An ocean of luck, that's what Lyon have been bathing in for the last month or so. Even last saturday, OL have won their last home game of the year, for the first time in ten years: another sign of the success of Lyonnais in December. A miracle in the Champions League, followed by other very favorable news (Nicosia, for C1, the neighbor La Duchère for La Coupe de France, a string of referee decisions that got us to win) four straight wins in the Championship .

FC Sion is a small club from a small Swiss town, one which only harbors under 30,000 inhabitants. And yet, they seem to be single-handedly taking on and defeating UEFA in perhaps the fall's most intriguin football sideshow outside of Who Wants A Beckham? (PSG is, yes, the perfect fit.)

After being booted from Europe by UEFA for fielding ineligible playesr, they've gone to court to take them on, and in the process, beat them.

The game is underway, the action has reached a point of let's be honest, boredom. Plus ça change. As ever, it impossible to even attempt to frame the start of the new season in the Blue Square Premier without talking, in more detail than even we might particularly want to, about the financial condition football's de facto fifth division. This summer saw the expulsion and subsequent folding of Rushden & Diamonds, which was followed by the bizarre and in some respects unedifying sight of Imraan Ladak hastily moving their former rivals Kettering Town into their ground, a chaotic couple of months at Wrexham which led to a desperate race against time in order to keep the club alive, and the lingering suspicion that there are a number of clubs playing at this level that are still struggling to come to terms with the new, tougher financial regulations that have been introduced in this league by the Football Conference.

Make no mistake about it: AC Milan put in the kind of performance that usually wins Scudetti. In the Derby Della Madonnina against Inter Milan, the top side in the league notched three goals to extend their lead to five points over Leonardo's side.
