The old and the new keep Juve in contention

SoccerLens 09 November @ 02:27 AM EST

It all started on September 19th in the year 2000. David Trezeguet, a high profile 40 billion lira signing from the then French champions AS Monaco, scored his first goal for Juventus an 83rd minute winner against Panathinaikos in the Champions League.

Nine years later, the 32-year-old Frenchman, who spent his formative years in Argentina watching his father finish his own playing career, celebrated his 167th goal for the Bianconeri, making him the most prolific foreign goalscorer in the club's history.

Class is Permanent: Stojkovic'ten Yılın Golü!

Jesus Almeyda 22 October @ 12:53 PM EST
Where Do We Go From Here?

Euro 2008 on World Cup Blog 16 October @ 08:12 AM EST

It's official. The day before yesterday we officially missed out on World Cup 2010, making it the first big (biggest might be more appropriate) stage absence in our short but memorable footballing résumé (not counting Euro 2000 here). And as questions of why and how start knocking on (allegedly) responsible doors, I've decided to focus on some things that might give a more clear answer on what now and where do we go from here.

Malta e o Bessa

Click to continue reading...

Portugal/Hungria - 1999

Click to continue reading...

Rooney: I’m Glad I Didn’t Get England Stick Like Other United Players

Republik Of Mancunia 09 October @ 03:00 AM EST

Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher all missed their penalties in the last World Cup quarter finals against Portugal. Owen Hargreaves was the only man to find the back of the net.

The game had finished 0-0 after extra time, with Wayne Rooney getting sent off for an incident involving Ricardo Carvalho.

Filippo Inzaghi - a tribute to the man ‘born offside’

SoccerLens 17 September @ 07:00 AM EST

Tuesday night we witnessed the everlasting phenomenom that is Filippo Inzaghi. Score a few goals. Check! Remind everyone he's still around. Check! We've been here before haven't we?

Being a rarely casual follower of Serie A these days, it's a bit of a shock when Inzaghi pops up to decide games.

Being in Liège: the pitch side view

Untold Arsenal 17 September @ 06:55 AM EST
Being in Liège yesterday it was a great result for us. By Walter Broeckx The trip from the Benelux gooners took us the "hot city". Budapeste

Quick Slovenia preview

11 Lions - England Footy 05 September @ 06:44 AM EST

Slovenia are no mugs internationally speaking: since independence from the old Yugoslavia in 1991, they reached both Euro 2000 and the 2002 World Cup and they are currently ranked 57th in the world and 31st in Europe (which puts them ahead of Wales!) and they lie third in World Cup qualifying group three, two points behind Northern Ireland with three games left to play.

Beto, outro que regressa a casa

Gramsci's Kingdom 10 July @ 08:58 AM EST
So, I just finished Jonathan Wilson's rather good new book Inverting the Pyramid: The History of Football Tactics. I recommend a read to all real devotees of the sport (by some miracle, it has been released in North America at the same time as in the UK), though some of the press praise for the book is a little over the top in my opinion. EURO 2008 - Goodnight Vienna

Soccerphile World Cup Blog 04 July @ 06:54 PM EST
With the final game of EURO 2008 now over, it is time to breathe in the Alpine air and take stock.
Overall, it has been one of the better tournaments of recent years. The football has for the most part been attacking and open, an improvement on Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup and broadly as exciting as Euro 2000, although the final's denouement will colour the final analysis. Another new football - Nike will succeed where Adidas failed.

Soccerblog 01 July @ 07:28 AM EST

The fabled new Europass ball was perhaps much ado about nothing.77 goals were scored in the tournament. This was exactly the same as the number of goals scored in Euro 2004 The all time record of 85 goals was scored in the euro 2000 championships. So Adidas' tall claims that the ball was the most incredible piece of technical wizardry since Harry Potter's broom were exactly that - tall claims.

Spain crowned European champions

Soccer By Ives 29 June @ 08:17 PM EST

On the strength of a stingy defense, quick and skillful midfield and a wonderful finish from Fernando Torres, Spain is the new European Champion.

It was definitely refreshing to watch a team win a tournament by playing beautiful attacking soccer and not by turning the game into a defensive-oriented bore-fest.

Sideline Views 29 June @ 05:09 PM EST
Long thought of as underachievers, Spain put the finishing touches on a tremendous showing at Euro 2008. Spain demolished the opposition in the first round and finally put their past to rest against Italy as Spain ousted the Italians via penalties. From there, a 3-0 semifinal win over Russia and Sunday's 1-0 win over Germany were somehwat anticlimactic. Click to continue reading...
