Champions League Division Two gets under way It is an exciting week in football. We have already
seen all the fun of the Champions League, a tournament which despite all the thrills and spills it
often produces, sometimes makes two exciting teams play out dull games, as Inter and Barca
displayed last night.

Sometimes, you have to wonder. Levels of fitness and skill have no doubt improved in football
over the last couple of decades, but perhaps today was the day during which we started to lose grip
with reality. Every British newspaper had a pull-out section, many choosing to lavish extravagant
praise on a match that hadn't even been played yet.

If you open this morning's newspapers, you'll see that, in the opinion of the hacks, it's
already a foregone conclusion that this year's European Cup final will be the greatest football
match of all time. This may or may not come to pass, but it has some stiff opposition to overcome
if it is to join as much as the greatest European Cup finals of all time.

How often, then, do cup winners get lucky? Ahead of tomorrow night's European Cup final in Rome
it's a question worth asking ourselves, because there is a tendency, in cup finals, for those
moments of good fortune to be critically important. In this respect, cup competitions are very
different to league seasons.

Turning to the Guardian's sports blog this morning, it is disheartening to see that 39.4% of
people replying to a poll asking the question of "Are Chelsea the victims of a UEFA conspiracy?".
Leaving aside the fact that sending off a Barcelona player and leaving it until the ninetieth
minute before Barcelona have their first shot on goal of the match (which would, more likely,
require the compliance of the Chelsea defence rather than UEFA officials or the referee of that
particular match) and that, let's be honest, if UEFA wished to conspire against Chelsea, they could
have found a far more watertight way of doing it than the one that they used, here's an alternative
"conspiracy theory" over what was going on at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

UEFA, according to conspiracy theorists, have "got the final they wanted". Chelsea were knocked
out of the Champions League by Barcelona last night, and the opening line of this post is already
being widely repeated as the truth. One would have to have a heart of stone to not feel some degree
of sympathy for Chelsea - they had approximately two and a half strong calls for a penalty waved
away and Barcelona's goal was their only shot on target of the entire match.

...Plus the European Cup semi-final second legs. That's an easy one to get out the way quickly:

Messi had a quiet game for Barcelona but set up a last-gasp equaliser for Andrés Iniesta to put
Barcelona through on away goals [.

evening. It's the second leg of the semi-final of the European Cup and it's Manchester United with

Arsenal: Almunia, Sagna, Toure, Djourou, Gibbs, Walcott, Fabregas, Song
