play offs and which (if
any) of the major footballing powers will be watching England on TV. Here's a quick guide to the
various scenarios that will be played out around the world today:
EUROPE

On a weekend of International football, I am glad that around nine months ago Robin had his oats
and will be at home with his wife while she hopefully gives birth to another little Gooner. At
least we know one player shouldn't be injured for the up and coming game against Birmingham.
Only seven more days to get through now!

Europe's top teams are at war on the pitch this weekend in the penultimate round of qualifiers
for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, with three top-of-the-table showdowns as well as with
another three potentially decisive encounters.
All together, thirteen teams will represent Europe in South Africa next year, but so far, only the
Netherlands, Spain, and England have sealed their places for the World Cup finals.

Quick look at the most meaningful World Cup qualifiers Saturday. Home teams first, all times

ASIA/OCEANIABahrain-New Zealand (11:30 a.m., FSC). First leg of a playoff to send a team to the World Cup that

With World Cup qualifiers about to take place, there isn't too much happening at club level. But
there are a few articles and updates that caught my eye.
The biggest news is the medical update on Bafetimbi Gomis. Two days ago at
Guingamp, Gomis collapsed during practice with the France squad.

It is a do-or-die weekend for some of the world's best players, and you will be able to watch
most of it on TV.
Okay, so maybe you won't be able to watch most of it on TV, but with some help from your local
soccer bar, as well as those reliable internet feeds, you should be able to see the likes of
Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Thierry Henry as they try to keep their World Cup dreams
alive.

The ever troubled French national team will be facing the Faroe Islands @ Guingamp, the 2009 winner
of the Coupe de France and "birthplace" of the current Chelsea partnership of Didier Drogba and
Florent Malouda. The match should be a formality but even with a win against Austria at Stade de
France on Wednesday , it will take a miracle to see France finish first of group 7 and qualify
directly for the World Cup.

Well, the international matches are almost upon us. The official site has a full round-up of all
Gunners who will be participating in internationals this weekend here. No fewer than 20 Arsenal
players are listed on international rosters for tomorrow's matches.
There's no point in covering every match, but some of the highlights:
Clichy, Diaby, Gallas, and Sagna look to get France into at least a playoff match for the World
Cup in what should be a romp against Faroe Islands and a mid-week home match against Austria.

Welcome back, football fans. For the moment, I'm temporarily suspending my feud with ESPN. (I
call it a feud even though I believe that in order for it to actually be a feud, ESPN would have to
start arguing with me or, at least, recognize that I exist.) It does appear that ESPN has posted
it's schedule for the weekend with days to spare for a change, for what it's worth given the few
games being broadcast, so those matches are included below.

The European qualifying phase for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa comes to a close over
the next week with six group winners and the identities of several play-off contenders still to be
decided.
Spain and England will approach their final two fixtures safe in the knowledge that their place
in next summer's finals is secure, as is the Netherlands' after they completed their campaign last
month, several of the continent's leading nations still have work to do.

Things aren't going so hot for the French national team right now. They're only sitting second
in their World Cup Qualifying group, coming off a pair of 1-1 draws, everyone hates their manager,
and now, ahead of a cupcake match against Faroe Islands (a side they only beat 1-0 last time),
their players are losing consciousness during training.

Hope for the best and prepare for the worst, I always say.
And thank goodness for Group 9, because the worst, if France can earn a point at home against
the Faroe Islands, will be advancing to the playoffs.
Serbia's last two matches are against Romania and Lithuania, and there's certainly a possibility
that they'll blow their chance of winning the group.

Europeam heavyweights and 1998 World Cup champions France have a battle on their hands if they
want to qualify for the tournament in South Africa next summer. They drew with Group Seven
leaders Serbia on Wednesday night leaving them four points off the Serbians with just two games
left. It now seems almost certain they will have to face a play-off tie to qualify for the
tournament but Barcelona striker thierry Henry is confident his national side have what it takes to
get them to South Africa in 2010.

In Europe, England qualified for the World Cup in South Africa in style from Group 6 with a 5-1
thrashing of Croatia at Wembley. Two goals a piece from Gerrard and Lampard and one from Rooney
meant that England qualified with a 100% record so far in their group.
Elsewhere in the the European qualifying zone Northern Ireland's hopes of making the tournament
took a blow with a 2-0 loss at home to Slovakia.

The decision of the French national team officials to appoint Raymond Domenech
as Jacques Santini's successor will prove to be one of the worst in history. The colourful coach
has done wonders with one of the best European sides, transforming them into the team that
struggles against Faroe Islands.

France's lineup was something like this:
Gignac
Henry Gourcuff Anelka
Toulalan Diarra
Evra Escude Gallas Sagna
Lloris
With Henry and Anelka, it was a bit like a 4-2-1-3, but it was essentially the France formation
(4-2-3-1).
And although it looks to me like Domenech is picking just about the right players, the team play
is lacking fluidity.
