“The Way” Has Got Me Thinking About How Nice English Soccer Is…

English Premier league 13 September @ 09:53 AM EST

Alright, over here in the States we don't get as much Soccer coverage as we should. I admit that.

I get ESPN The Magazine and there was an interesting piece in there about the "Everton Way" and how it is used all over the place to train young players because... Everton has to be better at training.

ESPN paid for Davey Becks infomercial

Dirty Tackle 08 July @ 08:31 PM EST

Sports Illustrated senior writer Grant Wahl's soon to be released book, "The Beckham Experiment", reveals that ESPN paid 19 Entertainment, Mr. Davey Becks' management company, to produce the hour-long documentary which was broadcast before his first match with the LA Galaxy back in 2007.

In what Wahl describes as an "example of checkbook journalism", the program entitled "David Beckham: New Beginnings" (part one above, the rest is on YouTube) was positioned as an insidery look at the lead up to Davey's move to Los Angeles something ESPN The Magazine failed to get when 19 Entertainment denied them interview access to Beckham.

The story of Eric Frimpong

Soccer By Ives 03 July @ 12:35 PM EST

If you have never heard the name Eric Frimpong (pictured in blue), then chances are you aren't familiar with his story. It is a sad story of a soccer player who seemingly had the world at his feet before a series of events changed his life forever.

ESPN the Magazine's Sam Alipour has written about Frimpong's story, and it is a must-read.

714, 60: Soccer needs its own American story

Pitch Invasion 12 June @ 12:01 PM EST

In a follow-up piece to our discussion on whether soccer to have more statistics to thrive in the States, Josh Crockett looks at the history of American sports culture and concludes it's the stories behind the numbers that matter.

[America has] had, after all, a century of the most extraordinary and compelling sporting stories to savor and reflect upon.

Numbers or Lore? Soccer and Statistics in the U.S.

Pitch Invasion 09 June @ 10:04 AM EST

I was recently asked by ESPN the Magazine writer Chris Sprow whether I paid much attention to statistics in football. My answer was pretty abrupt, and didn't exactly highlight me as a scholar of the statistical side of the game. "I honestly hardly ever look at stats," I told him, and he quoted me with that in this look at statistics and the appeal of soccer in the States.

A Viewer's Guide to the UEFA Champions League Final

100 Percent Soccer 26 May @ 10:51 PM EST

A quick quiz related to the Barcelona-Manchester United final on live at 11:25 a.m. Wednesday on ESPN.

You know this game is big when:

A. ESPN actually recognizes soccer exists and puts Barcelona's Lionel Messi on the cover of ESPN: The Magazine.

B. ESPN shows the final on well, ESPN, compared to ESPN2 or ESPN Classic, which is where it usually shows UEFA ECL contests.

Lionel Messi in ESPN the Magazine

Pro Soccer Weekly 26 May @ 09:18 PM EST
Finally, a major sports magazine has a true soccer star on its cover and as its feature story! And I don't count Kobe Bryant wearing a Barcelona jersey on the cover of ESPN the Magazine. It is great to finally see this publication put Barca star Lionel Messi on its cover and do a feature story on him, which you can read by clicking this link! Click to continue reading...

ESPN Unveils Champions League Final Plans

EPL Talk 21 May @ 05:41 PM EST

This Wednesday's Champions League Final will be a mix of emotions both on and off the pitch. Reason being is that it'll be ESPN's last coverage of the Champions League before they hand the "keys" over to Fox Soccer Channel and Setanta Sports for next season. After broadcasting the Champions League for 15 years, I for one will definitely miss ESPN's coverage.

Simmons vs Gladwell - the Ali-Frazier of writers

MIKE JACOBS 14 May @ 09:33 AM EST
I don't think there are two writers who I am more engrossed in than author Malcolm Gladwell and ESPN's Bill Simmons.
Gladwell continues to churn out books that promote thought - "The Tipping Point", "Blink" and "Outliers"; Simmons column in ESPN the magazine - 'The Sports Guy' - is first-class reading. Click to continue reading...

The Bea Arthur Select XI

Bea Arthur may have died last week, but her spirit lives on at ESPN the Magazine. Inspired by Ryan Giggs' surprising receipt of the FA Player of the Year Award they've drawn up the Bea Arthur Select XI; surprisingly there are a couple of MLS name in the mix next to geriatric geniuses like Maldini and Inzaghi. Kobe Bryant loves Barcelona! from ESPN the Magazine

Pro Soccer Weekly 30 January @ 12:06 AM EST
Can anyone imagine that a major American sports star like Kobe Bryant would wear a Barcelona jersey on the cover of a mainstream sports magazine like ESPN the Magazine 5 years ago? 10 years ago?
Does this mean that soccer has finally arrived in the United States as a major sport? Obviously the answer to that question is no. Click to continue reading...
