Season reference: Europe, CONCACAF

0

It's regular-season time in Europe and tournament time in Europe and the Americas. Here's a quick guide to following everything and catching some of it on TV. I've included Wikipedia links because they're a good -- if unverified -- medium for answering questions like, "Cyprus? There's a team from Cyprus in the Champions League?

Round 2 Legit to Quit

0
No lengthy preamble today, aside from it's fun to watch the England national team continue to struggle. Good times. Also, gotta love ESPN2 scheduling the Galaxy/Fire match Thursday night, barely 24 hours after said England friendly, hence a certain Beckham fellow (and Landon Donovan) couldn't play. Maybe television will finally get MLS to honor FIFA dates. Click to continue reading...

Thursday Galaxy Gameday

2

The one thing players stress about new Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena is his man management skills:

"His best quality is as a man manager and as a team manager," said defender Chris Klein, who has had stints under Arena with the national team. "He's always gotten the most out of players and if you ask guys who played for him many more times than I have, they'll say the same thing - when you play under Bruce, he's going to get the most out of you.

Pablo and the USA vs. Guatemala

0

Hey, long time, no post. Sorry about that. I promise both of my loyal readers that I will mention something about our club's much needed win over KC.

In the meantime, switch on ESPN2 tonight, because Pablo is going to be down south helping the US qualify for the World Cup tonight. Gotta love him and Bradley in the central defense and Donovan up front playing for a team who doesn't hate one another right now.

Reyna Appearing In Pre-Game Spot

2
Nothing like moving from the field to the booth. Now this looks like a guest-gig for Claudio Reyna but hopefully it works out for him and we won't have to listen to people like Allen Hopkins or people like that. Also, we get Adrian Healey and Shep Messing tomorrow night on ESPN2...yippie. Claudio Reyna, former U. Click to continue reading...

Guatemala v. USA: Play time is over

27
We're not playing Barbados anymore, I don't think Guatemala has to put up ads looking for players on their federation website.

The semifinal round of CONCACAF qualifying begins tonight, with the US playing probably its most difficult game of the round first. Guatemala should advance with the US into the Hex, and this game will be a chance to gauge where both teams stand. Click to continue reading...

The big game

2

USA-Guatemala. Not in Beijing. In Guatemala. World Cup qualifying, first game of the semifinal round-robin.

You can watch on ESPN2 at 10 p.m. ET. I hope to be watching from a sports pub in Beijing. I say "hope" because the MPC help desk woman didn't seem too confident as she wrote down Chinese characters to hand to a cab driver.

More than Semi-Excited

The long march begins again for the US MNT, which kicks off the semifinal round of World Cup Qualifying with a match at Estadio Mateo Flores in Guatemala City tonight at 10p ET (ESPN2) against the host country's chapines.

The Yanks are 10-4-5 all-time vs. Guatemala in a series that began in 1977 with four straight losses to the Central American nation. Click to continue reading...

Next Galaxy Coach: Bruce Arena

1
It looks as if last night's 2-2 draw with Chivas USA will be the only game that Cobi Jones gets to be the head coach of the Los Angeles Galaxy. It has been confirmed by several sources that former U.S. Men's National Team coach Bruce Arena will take over the reins of the club, and should be on the sidelines for the Galaxy's next game, this coming Thursday against the Chicago Fire. Crazy night

2
It was a crazy night at Home Depot Center. Between an early goal, a rally, en elbow and subsequent broken jaw and a stoppage-time equalizer, the game had a little of everything.

Of course, the on-the-field action wasn't the only thing that made the night a crazy one.

First, celebrity chef Ingrid Hoffmann was there. Click to continue reading...

Leiweke speaks

You'll probably see a lot of this circulating around today so I decided to post up the raw audio of it.

Here's audio of Tim Leiweke speaking to the media moments after he spoke to ESPN2 about all things Bruce Arena.

Leiweke doesn't often make halftime appearances for us hacks. Click to continue reading...

Galaxy vs. Chivas (and BRUCE ARENA?!?!?)

The game is here, and the ESPN2 guys have just reiterated one of the top rumors of the past few days. Apparently Bruce Arena is in the HDC, having dinner with the AEG boys.

Cobi Jones seeks to get Galaxy back on track

5

Before there was David Beckham in the US, there was Cobi Jones, the real deal. He was a lethal combination of talent, charisma, and oomph.

And before MLS decided to anoint Beckham as the saviour of the sport in this country, Jones was already doing more to bring soccer to everyone.

Barcelona are wrapping up their tour of Chicago and New York tonight against the New York Red Bulls. Kick off is at 7:00PM and for those of us who don't splurge on deep cable coverage, the match will be broadcast live on ESPN2!

It should be a lot of fun, and in spite of Lionel Messi's absence from the team, we'll get to see some of Barcelona's finest, including future Red Bull Thierry Henry (ok ok, I'm just kidding, sort of). Click to continue reading...

FC Barcelona Spank CD Guadalajara 5-2

4
Samuel Eto'o scored two, Xavi, Hleb, and Caceres put in one each to give Barcelona the 5-2 victory over CD Guadalajara in front of 40,717 at Soldier Field Sunday.

CD Guadlajara battled valiantly as Jesus scored for Chivas in the 59th minute...Jesus Padilla that is...as well as an 88th minute header from Javier Hernandez, but by then it was much too little much too late as Barca had stamped their authority. Click to continue reading...
