For those who might not be aware, I moved from Chicago to St. Louis, Missouri this past November
to start a new job. Overall, I don't have a lot of complaints. There are a few things Chicago have
that St. Louis doesn't: good pizza, a legitimate subway station, and oh yeah, an MLS franchise.
Ask and ye shall receive, or so the popular saying goes. Apparently demand is high enough for
Portland Timbers tickets this season that the Timbers FO is going to open up some of those tarped
seats in the north end to allow for a couple thousand more fans to squeeze into our already crowded
stadium.
Cascadia Cup! Epic Rivalry! "Derby" Game (not really)! Sensationalistic media extravagance
wordplay! Have we got that all out of the way now? Figured I'd get you guys attuned to the usual
jargon we're used to hearing around the media whenever a Cascadia game looms. While tonight's game
won't be as intense as a Portland Timbers - Seattle Sounders match, the Whitecaps are equally apart
of our little slice of Northwestern heaven.
Union and Football are the two codes trying/needing to increase their foothold in Australia.
Both have seen their domestic games take a fall in recent years - first Union with the short-lived
ARC and then football with the demise of a number of A-League clubs.
Union fell first - but may have picked itself up quickest - not least with the support of the
international S15.
Exactly one year ago today, on June 27, 2010, Philadelphia Union CEO and Operating Partner Nick
Sakiewicz stood in front of a contingent of fans and press, holding a large light switch. It was
mid-afternoon, and the thermometer read above 90°F. After making some prepared remarks, Sakiewicz
flipped the switch, both signaling the machines behind him to launch confetti into the air, and
marking a momentous occasion for the city of Chester and soccer in the Delaware Valley.
This is the 1st guest post by TSG community member Jacob Chambliss. Well
done.
As promising as the latest MLS expansion teams seem, their inception does little to dull my own
apathy regarding the league's newest franchises (Disclaimer: I do love Jay DeMerit).
