Today's the day football gets rediscovered in Singapore with the Daftly Named LionsX11 hosting
Kelantan at the Jalan Besar Stadium and all 7,500 tickets sold out.
One round of SLeague games, six games, would never have accumulated that many fans yet they come
crawling out the woodwork for this game.
It was only from my Facebook feed that I came to know today's significance.
Twelve years ago today, Singapore football mourned the loss of one of its best players - Borhan Abu
Samah aka "Russian Tank".
Known for his tough and uncompromising tackles during his days, the former Lion, who once ply his
professional trade with the great Pahang side in the Malaysian League that featured the likes of
Fandi Ahmad, V Sundramoorthy, Dollah Salleh and Zainal Abidin Hassan, succumbed to liver cancer
that ended his life at the age of 34.
Persib Bandung's search for a new continues. Last season saw them work their way through three
different coaches yet none were able to make any real impression on a team filled with stars yet
seemingly unable to turn potential into results on the field.
Daniel Roekito, who ended last season with Persib, has taken over the reigns at Persisam Samarinda
and till now Persib have hit a brick wall in their efforts to replace him.
In Singapore Fandi Ahmad is a legend. While it appears these days he is more focused on his
childrens's education, his scouting activities and his own academy there is one Indonesian team
that reckon he could do a job for them.
Cendrawasih Papua are 19th in the 19 team Liga Primer Indonesia which is currently on an indefinite
mid season break.
(This is part one of the three-parter series that featured a story of Singaporean footballer who
overcome the odds in bid improve his game in a foreign land.)
A lot of people would think that to be able to play professional football overseas, one would have
to be a national player in order to "qualify for that feat".
"Here's the 'Crazy Horse'!!" said former Singapore captain Fandi Ahmad prior to the kick-off of the
veteran match of the 2009 Sultan of Selangor Cup at the Jalan Besar Stadium, as stood beside him
(pictured below) was none other than Nasir Jalil (pictured below left in dark-coloured attire)
popularly known by that nickname.

The much anticipated official music video of the 23rd Canon Lion City Cup was officially
launched.
In a joint collaboration between Canon and Soul Theory Studios with local renowned hip hop artiste
Sheikh Haikel, this one minute clip also featured local football luminaries such as Fandi Ahmad,
Malek Awab, Aide Iskandar, S Subramani and Lionel Lewis.
Former Singapore international and Pelita jaya coach Fandi Ahmad was calling for more young players
to go play overseas, and he wasn't meaning just Indonesia.
For sure Singapore could do with improving its reputation overseas. Forget the likes of Noh Alam
Shah and Shahril Ishak, for now it seems their greatest football exports are match fixers!
Last week everyone in Singapore was queuing to have their picture taken with Pele and Eric Cantona.
Legends, they were calling them.
Singapore of course has its very own home grown legend. Fandi Ahmad is his name and even football
haters on the island recognise he was a very special talent back in the day.

The tournament that churned out the names like Fandi Ahmad, V Sundramoorthy and Indra Sahdan Daud,
who went on to represent Singapore national team since its inaugural back in the late 1970s, will
make its return this coming June.
Mitra Kukar come from the east of Kalimantan or the island formerly known as Borneo. They have
enjoyed a flying start to the season with six wins from their opening seven games. Their only
reverse came in a mad 20 minutes away to fellow Group 2 challengers when they shipped four
goals.
And they have been the only goals conceded all season.
